Desire

For those who reach the feet of the One who has neither desire nor aversion, the sufferings of birth never arise.

வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல

Those who stand unwavering in the falsehood-free path of conduct of the One who cut off the five sense-born desires live imperishably.

பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்

Indra, king of the gods, is himself sufficient witness to the power of one who has quelled the five sensory desires.

ஐந்தவித்தான் ஆற்றல் அகல்விசும்பு ளார்கோமான்
இந்திரனே சாலுங் கரி

ரவஞ்செய்வா ராசையுட் பட்டு

Love deeply rooted in theft will, when it bears fruit, produce suffering that does not cease.

களவின்கட் கன்றிய காதல் விளைவின்கண்
வீயா விழுமந் தரும்

From each thing a person has left behind, that person is free from the suffering arising from that very thing.

யாதனின் யாதனி னீங்கியா னோத
லதனி னதனி னிலன்

Sufferings cling without letting go to those who cling without letting go to attachment.

பற்றி விடாஅ விடும்பைகள் பற்றினைப்
பற்றி விடாஅ தவர்க்கு

When desire, anger, and delusion—the three—vanish so completely that even their names disappear, the karmic suffering produced by them also ends.

காமம் வெகுளி மயக்க மிவைமூன்ற
னாமங் கெடக்கெடு நோய்

The learned call desire the seed that, for every living being and at every time, unfailingly produces renewed birth.

அவாவென்ப வெல்லா வுயிர்க்குமெஞ் ஞான்றுந்
தவாஅப் பிறப்பீனும் வித்து

If one must desire, desire freedom from birth; that freedom comes when one desires freedom from desire itself.

வேண்டுங்கால் வேண்டும் பிறவாமை மற்றது
வேண்டாமை வேண்ட வரும்

There is no excellent wealth here equal to desirelessness; in any other realm too, nothing matches it.

வேண்டாமை யன்ன விழுச்செல்வ மீண்டில்லை
யாண்டுமஃதொப்ப தில்

What is called purity is the absence of desire; that state comes through seeking truth itself.

தூஉய்மை யென்ப தவாவின்மை மற்றது
வாஅய்மை வேண்ட வரும்

Those called free are the ones free from desire; others who have removed other causes have not yet removed this one.

அற்றவ ரென்பா ரவாவற்றார் மற்றையா
ரற்றாக வற்ற திலர்

The ascetic virtue is to guard against desire, for desire can enter by deception and betray a person.

அஞ்சுவ தோரு மறனே யொருவனை
வஞ்சிப்ப தோரு மவா

If one can cut desire off completely, the unfailing deed that leads to liberation will come in the way one rightly seeks.

அவாவினை யாற்ற வறுப்பிற் றவாவினை
தான்வேண்டு மாற்றான் வரும்

For those without desire, the suffering caused by it will be absent; if desire remains, that suffering comes on and on without end.

அவாவில்லார்க் கில்லாகுந் துன்பமஃ துண்டேற்
றவாஅது மேன்மேல் வரும்

If the deepest suffering called desire comes to an end, uninterrupted joy is possible even here in embodied life.

இன்ப மிடையறா தீண்டு மவாவென்னுந்
துன்பத்துட் டுன்பங் கெடின்

If one removes desire, whose nature is never to be filled, that very state gives a nature that never departs from stability.

ஆரா வியற்கை யவாநீப்பி னந்நிலையே
பேரா வியற்கை தரும்

Seeing the world delight in what gives them delight, the learned grow more desirous of learning.

தாமின் புறுவ துலகின் புறக்கண்டு
காமுறுவர் கற்றறிந் தார்

If one can enjoy desired things without enemies knowing that attachment, the enemies' stratagems will fail.

காதல காத லறியாமை யுய்க்கிற்பின்
னேதில வேதிலார் நூல்

One who does not demand uninterrupted pleasure and understands effort's ordinary hardship as part of undertaking the work is not inwardly overthrown when that hardship arrives.

இன்பம் விழையா னிடும்பை யியல்பென்பான்
றுன்ப முறுத லிலன்.

One who enjoys pleasure without inwardly handing the heart over to it does not, amid suffering, become inwardly possessed by suffering.

இன்பத்து ளின்பம் விழையாதான் றுன்பத்துட்
டுன்ப முறுத லிலன்.

Hostility toward one blinded by rage and possessed by ever-growing desire will be eagerly chosen.

காணாச் சினத்தான் கழிபெருங் காமத்தான்
பேணாமை பேணப் படும்.

Do not desire gambling, even if you can win. What you won is the fish swallowing the hook's metal, taking it for food.

வேண்டற்க வென்றிடினுஞ் சூதினை வென்றதூஉந்
தூண்டிற்பொன் மீன்விழுங்கி யற்று.

Just as the gambler comes to love gambling more each time he loses by it, so the life within holds its love for the body more each time it suffers through it.

இழத்தொறூஉங் காதலிக்குஞ் சூதேபோற் றுன்ப
முழத்தொறூஉங் காதற் றுயிர்.
