The partner who stays wholly true to the one she has married wins great honour — a high place even in the world of the gods above.

Those who want fame with honour standing alongside it will certainly not do, even for fame, the things that are not fame.

சீரினுஞ் சீரல்ல செய்யாரே சீரொடு
பேராண்மை வேண்டு பவர்

When wealth is at the full, bowing is what is required; when means have shrunk to little, what is required is height.

Even those who stand like a hill are brought low, if they do the things that bring low — even by so much as the weight of one abrus seed.

குன்றி னனையாருங் குன்றுவர் குன்றுவ
குன்றி யனைய செயின்.

It brings no fame here, and it does not carry you across to the world of the gods — so what, then, does it do: this standing behind those who hold you in contempt?

புகழின்றாற் புத்தேணாட் டுய்யாதா லென்மற்
றிகழ்வார்பின் சென்று நிலை.

Than that a man should live by going and standing behind those who will not have him, it is better that he be spoken of, in that very state, as having been finished — and the classical commentary reads that last word as having died.

ஒட்டார்பின் சென்றொருவன் வாழ்தலி னந்நிலையே
கெட்டா னெனப்படுத னன்று.

Is the life that tends the flesh, then, a medicine — at the point when the dignity of great character has come to be destroyed?

மருந்தோமற் றூனோம்பும் வாழ்க்கை பெருந்தகைமை
பீடழிய வந்த விடத்து.

Those who are like the kavarimā, which will not live if a single hair is parted from it, will part with life if humiliation comes.

மயிர்நீப்பின் வாழாக் கவரிமா வன்னா
ருயிர்நீப்பர் மானம் வரின்.

The world bows to and praises the light of those possessed of honour who do not live on when disgrace comes — and the commentary names that light as the form of their fame, and adds that the world does so at all times.

இளிவரின் வாழாத மான முடையா
ரொளிதொழு தேத்து முலகு.

Those who are not high, though they sit high, do not become high; those who are not low, though they sit low, do not become low.

மேலிருந்து மேலல்லார் மேலல்லர் கீழிருந்துங்
கீழல்லார் கீழல் லவர்

Distinction itself, if it settles upon those who are not worthy of it, becomes a thing whose whole work is excess — and the commentary adds that upon those it fits, the same distinction produces composure instead.
