Humility

A head that does not bow to the feet of the One of eight qualities is as useless as a sense organ unable to grasp its proper object.

கோளில் பொறியின் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான்
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை

Humility and kind speech are a person's true adornment; no external ornament equals them. Humility here is non-arrogance, not submission or self-erasure.

பணிவுடையன் இன்சொலன் ஆதல் ஒருவற்கு
அணியல்ல மற்றுப் பிற

Humility becomes everyone, but on those who are prosperous it shines like a crowning wealth.

எல்லார்க்கும் நன்றாம் பணிதல் அவருள்ளும்
செல்வர்க்கே செல்வம் தகைத்து.

The learned once stood yearning before teachers as people without wealth stood before the wealthy; those who did not learn are called low in the verse's ancient hierarchy.

உடையார்முன் னில்லார்போ லேக்கற்றுங் கற்றார்
கடையரே கல்லா தவர்

It is difficult for those without subtle learning gained by listening to possess speech that bends with humility.

நுணங்கிய கேள்விய ரல்லார் வணங்கிய
வாயின ராத லரிது

Do not despise the ruler as younger or related; conduct yourself in keeping with the standing dignity of kingship.

இளைய ரினமுறைய ரென்றிகழார் நின்ற
வொளியோ டொழுகப் படும்.

Among all qualities praised as good, especially good is the restraint not to speak ahead of those senior in learning.

நன்றென் றவற்றுள்ளு நன்றே முதுவருண்
முந்து கிளவாச் செறிவு.

Before the learned, present what you know so that it reaches them; then learn the greater matters from those whose learning exceeds yours.

கற்றார்முற் கற்ற செலச்சொல்லித் தாங்கற்ற
மிக்காருண் மிக்க கொளல்.

Do not take an enemy’s deferential words as goodwill: the bow’s bend, too, is directed toward harm.

சொல்வணக்க மொன்னார்கட் கொள்ளற்க வில்வணக்கந்
தீங்கு குறித்தமை யான்.

Not scorning the capability of those who can carry undertakings through is foremost among all the safeguards of people who protect themselves.

ஆற்றுவா ராற்ற லிகழாமை போற்றுவார்
போற்றலு ளெல்லாந் தலை.

If you want good, want the holding of self-restraint; if you want standing, then want humility toward anyone at all.

நலம்வேண்டி னாணுடைமை வேண்டுங் குலம்வேண்டின்
வேண்டுக யார்க்கும் பணிவு.

When wealth is at the full, bowing is what is required; when means have shrunk to little, what is required is height.

பெருக்கத்து வேண்டும் பணிதல் சிறிய
சுருக்கத்து வேண்டு முயர்வு.

In the awareness of the small there is not the aim that says: we shall attend upon the great and take their nature for ourselves.

சிறியா ருணர்ச்சியு ளில்லை பெரியாரைப்
பேணிக்கொள் வேமென்னு நோக்கு.

Greatness always bows; smallness always decks itself out, in admiration of itself — and the commentary adds that the first happens when the grounds are there and the second when they are not.

பணியுமா மென்றும் பெருமை சிறுமை
யணியுமாந் தன்னை வியந்து.

Greatness is the absence of conceit; smallness is climbing onto conceit and riding it — and the commentary adds that the ride ends at the far edge of arrogance.

பெருமை பெருமித மின்மை சிறுமை
பெருமித மூர்ந்து விடல்.

The strength of those who get things done is the bending low; and that same bending is the weapon by which the worthy turn hostility out of their opponents — the commentary specifying that the bending is done in order to gather those who will help.

ஆற்றுவா ராற்றல் பணித லதுசான்றோர்
மாற்றாரை மாற்றும் படை.

If you ask what the assay for fullness of character is: it is taking, from those who are not one's equals, the same defeat one would take from those above — the commentary calling that quality gold and the test the stone it is rubbed on.

சால்பிற்குக் கட்டளை யாதெனிற் றோல்வி
துலையல்லார் கண்ணுங் கொளல்.

Because of being easy of access to everyone, the path called the possession of humane character is easy to reach, so they say — the commentator adding that the path itself is a difficult one.

எண்பதத்தா லெய்த லெளிதென்ப யார்மாட்டும்
பண்புடைமை யென்னும் வழக்கு.
