Duty

The one we call a householder is the firm support, on the good road, of the other three orders of life — sustaining the student, the forest-dweller, and the ascetic in their chosen ways.

இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் இயல்புடைய மூவர்க்கும்
நல்லாற்றின் நின்ற துணை

To tend, without fail, the duty owed to five — the ancestors, the gods, guests, kin, and oneself — is the household's foremost virtue.

தென்புலத்தார் தெய்வம் விருந்தொக்கல் தானென்றாங்கு
ஐம்புலத்தாறு ஓம்பல் தலை

In its father-son wording, the verse calls education that equips a child to stand foremost among the learned the finest good a parent can do.

தந்தை மகற்காற்று நன்றி யவையத்து
முந்தி யிருப்பச் செயல்

Within its soul-and-body philosophy, the verse says embodied life exists so love may be enacted. A modern reader may take love as a central purpose without making it the only permitted life path.

அன்போடு இயைந்த வழக்கென்ப ஆருயிர்க்கு
என்போடு இயைந்த தொடர்பு

The ethical purpose of maintaining a settled home and its resources, the verse says, is to care for guests and help others. That purpose remains bounded by household safety, privacy, rest, and means.

இருந்தோம்பி இல்வாழ்வ தெல்லாம் விருந்தோம்பி
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு

True public duty asks no repayment. What could the world ever give back to the rain cloud?

கைம்மாறு வேண்டாக் கடப்பாடு மாரிமாட்
டென்னாற்றுங் கொல்லோ வுலகு.

All wealth earned through worthy effort is meant to be put to work in service of those for whom help is fitting.

தாளாற்றித் தந்த பொருளெல்லாந் தக்கார்க்கு
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு

Neither here nor in the world of the gods is another good easily found that equals public-minded service.

புத்தே ளுலகத்து மீண்டும் பெறலரிதே
யொப்புரவி னல்ல பிற.

The one who understands and practises what shared life calls for truly lives; the other is counted among the dead.

ஒத்த தறிவா னுயிர்வாழ்வான் மற்றையான்
செத்தாருள் வைக்கப் படும்

The wealth of a deeply wise person devoted to the world is like a village reservoir filled with water.

ஊருணி நீர்நிறைந் தற்றே யுலகவாம்
பேரறி வாளன் திரு

When wealth reaches a person of humane discernment, it is like a useful fruit tree ripening in the centre of town.

பயன்மர முள்ளூர்ப் பழுத்தற்றாற் செல்வ
நயனுடை யான்கட் படின்

In the hands of a person of great generosity, wealth is like an unfailing tree whose every part becomes medicine.

மருந்தாகித் தப்பா மரத்தற்றாற் செல்வம்
பெருந்தகை யான்கட் படின்

Those who clearly know their duty do not withdraw from helping even in a season when their own resources are limited.

இடனில் பருவத்து மொப்புரவிற் கொல்கார்
கடனறி காட்சி யவர்

A public-spirited person feels deprived only when circumstances leave them unable to perform the help their character calls for.

நயனுடையா னல்கூர்ந்தா னாதல் செயுநீர
செய்யா தமைகலா வாறு

The verse says that if public-minded service brings material loss, that loss is worth purchasing—even through the extreme image of selling oneself.

ஒப்புரவி னால்வருங் கேடெனி னஃதொருவன்
விற்றுக்கோட் டக்க துடைத்து

A ruler must carefully perform the actions that ethical authors praise as proper to rule; Parimelazhagar says that those who neglect them have no good even across seven births.

புகழ்ந்தவை போற்றிச் செயல்வேண்டுஞ் செய்யா
திகழ்ந்தார்க் கெழுமையு மில்.

Protecting and preserving the people from harm, and punishing an established offence, is not a blemish upon a ruler; it is his duty.

குடிபுறங் காத்தோம்பிக் குற்றங் கடிதல்
வடுவன்று வேந்தன் றொழில்.

The world rightfully belongs to those who can show considerate regard without letting their duty fail.

கருமஞ் சிதையாமற் கண்ணோட வல்லார்க்
குரிமை யுடைத்திவ் வுலகு.

Swiftly learning, day by day, everything that happens among everyone is the king's proper duty.

எல்லார்க்கு மெல்ல நிகழ்பவை யெஞ்ஞான்றும்
வல்லறிதல் வேந்தன் றொழில்.

One who seeks the work to be done rather than private pleasure becomes a supporting pillar, removing the suffering of those close to them.

இன்பம் விழையான் வினைவிழைவான் றன்கேளிர்
துன்பந் துடைத்தூன்றுந் தூண்.

Even when the ruler destroys offered counsel and remains ignorant, the counsellor nearby still owes him beneficial truth.

அறிகொன்றறியா னெனினு முறுதி
யுழையிருந்தான் கூறல் கடன்.

Even if the embassy may bring death, the classical envoy does not shrink from securing assured advantage for his sovereign. This extreme royal-loyalty claim must never justify unsafe work or coerced self-sacrifice today.

இறுதி பயப்பினும் எஞ்சாது இறைவற்கு
உறுதி பயப்பதாம் தூது.

Of all follies, the greatest is becoming attached to conduct that is not right or fitting for the responsibility one has accepted.

பேதைமையு ளெல்லாம் பேதைமை காதன்மை
கையல்ல தன்கட் செயல்.

For the person who discerns what is fitting and takes noble excellence upon themselves, all good things are owed — so those who know the texts say; and the commentator adds that they will simply be there, as that person's nature.

கடனென்ப நல்லவை யெல்லாங் கடனறிந்து
சான்றாண்மை மேற்கொள் பவர்க்கு.
