Courage

Unfailing courage, generosity, wisdom, and purposeful energy—these four are the proper qualities of a ruler.

அஞ்சாமை யீகையறி வூக்க மிந்நான்கு
மெஞ்சாமை வேந்தற் கியல்பு

If rulers consider every requirement without omission and act in a place fitted to them, they need no support other than fearlessness.

அஞ்சாமை யல்லாற் றுணைவேண்டா வெஞ்சாமை
யெண்ணி யிடத்தாற் செயின்

People of resolve do not shrink when their intended rise is damaged, as a great elephant maintains its bearing even when wounded by a deeply piercing arrow.

சிதைவிடத் தொல்கா ருரவோர் புதையம்பிற்
பட்டுப்பா டூன்றுங் களிறு.

Though the elephant is huge and armed with sharp tusks, it fears when a tiger attacks.

பரியது கூர்ங்கோட்ட தாயினும் யானை
வெரூஉம் புலிதாக் குறின்.

When adversity comes in the course of an undertaking, meet it with inward confidence rather than collapse; nothing equals that composure in pressing the adversity back.

இடுக்கண் வருங்கா னகுக வதனை
யடுத்தூர்வ தஃதொப்ப தில்.

Even when troubles swell like a flood, a discerning mind can regard and contain them clearly; they then lose their power to overwhelm the inner life.

வெள்ளத் தனைய விடும்பை யறிவுடையா
னுள்ளத்தி னுள்ளக் கெடும்.

Those who do not surrender to grief when adversity interrupts their work put adversity itself under strain until its hold weakens.

இடும்பைக் கிடும்பை படுப்ப ரிடும்பைக்
கிடும்பை படாஅ தவர்.

Like a draught ox that draws its cart through every obstructed passage, one who can carry an undertaking onward makes adversity itself struggle for a way.

மடுத்தவா யெல்லாம் பகடன்னா னுற்ற
விடுக்க ணிடர்ப்பாடு டைத்து.

Even when adversities arrive one upon another, they themselves are worn down against a person whose inner purpose does not disintegrate.

அடுக்கி வரினு மழிவிலா னுற்ற
விடுக்க ணிடுக்கட் படும்.

Those who did not cling to prosperity with possessive hoarding do not collapse into ‘we have nothing’ when it recedes.

அற்றேமென் றல்லற் படுபவோ பெற்றேமென்
றோம்புத றேற்றா தவர்.

Knowing that embodied life is exposed to pain, the discerning do not make panic their only response when hardship arrives.

இலக்க முடம்பிடும்பைக் கென்று கலக்கத்தைக்
கையாறாக் கொள்ளாதா மேல்.

One who does not demand uninterrupted pleasure and understands effort's ordinary hardship as part of undertaking the work is not inwardly overthrown when that hardship arrives.

இன்பம் விழையா னிடும்பை யியல்பென்பான்
றுன்ப முறுத லிலன்.

One who enjoys pleasure without inwardly handing the heart over to it does not, amid suffering, become inwardly possessed by suffering.

இன்பத்து ளின்பம் விழையாதான் றுன்பத்துட்
டுன்ப முறுத லிலன்.

When one receives the necessary hardship of worthy effort as part of its joy, a distinction arises that even rivals are moved to respect.

இன்னாமை யின்ப மெனக்கொளி னாகுந்தன்
னொன்னார் விழையுஞ் சிறப்பு.

One who can speak fittingly, does not lapse, and does not fear the assembly is difficult for anyone to defeat in debate.

சொலல்வல்லன் சோர்வில னஞ்சா னவனை
யிகல்வெல்லல் யார்க்கு மரிது.

Even when hardship closes in, people of unwavering clarity do not perform a degrading deed.

இடுக்கட் படினு மிளிவந்த செய்யார்
நடுக்கற்ற காட்சி யவர்.

The discerning hold to a twofold path: avoid unsound undertakings, and, if a sound undertaking later meets an obstacle, do not lose heart.

ஊறொரா லுற்றபி னொல்காமை யிவ்விரண்டி
னாறென்ப வாய்ந்தவர் கோள்.

Even if hardship comes through the effort, carry on with resolve the action that will yield good at its end.

துன்ப முறவரினுஞ் செய்க துணிவாற்றி
யின்பம் பயக்கும் வினை.

An envoy is learned, unafraid before an angry gaze, able to make the message land, and able to discern the means fitting to the time.

கற்றுக்கண் ணஞ்சான் செலச்சொல்லிக் காலத்தாற்
றக்க தறிவதாந் தூது.

The firm envoy who carries a ruler's mandate does not let fear make his mouth utter a blemishing or demeaning version of the entrusted message.

விடுமாற்றம் வேந்தர்க் குரைப்பான் வடுமாற்றம்
வாய்சோரா வன்க ணவன்.

Many may stand firm even before death in battle; rarer are those who can enter a discerning assembly and speak without fear.

பகையகத்துச் சாவா ரெளிய ரரிய
ரவையகத் தஞ்சா தவர்.

An army complete in its four ancient arms, unshaken by the prospect of battlefield injury, and capable of victory is foremost among a ruler's possessions.

உறுப்பமைந் தூறஞ்சா வெல்படை வேந்தன்
வெறுக்கையு ளெல்லாந் தலை.

The hardiness to stand without shrinking from injury when the force is depleted and the ruler is in battlefield distress is rarely found except in an army of long institutional continuity.

உலைவிடத் தூறஞ்சா வன்கண் டொலைவிடத்துத்
தொல்படைக் கல்லா லரிது.

That alone is an army which can join ranks and stand together even if Death itself advances enraged.

கூற்றுடன்று மேல்வரினுங் கூடி யெதிர்நிற்கு
மாற்ற லதுவே படை.

Courage, honour, following the proven path, and the ruler's confidence in the force—these four alone are protections for an army.

மறமான மாண்ட வழிச்செலவு தேற்ற
மெனநான்கே யேமம் படைக்கு.

‘Enemies, do not stand before my lord,’ an ancient warrior boasts; many who faced him before now stand only as figures in memorial stone.

என்னைமுன் னில்லன்மின் றெவ்விர் பலரென்னை
முன்னின்று கன்னின் றவர்.

It is more worthy to bear the spear that missed an elephant than the arrow that successfully struck a woodland hare.

கான முயலெய்த வம்பினில் யானை
பிழைத்தவே லேந்த லினிது.

Fearless attack is called great martial valour; when a setback befalls the enemy, magnanimously helping them is that valour's sharper edge.

பேராண்மை யென்ப தறுகணொன் றுற்றுக்கா
லூராண்மை மற்றத னெஃகு.

Having sent his hand-spear away with one elephant, the warrior searching for a weapon against the next smiles as he plucks out the spear lodged in his own body.

கைவேல் களிற்றொடு போக்கி வருபவன்
மெய்வேல் பறியா நகும்.

For the fierce warrior, if the angry eye breaks its gaze and blinks when the enemy throws a spear, is that not itself retreat?

விழித்தகண் வேல்கொண் டெறிய வழித்திமைப்பி
னொட்டன்றோ வன்க ணவர்க்கு.

Taking stock of his days, the warrior places every day without an honourable battle wound among those he counts as wasted.

விழுப்புண் படாதநா ளெல்லாம் வழுக்கினுள்
வைக்குந்தன் னாளை யெடுத்து.

For warriors who seek fame that circles the world and do not desire life, fastening the heroic anklet possesses fitting beauty.

சுழலு மிசைவேண்டி வேண்டா வுயிரார்
கழல்யாப்புக் காரிகை நீர்த்து.

Warriors who do not fear for life when battle comes do not lose their martial distinction, even when their ruler angrily restrains them.

உறினுயி ரஞ்சா மறவ ரிறைவன்
செறினுஞ் சீர்குன்ற லிலர்.

Who could reproach as failures the warriors who die rather than depart from the vow they had made?

இழைத்த திகவாமைச் சாவாரை யாரே
பிழைத்த தொறுக்கிற் பவர்.

Even adversity holds one benefit: it is a measuring rod that reveals the full measure of one’s associates.

கேட்டினு முண்டோ ருறுதி கிளைஞரை
நீட்டி யளப்பதோர் கோல்.
