Neither giving nor self-discipline will survive on this wide earth if the sky withholds its rain.

தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியனுலகம்
வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்

Weighing every good thing, the moral codes all reach the same verdict: nothing stands higher than the greatness of those who have renounced and held firm to their discipline.

ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து
வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு

Try to measure the greatness of those who have renounced, and you set yourself an impossible sum — like counting everyone who has ever lived and died.

துறந்தார் பெருமை துணைக்கூறின் வையத்து
இறந்தாரை எண்ணிக்கொண் டற்று

One who guards all five senses with the goad of firm understanding is a seed for the supreme field of liberation.

உரன்என்னும் தோட்டியான் ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான்
வரன்என்னும் வைப்பிற்கோர் வித்து

Indra, king of the gods, is himself sufficient witness to the power of one who has quelled the five sensory desires.

ஐந்தவித்தான் ஆற்றல் அகல்விசும்பு ளார்கோமான்
இந்திரனே சாலுங் கரி

Those who undertake the difficult disciplines are great; those who do not undertake them are small.

செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர்
செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார்

The greatness of sages whose word never fails is proclaimed to the world by the very mantras they have spoken.

நிறைமொழி மாந்தர் பெருமை நிலத்து
மறைமொழி காட்டி விடும்

The anger of those who stand atop the hill of virtue cannot be withstood even for a moment, brief as it is.

குணமென்னும் குன்றேறி நின்றார் வெகுளி
கணமேயுங் காத்த லரிது

Those rightly called Anthanar are people of virtue, for they live bearing gracious compassion toward every living being.

அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்குஞ்
செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்

The household that keeps others on their disciplined paths while never slipping from virtue itself has greater endurance than the life of those who do penance.

ஆற்றின் ஒழுக்கி அறனிழுக்கா இல்வாழ்க்கை
நோற்பாரின் நோன்மை உடைத்து

We call those who fast and endure hunger great. Greater still are those who endure other people's cruel words.

உண்ணாது நோற்பார் பெரியர் பிறர்சொல்லும்
இன்னாச்சொல் நோற்பாரின் பின்

Enduring one's own hunger may show strength, but greater strength belongs to the person who relieves another's hunger.

ஆற்றுவா ராற்றல் பசியாற்ற லப்பசியை
மாற்றுவா ராற்றலிற் பின்

Better than pouring offerings into fire and performing a thousand sacrifices is refusing to eat flesh obtained by taking even one creature's life.

அவிசொரிந் தாயிரம் வேட்டலி னொன்ற
னுயிர்செகுத் துண்ணாமை நன்று

Bearing the hardship that comes through one's own discipline, while causing no distress to other life—these together form austerity.

உற்றநோய் நோன்ற லுயிர்க்குறுகண் செய்யாமை
யற்றே தவத்திற் குரு

Austerity itself succeeds only for those already formed by austerity; for those without that preparation, taking it up is futile.

தவமுந் தவமுடையார்க் காகு மவமதனை
யஃதிலார் மேற்கொள் வது

Have householders perhaps forgotten their own austerity because they are intent on supplying renunciants with what sustains them?

துறந்தார்க்குத் துப்புரவு வேண்டி மறந்தார்கொன்
மற்றை யவர்க டவம்

The verse attributes to the power of austerity, if the practitioner so intends, the destruction of adversaries and the elevation of those who delight in it.

ஒன்னார்த் தெறலு முவந்தாரை யாக்கலு
மெண்ணிற் றவத்தான் வரும்

Because austerity is believed to yield each desired result in the desired way, wise people undertake it here in this life.

வேண்டிய வேண்டியாங் கெய்தலாற் செய்தவ
மீண்டு முயலப் படும்

Those who practise austerity perform the work proper to them; the others, caught in desire, act vainly and to their own harm.

தவஞ்செய்வார் தங்கருமஞ் செய்வார்மற் றல்லா
ரவஞ்செய்வா ராசையுட் பட்டு

As gold shines brighter with repeated heating, those capable of austerity are said to shine more as its hardship presses them.

சுடச்சுடரும் பொன்போ லொளிவிடுந் துன்பஞ்
சுடச்சுட நோற்கிற் பவர்க்கு

All other enduring beings will revere the person who has gained true mastery of their own life-self.

தன்னுயிர் தானறப் பெற்றானை யேனைய
மன்னுயி ரெல்லாந் தொழும்

Those who attain the full power arising from austerity are said to succeed even in passing beyond Death.

கூற்றங் குதித்தலுங் கைகூடு நோற்றலி
னாற்ற றலைப்பட் டவர்க்கு

The verse says the reason those who lack are many is that practitioners of austerity are few, while non-practitioners are many.

இலர்பல ராகிய காரண நோற்பார்
சிலர்பலர் நோலா தவர்

A person without inner self-mastery who assumes the powerful appearance of an ascetic is like a cow grazing under a tiger's skin.

வலியில் நிலைமையான் வல்லுருவம் பெற்றம்
புலியின்றோல் போர்த்துமேய்ந் தற்று

Doing wrong while hidden inside the appearance of austerity is like a hunter concealed in scrub while trapping birds.

தவமறைந் தல்லவை செய்தல் புதன் மறைந்து
வேட்டுவன் புட்சிமிழ் தற்று

Neither shaving the head nor growing matted hair is necessary if one gives up the conduct that the morally discerning world condemns.

மழித்தலு நீட்டலும் வேண்டா வுலகம்
பழித்த தொழித்து விடின்

One who speaks truth in full agreement with the mind stands above those who combine austerity with giving.

மனத்தொடு வாய்மை மொழியிற் றவத்தொடு
தானஞ் செய்வாரிற் றலை

For the ascetic who does not entertain anger in the mind, the verse promises that every contemplated spiritual attainment comes together.

உள்ளிய தெல்லா முடனெய்து முள்ளத்தா
ளுள்ளான் வெகுளி யெனின்

Possessing nothing is natural to ascetic discipline; possessing even one thing returns and becomes delusion again.

இயல்பாகு நோன்பிற்கொன் றின்மை யுடைமை
மயலாகு மற்றும் பெயர்த்து

The ascetic virtue is to guard against desire, for desire can enter by deception and betray a person.

அஞ்சுவ தோரு மறனே யொருவனை
வஞ்சிப்ப தோரு மவா

Even one burned by fire may find a way to survive; those who live by wronging the spiritually great will not escape.

எரியாற் சுடப்படினு முய்வுண்டா முய்யார்
பெரியார்ப் பிழைத்தொழுகு வார்

If worthy ascetics of great spiritual excellence become angry, what use are a magnificently ordered royal life and vast wealth?

வகைமாண்ட வாழ்க்கையு வான்பொருளு மென்னாந்
தகைமாண்ட தக்கார் செறின்.

If mountain-like ascetics resolve that someone should fall, those who seem firmly established in the world will perish together with their household.

குன்றன்னார் குன்ற மதிப்பிற் குடியொடு
நின்றன்னார் மாய்வர் நிலத்து.

If those who bear exalted vows become angry, even a king will lose his kingship, broken off midway.

ஏந்திய கொள்கையார் சீறி னிடைமுரிந்து
வேந்தனும் வேந்து கெடும்.

Even those with extraordinarily great support will not escape if people distinguished by surpassing ascetic excellence become angry.

இறந்தமைந்த சார்புடைய ராயினு முய்யார்
சிறந்தமைந்த சீரார் செறின்.
