Weighing every good thing, the moral codes all reach the same verdict: nothing stands higher than the greatness of those who have renounced and held firm to their discipline.

ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து
வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு

Try to measure the greatness of those who have renounced, and you set yourself an impossible sum — like counting everyone who has ever lived and died.

துறந்தார் பெருமை துணைக்கூறின் வையத்து
இறந்தாரை எண்ணிக்கொண் டற்று

Those who weigh this birth against release from it, and take up renunciation here and now, shine higher than all else on earth.

இருமை வகைதெரிந்து ஈண்டறம் பூண்டார்
பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு

Those who undertake the difficult disciplines are great; those who do not undertake them are small.

செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர்
செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார்

The greatness of sages whose word never fails is proclaimed to the world by the very mantras they have spoken.

நிறைமொழி மாந்தர் பெருமை நிலத்து
மறைமொழி காட்டி விடும்

So great is the strength of a wholehearted, faithful partner — one who, rising each day, honours her husband above all other powers — that, in the old image, even the rain would fall at her word.

தெய்வம் தொழாஅள் கொழுநன் தொழுதெழுவாள்
பெய்யெனப் பெய்யும் மழை

By right conduct people rise to greatness; by lapsing from it they draw disgrace they need never have had.

ஒழுக்கத்தின் எய்துவர் மேன்மை இழுக்கத்தின்
எய்துவர் எய்தாப் பழி.

கூற்றத்தைக் கையால் விளித்தற்றா லாற்றுவார்க்
காற்றாதா ரின்னா செயல்.

Those targeted by a king of fierce strength against enemies cannot remain anywhere, wherever they flee.

யாண்டுச்சென் றியாண்டு முளராகார் வெந்துப்பின்
வேந்து செறப்பட்ட வர்.

Even one burned by fire may find a way to survive; those who live by wronging the spiritually great will not escape.

எரியாற் சுடப்படினு முய்வுண்டா முய்யார்
பெரியார்ப் பிழைத்தொழுகு வார்

If worthy ascetics of great spiritual excellence become angry, what use are a magnificently ordered royal life and vast wealth?

வகைமாண்ட வாழ்க்கையு வான்பொருளு மென்னாந்
தகைமாண்ட தக்கார் செறின்.

If mountain-like ascetics resolve that someone should fall, those who seem firmly established in the world will perish together with their household.

குன்றன்னார் குன்ற மதிப்பிற் குடியொடு
நின்றன்னார் மாய்வர் நிலத்து.

If those who bear exalted vows become angry, even a king will lose his kingship, broken off midway.

ஏந்திய கொள்கையார் சீறி னிடைமுரிந்து
வேந்தனும் வேந்து கெடும்.

Even those with extraordinarily great support will not escape if people distinguished by surpassing ascetic excellence become angry.

இறந்தமைந்த சார்புடைய ராயினு முய்யார்
சிறந்தமைந்த சீரார் செறின்.

In its ancient patriarchal frame, the couplet says: even if they live like the gods, those who fear their wife's bamboo-like shoulders lack masculine distinction.

இமையாரின் வாழினும் பாடிலரே யில்லா
ளமையார்டோ ளஞ்சு பவர்.

Even those who stand like a hill are brought low, if they do the things that bring low — even by so much as the weight of one abrus seed.

குன்றி னனையாருங் குன்றுவர் குன்றுவ
குன்றி யனைய செயின்.

For a person, the radiance is an abundance in the mind — the surplus that intends to do what others find too hard; and for a person, the disgrace is the saying: we shall live, having left that behind.

ஒளியொருவற் குள்ள வெறுக்கை யிளியொருவற்
கஃதிறந்து வாழ்து மெனல்.

Birth is alike for every living thing; distinction is not alike — and the reason is the difference in the work that is done.

பிறப்பொக்கு மெல்லா வுயிர்க்குஞ் சிறப்பொவ்வா
செய்தொழில் வேற்றுமை யான்.

Those who are not high, though they sit high, do not become high; those who are not low, though they sit low, do not become low.

மேலிருந்து மேலல்லார் மேலல்லர் கீழிருந்துங்
கீழல்லார் கீழல் லவர்

As with women of undivided mind, so with greatness too: it exists when a person keeps himself, by himself, and lives so — and the commentary names what is kept in both halves with one word, firmness.

ஒருமை மகளிரே போலப் பெருமையுந்
தன்னைத்தான் கொண்டொழுகி னுண்டு.

Those who possess greatness are able to carry through, by the very way of doing them, the deeds that are hard and rare — and the commentary adds: even when their own means are poor.

பெருமை யுடையவ ராற்றுவா ராற்றி
னருமை யுடைய செயல்.

In the awareness of the small there is not the aim that says: we shall attend upon the great and take their nature for ourselves.

சிறியா ருணர்ச்சியு ளில்லை பெரியாரைப்
பேணிக்கொள் வேமென்னு நோக்கு.

Distinction itself, if it settles upon those who are not worthy of it, becomes a thing whose whole work is excess — and the commentary adds that upon those it fits, the same distinction produces composure instead.

இறப்பே புரிந்த தொழிற்றாஞ் சிறப்புந்தான்
சீரல் லவர்கட் படின்

Greatness always bows; smallness always decks itself out, in admiration of itself — and the commentary adds that the first happens when the grounds are there and the second when they are not.

பணியுமா மென்றும் பெருமை சிறுமை
யணியுமாந் தன்னை வியந்து.

Greatness is the absence of conceit; smallness is climbing onto conceit and riding it — and the commentary adds that the ride ends at the far edge of arrogance.

பெருமை பெருமித மின்மை சிறுமை
பெருமித மூர்ந்து விடல்.

Greatness covers the place where somebody falls short; smallness states the fault and nothing but the fault — and the commentary adds that greatness also speaks the honour, and smallness also covers the merit.

அற்ற மறைக்கும் பெருமை சிறுமைதான்
குற்றமே கூறி விடும்.
