Compassion

Those rightly called Anthanar are people of virtue, for they live bearing gracious compassion toward every living being.

அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்குஞ்
செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்

Even when someone wrongs you without cause, take the better path: ache for their fault, but do nothing unjust yourself.

திறனல்ல தற்பிறர் செய்யினும் நோநொந்து
அறனல்ல செய்யாமை நன்று

Even one who loves grace and walks the household path to it is ruined the moment he covets another's wealth and plots crooked ways to get it.

அருள்வெஃகி ஆற்றின்கண் நின்றான் பொருள்வெஃகிப்
பொல்லாத சூழக் கெடும்.

When wealth reaches a person of humane discernment, it is like a useful fruit tree ripening in the centre of town.

பயன்மர முள்ளூர்ப் பழுத்தற்றாற் செல்வ
நயனுடை யான்கட் படின்

Compassion-born wealth is the wealth above all wealth; material wealth exists even among people of degraded conduct.

அருட்செல்வஞ் செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் பொருட்செல்வம்
பூரியார் கண்ணு முள

Examine by a sound method and let compassion govern you; even if you investigate through many differing paths, that compassion alone is the support.

நல்லாற்றா னாடி யருளாள்க பல்லாற்றான்
றேரினு மஃதே துணை

Entry into the dark world of suffering does not befall those whose hearts are filled with compassion.

அருள்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சினார்க் கில்லை யிருள்சேர்ந்த
வின்னா வுலகம் புகல்

The wise say that no deed which makes one's own life fear arises for one who protects enduring living beings and is governed by compassion.

மன்னுயி ரோம்பி யருளாள்வாற் கில்லென்ப
தன்னுயி ரஞ்சும் வினை

Those governed by compassion have no affliction; the great, fertile world through which the wind moves is witness.

அல்ல லருளாள்வார்க் கில்லை வளிவழங்கு
மல்லன்மா ஞாலங் கரி

Good people say that those who abandon compassion and live by doing what should not be done have forgotten the suffering caused when they formerly departed from the true good.

பொருணீங்கிப் பொச்சாந்தா ரென்ப ரருணீங்கி
யல்லவை செய்தொழுகு வார்

Those without compassion have no share in that other world, just as those without material means lack this world's enjoyments.

அருளில்லார்க் கவ்வுலக மில்லை பொருளில்லார்க்
கிவ்வுலக மில்லாகி யாங்கு

Those who lack material wealth may flourish at another time; those without compassion are ruined, and becoming otherwise is difficult.

பொருளற்றார் பூப்பரொருகா லருளற்றா
ரற்றார்மற் றாத லரிது

If one examines the virtue performed by a person without compassion, it resembles an undiscerning person's perception of ultimate reality.

தெருளாதான் மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டாற்றா றேரி
னருளாதான் செய்யு மறம்

When one goes to oppress someone weaker than oneself, let one remember one's own fear when standing before someone stronger.

வலியார்முன் றன்னை நினைக்க தான் றன்னின்
மெலியார்மேற் செல்லு மிடத்து

How can compassion govern someone who, to enlarge their own flesh, eats the flesh of another living being?

தன்னூன் பெருக்கற்குத் தான்பிறி தூனுண்பா
னெங்ஙன மாளு மருள்

Those who do not safeguard wealth cannot receive its benefit; likewise, those who eat flesh cannot receive the governing benefit of compassion.

பொருளாட்சி போற்றாதார்க் கில்லை யருளாட்சி
யாங்கில்லை யூன்றின் பவர்க்கு

As the mind of one holding a killing weapon does not incline toward good, the mind of one who has savoured another creature's body does not incline toward good.

படைகொண்டார் நெஞ்சம்போல் நன்றூக்கா தொன்ற
னுடற்சுவை யுண்டார் மனம்

If asked what compassion is: it is non-killing. If asked what is opposed to it: it is killing. Therefore, eating the flesh produced by that killing is not morally right.

அருளல்ல தியாதெனிற் கொல்லாமை கோறல்
பொருளல்ல தவ்வூன் றினல்

One should abstain from flesh if one comes to understand that flesh is the wound of another living being.

உண்ணாமை வேண்டும் புலாஅல் பிறிதொன்றன்
புண்ண துணர்வார்ப் பெறின்

Compassion-guided love is absent in those who desire another's property and watch for an unguarded moment.

அருள்கருதி யன்புடைய ராதல் பொருள்கருதிப்
பொச்சாப்புப் பார்ப்பார்க ணில்

Generosity, gracious concern, just rule, and care for the people—one who possesses all four is a light among rulers.

"கொடையளி செங்கோல் குடியோம்பல் நான்கும்
உடையானாம் வேந்தர்க் கொளி"

As the absence of rain afflicts living beings across the world, the absence of a ruler's compassionate protection afflicts those who live under his rule.

துளியின்மை ஞாலத்திற் கெற்றற்றே வேந்த
னளியின்மை வாழு முயிர்க்கு.

If a ruler is harsh in speech and without compassionate regard, his great prosperity will fail there and then, without endurance.

கடுஞ்சொல்லன் கண்ணில னாயி னெடுஞ்செல்வ
நீடின்றி யாங்கே கெடும்.

The world endures because rulers possess the surpassingly great grace called considerate regard.

கண்ணோட்ட மென்னுங் கழிபெருங் காரிகை
யுண்மையா னுண்டிவ் வுலகு.

The ways of the world rest in considerate regard; those without it are but a burden upon the earth.

கண்ணோட்டத் துள்ள துலகிய லஃதிலா
ருண்மை நிலக்குப் பொறை.

What use is a musical mode if it does not suit the song? What use are eyes that hold no considerate regard?

பண்ணென்னாம் பாடற் கியைபின்றேற் கண்ணென்னாங்
கண்ணோட்ட மில்லாத கண்.

What do eyes merely present on the face accomplish, if they show no considerate regard in due measure?

உளபோன் முகத்தெவன் செய்யு மளவினாற்
கண்ணோட்ட மில்லாத கண்.

Considerate regard is the eye's true ornament; without it, the eye is perceived as a wound.

கண்ணிற் கணிகலங் கண்ணோட்ட மஃதின்றேற்
புண்ணென் றுணரப் படும்.

Those furnished with eyes yet offering no considerate regard are like trees rooted to the earth.

மண்ணோ டியைந்த மரத்தனையர் கண்ணோ
டியைந்துகண் ணோடா தவர்.

Those without considerate regard are without eyes; among those who truly have eyes, regard cannot be absent.

கண்ணோட்ட மில்லவர் கண்ணிலர் கண்ணுடையார்
கண்ணோட்ட மின்மையு மில்.

The world rightfully belongs to those who can show considerate regard without letting their duty fail.

கருமஞ் சிதையாமற் கண்ணோட வல்லார்க்
குரிமை யுடைத்திவ் வுலகு.

For rulers, foremost is the quality of showing regard and patiently forbearing even toward people inclined to punish or hurt them.

ஒறுத்தாற்றும் பண்பினார் கண்ணுங்கண் ணோடிப்
பொறுத்தாற்றும் பண்பே தலை.

Those who seek admirable civility would knowingly drink even poison mixed for them by familiar hands and remain composed.

பெயக்கண்டு நஞ்சுண் டமைவர் நயத்தக்க
நாகரிகம் வேண்டு பவர்.

If one gains a person who can look into the mind through signs, understand the distress that has befallen, and relieve it, merely standing face to face is enough.

முகநோக்கி நிற்க வமையு மகநோக்கி
யுற்ற துணர்வார்ப் பெறின்.

Rulers should refuse and let go of revenue that does not come with compassion toward their subjects and the subjects' reciprocal affection.

அருளொடு மன்பொடும் வாரார் பொருளாக்கம்
புல்லார் புரள விடல்.

Compassion is the child born of love; wealth is the resource-endowed nurse through whom that child is sustained and grows.

அருளென்னு மன்பீன் குழவி பொருளென்னுஞ்
செல்வச் செவிலியா லுண்டு.

Fearless attack is called great martial valour; when a setback befalls the enemy, magnanimously helping them is that valour's sharper edge.

பேராண்மை யென்ப தறுகணொன் றுற்றுக்கா
லூராண்மை மற்றத னெஃகு.

Friendship turns a person away from ruinous courses, guides that person onto a good path, and shares the suffering when unavoidable adversity arrives.

அழிவி னவைநீக்கி யாறுய்த் தழிவின்க
ணல்ல லுழப்பதா நட்பு.

As the hand moves at once when a person’s garment slips, friendship goes there and then to remove a friend’s distress.

உடுக்கை யிழந்தவன் கைபோல வாங்கே
யிடுக்கண் களைவதா நட்பு.

Gambling destroys the wealth of the one who takes it up, then makes him take falsehood upon himself, then destroys the compassion that rises in his mind, and by that route brings him suffering in both worlds.

பொருள்கெடுத்துப் பொய்மேற் கொளீஇ யருள்கெடுத்
தல்ல லுழப்பிக்குஞ் சூது.

Greatness covers the place where somebody falls short; smallness states the fault and nothing but the fault — and the commentary adds that greatness also speaks the honour, and smallness also covers the merit.

அற்ற மறைக்கும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான்
குற்றமே கூறி விடும்.

Love, shame, helpful reciprocity, considerate regard and truth: five pillars propped beneath the weight called fullness of character — and the commentary qualifies every one of them.

அன்புநா ணொப்புரவு கண்ணோட்டம் வாய்மையொ
டைந்துசால் பூன்றிய தூண்.
