Neither giving nor self-discipline will survive on this wide earth if the sky withholds its rain.

தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியனுலகம்
வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்

To the one who has renounced the world, to the destitute, and to the dead left with no one to mourn them — the householder is friend and support.

துறந்தார்க்கும் துவ்வாதவர்க்கும் இறந்தார்க்கும்
இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் துணை

The home where a person fears wrongdoing and shares the meal before eating is a home whose line never fails; it endures through every age.

பழியஞ்சிப் பாத்தூண் உடைத்தாயின் வாழ்க்கை
வழியெஞ்சல் எஞ்ஞான்றும் இல்

A welcoming manner and kind words can be finer even than wholehearted material giving—but they do not replace food, medicine, shelter, access, or other needed help.

அகனமர்ந்து ஈதலின் நன்றே முகனமர்ந்து
இன்சொலன் ஆகப் பெறின்

The family of the one who can't bear to see others given to will waste away, without even food or clothing.

கொடுப்பது அழுக்கறுப்பான் சுற்றம் உடுப்பதூஉம்
உண்பதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்.

No one ever grew great by envy, and no generous heart ever fell from greatness.

அழுக்கற்று அகன்றாரும் இல்லை அஃதுஇலார்
பெருக்கத்தின் தீர்ந்தாரும் இல்.

True public duty asks no repayment. What could the world ever give back to the rain cloud?

கைம்மாறு வேண்டாக் கடப்பாடு மாரிமாட்
டென்னாற்றுங் கொல்லோ வுலகு.

All wealth earned through worthy effort is meant to be put to work in service of those for whom help is fitting.

தாளாற்றித் தந்த பொருளெல்லாந் தக்கார்க்கு
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு

Neither here nor in the world of the gods is another good easily found that equals public-minded service.

புத்தே ளுலகத்து மீண்டும் பெறலரிதே
யொப்புரவி னல்ல பிற.

In the hands of a person of great generosity, wealth is like an unfailing tree whose every part becomes medicine.

மருந்தாகித் தப்பா மரத்தற்றாற் செல்வம்
பெருந்தகை யான்கட் படின்

A public-spirited person feels deprived only when circumstances leave them unable to perform the help their character calls for.

நயனுடையா னல்கூர்ந்தா னாதல் செயுநீர
செய்யா தமைகலா வாறு

The verse says that if public-minded service brings material loss, that loss is worth purchasing—even through the extreme image of selling oneself.

ஒப்புரவி னால்வருங் கேடெனி னஃதொருவன்
விற்றுக்கோட் டக்க துடைத்து

Giving means placing what is needed in the hands of someone who has little. Other gifts may still be good, but they often carry an expectation of return.

வறியார்க்கொன் றீவதே யீகைமற் றெல்லாங்
குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து

Even if receiving were praised as a path to heaven, dependence on it is painful; even if no heaven followed, giving would still be good.

நல்லா றெனினுங் கொளறீது மேலுலகம்
இல்லெனினு மீதலே நன்று

The mark of nobility is giving before a person in need is forced to say, ‘I have nothing.’

இலனென்னு மெவ்வ முரையாமை யீதற்
குலனுடையான் கண்ணே யுள

Being made to ask is painful; that pain lasts for the giver until the person who asked can leave with a relieved face.

இன்னா திரக்கப் படுத லிரந்தவ
ரின்முகங் காணு மளவு

Enduring one's own hunger may show strength, but greater strength belongs to the person who relieves another's hunger.

ஆற்றுவா ராற்றல் பசியாற்ற லப்பசியை
மாற்றுவா ராற்றலிற் பின்

Relieving the consuming hunger of those with nothing is the secure place where a wealthy person stores wealth for the self.

அற்றா ரழிபசி தீர்த்தலஃ தோருவன்
பெற்றான் பொருள்வைப் புழி

The fierce affliction called hunger is unlikely to overtake one who has made a habit of sharing food.

பாத்தூண் மரீஇ யவனைப் பசியென்னுந்
தீப்பிணி தீண்ட லரிது

Do hard-hearted hoarders, who keep wealth only to lose it, never know the joy that can arise from giving?

ஈத்துவக்கு மின்ப மறியார்கொல் தாமுடைமை
வைத்திழக்கும் வன்க ணவர்

Hoarding food to fill one's store and then eating alone is surely more painful than having to ask another for food.

இரத்தலி னின்னாது மன்ற நிரப்பிய
தாமே தமிய ருணல்

Nothing is more painful than death, says the verse; yet it uses the shocking claim that even death feels sweet when one is unable to give to a person in need.

சாதலி னின்னாத தில்லை யினிததூஉ
மீத லியையாக் கடை

Give to people in poverty, and live so that honour grows from that giving; the Kural says human life has no other gain apart from such renown.

ஈத லிசைபட வாழ்த லதுவல்ல
தூதிய மில்லை யுயிர்க்கு

Whatever people say in praise comes to rest on those who give a person in poverty the one thing requested.

உரைப்பா ருரைப்பவை யெல்லா மிரப்பார்க்கொன்
றீவார்மே னிற்கும் புகழ்

Have householders perhaps forgotten their own austerity because they are intent on supplying renunciants with what sustains them?

துறந்தார்க்குத் துப்புரவு வேண்டி மறந்தார்கொன்
மற்றை யவர்க டவம்

One who speaks truth in full agreement with the mind stands above those who combine austerity with giving.

மனத்தொடு வாய்மை மொழியிற் றவத்தொடு
தானஞ் செய்வாரிற் றலை

Sharing one's food and protecting many kinds of life stands foremost among all virtues gathered by the authors of ethical texts.

பகுத்துண்டு பலலுயி ரோம்புத னூலோர்
தொகுத்தவற்று ளெல்லாந் தலை

Wealth is by nature unable to last; if it comes to you, use it at once for deeds whose good can endure.

அற்கா வியல்பிற்றுச் செல்வ மதுபெற்றா
லற்குப வாங்கே செயல்.

Unfailing courage, generosity, wisdom, and purposeful energy—these four are the proper qualities of a ruler.

அஞ்சாமை யீகையறி வூக்க மிந்நான்கு
மெஞ்சாமை வேந்தற் கியல்பு

For one able to give and protect with pleasant speech, this world will, by that leader's word, become as extensive as the leader intends.

இன்சொலா லீத்தளிக்க வல்லாற்குத் தன்சொலாற்
றான்கண் டனைத்திவ் வுலகு

Generosity, gracious concern, just rule, and care for the people—one who possesses all four is a light among rulers.

"கொடையளி செங்கோல் குடியோம்பல் நான்கும்
உடையானாம் வேந்தர்க் கொளி"

Give in the proper way after knowing the measure of your means; that is the path by which wealth is protected and put to use.

ஆற்றி னளவறிந் தீக வதுபொருள்
போற்றி வழங்கு நெறி.

Beneficence that does not weigh the limit of available means will quickly destroy the boundary of one's wealth.

உளவரை தூக்காத வொப்புர வாண்மை
வளவரை வல்லைக் கெடும்.

When one can give relatives what they need and also speak pleasantly, one will be surrounded by kin of many connected kinds.

கொடுத்தலு மின்சொலு மாற்றி னடுக்கிய
சுற்றத்தாற் சுற்றப் படும்.

In this world, no one has a circle of kin to equal that of one who gives greatly and does not cherish anger.

பெருங்கொடையான் பேணான் வெகுளி யவனின்
மருங்குடையார் மாநிலத் தில்.

A crow does not hide found food; it calls its kind and eats with them. Circle-based prosperity belongs only to people of that sharing nature.

காக்கை கரவா கரைந்துண்ணு மாக்கமு
மன்னநீ ரார்க்கே யுள.

Rulers without resolve do not attain, in this world, the proud self-regard of being called generous.

உள்ள மிலாதவ ரெய்தா ருலகத்து
வள்ளிய ரென்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

The worthy pride called beneficence rests within the quality called persevering effort.

தாளாண்மை யென்னும் தகைமக்கட் டங்கிற்றே
வேளாண்மை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

Beneficence attempted without persevering capability fails, like a demanding instrument placed in hands not prepared to wield it.

தாளாண்மை யில்லாதான் வேளாண்மை பேடிகை
வாளாண்மை போலக் கெடும்.

Cultivate the friendship of those free from blame; if already bound to people whose conduct does not accord with the right way, give even something they seek and leave that friendship.

மருவுக மாசற்றார் கேண்மையொன் றீத்து
மொருவுக வொப்பிலார் நட்பு.

If one lacking sound understanding gives with a glad heart, there is no other cause, says the verse, than the recipient’s merit.

அறிவிலா னெஞ்சுவந் தீதல் பிறிதியாது
மில்லை பெறுவான் றவம்.

One who fears what need not be feared, does not learn what must be known, lacks accord, and will not give becomes easy for an enemy to overcome.

அஞ்சு மறியா னமைவில னீகலான்
றஞ்ச மெளியன் பகைக்கு.

In its ancient patriarchal frame, the couplet says: a man who fears his wife will always fear doing good for good people.

இல்லாளை யஞ்சுவா னஞ்சுமற் றெஞ்ஞான்று
நல்லார்க்கு நல்ல செயல்.

A face that opens, giving, a kind word, and no contempt afterwards — these four, they say, are the constituents proper to a line that never varies.

நகையீகை யின்சொ லிகழாமை நான்கும்
வகையென்ப வாய்மைக் குடிக்கு.

Even where what they give has fallen away inside, an old line does not part from its own quality.

வழங்குவ துள்வீழ்ந்தக் கண்ணும் பழங்குடி
பண்பிற் றலைப்பிரித லின்று.
