Eloquence

The verse uses a harsh premodern body-and-gender comparison to condemn an unlearned person's desire to display eloquence in an assembly; its direct target is speech sought without the learning needed for it.

கல்லாதான் சொற்கா முறுதன் முலையிரண்டு
மில்லாதாள் பெண்காமுற் றற்று

Wisdom expresses even difficult ideas so that they become easy to grasp, and discerns subtle meaning in the words of others.

எண்பொருள வாகச் செலச்சொல்லித் தான்பிறர்வாய்
நுண்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு

The true spy can learn concealed matters through those inside and can state what was learned without leaving the report in doubt.

மறைந்தவை கேட்கவற் றாகி யறிந்தவை
யையப்பா டில்லதே யொற்று.

One who knows justice, speaks with learned fitness, and understands effective means in every circumstance is a dependable counsellor.

அறனறிந் தான்றமைந்த சொல்லானெஞ் ஞான்றுந்
திறனறிந்தான் றேர்ச்சித் துணை.

Excellence in fitting speech is not merely one good quality among others; it stands as a distinct and surpassing excellence.

நாநல மென்னு நலனுடைமை யந்நலம்
யாநலத் துள்ளதூஉ மன்று.

Because gain and ruin can arise through speech, guard carefully against a lapse in what you say.

ஆக்கமுங் கேடு மதனால் வருதலாற்
காத்தோம்பல் சொல்லின்கட் சோர்வு.

True speech binds friendly hearers and makes even those opposed to it desire friendship.

கேட்டார்ப் பிணிக்குந் தகையவாய்க் கேளாரும்
வேட்ப மொழிவதாஞ் சொல்.

Know the capacities of speaker and hearer, then speak fittingly; no virtue or gain surpasses such speech.

திறனறிந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லை யறனும்
பொருளு மதனினூஉங் கில்.

Speak a statement only after knowing that no available counterstatement can defeat it.

சொல்லுக சொல்லைப் பிறிதோர்சொ லச்சொல்லை
வெல்லுஞ்சொ லின்மை யறிந்து.

Speak so others desire to hear, and draw out the useful meaning in what they say; this is the way of faultless excellence.

வேட்பத்தாஞ் சொல்லிப் பிறர்சொற் பயன்கோடன்
மாட்சியின் மாசற்றார் கோள்.

One who can speak fittingly, does not lapse, and does not fear the assembly is difficult for anyone to defeat in debate.

சொலல்வல்லன் சோர்வில னஞ்சா னவனை
யிகல்வெல்லல் யார்க்கு மரிது.

When someone can arrange matters in order and present them pleasantly, the world quickly undertakes the work.

விரைந்து தொழில்கேட்கு ஞால நிரந்தினிது
சொல்லுதல் வல்லார்ப் பெறின்.

Those who cannot express a point in a few faultless words are the very ones who long to say it in many.

பலசொல்லக் காமுறுவர் மன்றமா சற்ற
சிலசொல்லத் தேற்றா தவர்.

Those unable to unfold what they learned so another can understand are like clustered blossoms that give no fragrance.

இணரூழ்த்து நாறா மலரனையர் கற்ற
துணர விரித்துரையா தார்.

Love, intelligence about what benefits one's ruler, and strength in carefully considered speech—these three are indispensable to an envoy.

அன்பறி வாராய்ந்த சொல்வன்மை தூதுரைப்பார்க்
கின்றி யமையாத மூன்று.

True envoy-work condenses many matters, removes needlessly harsh wording, speaks pleasantly, and thereby produces benefit. It does not omit inconvenient truth.

தொகச்சொல்லித் தூவாத நீக்கி நகச்சொல்லி
நன்றி பயப்பதாந் தூது.

Observe the ruler's disposition, choose the fitting time, and present necessary, non-repellent matters in a manner that invites willing attention.

குறிப்பறிந்து காலங் கருதி வெறுப்பில
வேண்டுப வேட்பச் சொலல்.

Proactively state matters that are both welcome and substantially useful; leave useless matters unsaid even when the ruler asks for them.

வேட்பன சொல்லி வினையில வெஞ்ஞான்றுங்
கேட்பினுஞ் சொல்லா விடல்.

Study the assembly, weigh the kinds and force of words, and then speak in a form fitted to those who hear.

அவை யறிந்தாராய்ந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லின்
றொகையறிந்த தூய்மை யவர்.

Discern the fitting moment, understand the matter thoroughly, and then speak—this is the practice of those who know how words should move.

இடைதெரிந்து நன்குணர்ந்து சொல்லுக சொல்லி
னடைதெரிந்த நன்மை யவர்.

Those who take up speaking without knowing the assembly understand neither the forms of speech nor any art they claim to command.

அவையறியார் சொல்லன்மேற் கொள்பவர் சொல்லின்
வகையறியார் வல்லதூஉ மில்.

Those of disciplined learning, who understand both the kind of assembly and the ordering of words, do not let fear make their speech falter before a capable audience.

வகையறிந்து வல்லவை வாய்சோரார் சொல்லின்
றொகையறிந்த தூய்மை யவர்.

Among the learned, those are called truly learned who can make what they have learned reach the understanding of learned hearers.

கற்றாருட் கற்றா ரெனப்படுவர் கற்றார்முற்
கற்ற செலச்சொல்லு வார்.

However much they have studied, those who cannot make good ideas reach a good assembly effectively bring no benefit to the world.

பல்லவை கற்றும் பயமிலரே நல்லவையு
ணன்கு செலச்சொல்லா தார்.

The shoot shows how the soil lies beneath it; in the same way, the word out of a mouth shows what a person is made of.

நிலத்திற் கிடந்தமை கால்காட்டுங் காட்டுங்
குலத்திற் பிறந்தார்வாய்ச் சொல்.
