For an envoy, the classical qualities are loyal affection, birth in a lineage fitted for ministry, and the character rulers desire. A modern representative should be chosen for demonstrated care, competence, and integrity—not ancestry.

அன்புடைமை யான்ற குடிப்பிறத்தல் வேந்தவாம்
பண்புடைமை தூதுரைப்பான் பண்பு.

Love, intelligence about what benefits one's ruler, and strength in carefully considered speech—these three are indispensable to an envoy.

அன்பறி வாராய்ந்த சொல்வன்மை தூதுரைப்பார்க்
கின்றி யமையாத மூன்று.

The envoy who must present a victory-bearing action among spear-wielding kings should be a master of political learning even among learned ministers.

நூலாரு ணூல்வல்ல னாகுதல் வேலாருள்
வென்றி வினையுரைப்பான் பண்பு.

Let the person in whom natural intelligence, a pleasing or commanding presence, and deeply examined learning converge go on the mission. The appearance standard is classical; modern fitness must never depend on beauty, body, race, disability, or conformity.

True envoy-work condenses many matters, removes needlessly harsh wording, speaks pleasantly, and thereby produces benefit. It does not omit inconvenient truth.

தொகச்சொல்லித் தூவாத நீக்கி நகச்சொல்லி
நன்றி பயப்பதாந் தூது.

An envoy is learned, unafraid before an angry gaze, able to make the message land, and able to discern the means fitting to the time.

கற்றுக்கண் ணஞ்சான் செலச்சொல்லிக் காலத்தாற்
றக்க தறிவதாந் தூது.

Foremost among envoys is the one who knows the duty, considers the time, understands the fitting place, thinks through the wording, and then delivers the message.

மிகச்செய்து தம்மெள்ளு வாரை நகச்செய்து
நட்பினுட் சாப்புல்லற் பாற்று.

When a time comes in which enemies act as friends, meet them with outward friendship while withholding inward trust, and afterward let that posture go.

பகைநட்பாங் காலம் வருங்கான் முகநட்
டகநட் பொரீஇ விடல்.

தன்றுணை யின்றாற் பகையிரண்டாற் றானொருவன்
னின்றுணையாக் கொள்கவற்றி னொன்று.
