Ignorance

If one examines the virtue performed by a person without compassion, it resembles an undiscerning person's perception of ultimate reality.

தெருளாதான் மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டாற்றா றேரி
னருளாதான் செய்யு மறம்

Those who understand nothing beyond theft come to ruin the very moment they form thoughts outside the right measure.

அளவல்ல செய்தாங்கே வீவர் களவல்ல
மற்றைய தேற்றா தவர்

Regarding what cannot last as though it were lasting is the lowest form of understanding for a renunciant.

நில்லாத வற்றை நிலையின வென்றுணரும்
புல்லறி வாண்மை கடை

Mistaking what lacks ultimate reality for reality is the delusion that, in this teaching, produces a joyless birth.

பொருளல் லவற்றைப் பொருளென் றுணரு
மருளானா மாணாப் பிறப்பு

Wisdom is seeing the pure and excellent reality called liberation, so that the ignorance which causes rebirth may depart.

பிறப்பென்னும் பேதைமை நீங்கச் சிறப்பென்னும்
செம்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு

Classical praise calls the learned sighted and, in a deliberately harsh contrast, calls the unlearned face's eyes wounds.

கண்ணுடைய ரென்பவர் கற்றோர் முகத்திரண்டு
புண்ணுடையர் கல்லா தவர்

Entering a learned assembly without the study that makes one adequately prepared is like trying to play a board game without its board.

அரங்கின்றி வட்டாடி யற்றே நிரம்பிய
நூலின்றிக் கோட்டி கொளல்

The verse uses a harsh premodern body-and-gender comparison to condemn an unlearned person's desire to display eloquence in an assembly; its direct target is speech sought without the learning needed for it.

கல்லாதான் சொற்கா முறுதன் முலையிரண்டு
மில்லாதாள் பெண்காமுற் றற்று

Even those without learning may appear very good if they can remain silent before learned people.

கல்லா தவரு நனிநல்லர் கற்றார்முற்
சொல்லா திருக்கப் பெறின்

However excellent an unlearned person's subtle insight may be, the learned do not accept it as cultivated understanding.

கல்லாதா னொட்பங் கழிய நன்றாயினுங்
கொள்ளா ரறிவுடை யார்

An unlearned person's self-estimated intellectual stature collapses when informed discussion begins.

கல்லா வொருவன் தகைமை தலைப்பெய்து
சொல்லாடச் சோர்வு படும்

The verse severely says that the unlearned merely ‘exist’ and, yielding no benefit, resemble barren land.

உளரென்னு மாத்திரைய ரல்லாற் பயவாக்
களரனையர் கல்லா தவர்

The physical beauty of a person without subtle, distinguished, penetrating learning is, the verse says, like the beauty of an ornamented clay figure.

நுண்மா ணுழைபுல மில்லா னெழினல
மண்மாண் புனைபாவை யற்று

The wealth held by the unlearned is more grievous, the verse says, than poverty resting with the learned.

நல்லார்கட் பட்ட வறுமையி னின்னாதே
கல்லார்கட் பட்ட திரு

Though unlearned people are born into a ‘higher’ caste, they lack the honour possessed by learned people born into a ‘lower’ caste, the verse says.

மேற்பிறந்தா ராயினுங் கல்லாதார் கீழ்ப்பிறந்துங்
கற்றா ரனைத்திலர் பாடு

Compared with those who have learned illuminating works, all others resemble animals in relation to human beings, the verse says.

விலங்கொடு மக்க ளனைய ரிலங்குநூல்
கற்றாரோ டேனை யவர்

Even if a person has not studied, let that person listen; in a time of weakness, what is heard will be a support like a staff.

கற்றில னாயினுங் கேட்க வஃதொருவற்
கொற்கத்தி னூற்றாந் துணை

Even when they register sound, ears not opened by learning remain, in the verse's metaphor, as though they did not hear.

கேட்பினுங் கேளாத் தகையவே கேள்வியாற்
றோட்கப் படாத செவி

What does it matter, the verse asks with severe hyperbole, whether people live or die if they know the mouth’s taste but never discern the taste available through learning?

செவியிற் சுவையுணரா வாயுணர்வின் மாக்க
ளவியினும் வாழினு மென்

Even among those who have mastered rare learning and are free from fault, close examination rarely finds a complete absence of ignorance.

அரியகற் றாசற்றார் கண்ணுந் தெரியுங்கா
லின்மை யரிதே வெளிறு.

There is no burden upon the earth heavier than a tyrant binding the unlearned to himself as his faction and counsel.

கல்லார்ப் பிணிக்குங் கடுங்கோ லதுவல்ல
தில்லை நிலக்குப் பொறை.

Those who take up speaking without knowing the assembly understand neither the forms of speech nor any art they claim to command.

அவையறியார் சொல்லன்மேற் கொள்பவர் சொல்லின்
வகையறியார் வல்லதூஉ மில்.

Those who have learned and understood yet fear the assembly of good people are classically judged below the unlearned, because their learning is not used there.

கல்லாதவரிற் கடையென்ப கற்றறிந்து
நல்லா ரவையஞ்சு வார்.

If an established friend does something that causes pain, first understand its cause as either ignorance or excessive familiar liberty.

பேதைமை யொன்றோ பெருங்கிழமை யென்றுணர்க
நோதக்க நட்டார் செயின்.

Among all forms of lack, lack of understanding is the deepest; the world does not reckon lack of other possessions as that same kind of want.

அறிவின்மை யின்மையு ளின்மை பிறிதின்மை
யின்மையா வையா துலகு.

If one lacking sound understanding gives with a glad heart, there is no other cause, says the verse, than the recipient’s merit.

அறிவிலா னெஞ்சுவந் தீதல் பிறிதியாது
மில்லை பெறுவான் றவம்.

The suffering that those lacking sound understanding inflict upon themselves is difficult even for their enemies to cause.

அறிவிலார் தாந்தம்மைப் பீழிக்கும் பீழை
செறுவார்க்குஞ் செய்த லரிது.

What is called shallow understanding? It is the conceit that says, “We possess keen understanding.”

வெண்மை யெனப்படுவ தியாதெனி னொண்மை
யுடையம்யா மென்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

Assuming the posture of mastery in what one has not learned causes doubt even about what one has learned thoroughly and truly masters.

கல்லாத மேற்கொண் டொழுகல் கசடற
வல்லதூஉ மையந் தரும்.

When faults within oneself remain unconcealed, can merely covering bodily nakedness be considered true concealment? That too is shallow understanding.

அற்ற மறைத்தலோ புல்லறிவு தம்வயிற்
குற்ற மறையா வழி.

One who lets rare and precious counsel slip away creates a great burden for oneself.

அருமறை சோரு மறிவிலான் செய்யும்
பெருமிறை தானே தனக்கு.

He neither acts even when soundly instructed nor discerns for himself; until that life departs, the verse harshly calls it one continuing affliction.

ஏவவுஞ் செய்கலான் றான்றேறா னவ்வுயிர்
போஒ மளவுமோர் நோய்.

One who tries to show an unreceptive person is himself dismissed as unseeing; the unreceptive person counts only his own way of seeing as knowledge.

காணாதாற் காட்டுவான் றான்காணான் காணாதான்
கண்டானாந் தான்கண்டா வாறு.

One who denies the existence of what a discerning community affirms does exist will, the verse harshly says, be regarded in the world as a spectre.

உலகத்தா ருண்டென்ப தில்லென்பான் வையத்
தலகையா வைக்கப் படும்.

Those whose harmful judgment clings to hostility cannot see the true and just principle that leads to victory.

மிகன்மேவன் மெய்ப்பொருள் காண ரிகன்மேவ
லின்னா வறிவி னவர்.

One who fears what need not be feared, does not learn what must be known, lacks accord, and will not give becomes easy for an enemy to overcome.

அஞ்சு மறியா னமைவில னீகலான்
றஞ்ச மெளியன் பகைக்கு.

If one meets an enemy ignorant of justice and fearful, the lofty advantage of those opposing that enemy will not depart.

செறுவார்க்குச் சேணிகவா வின்ப மறிவிலா
வஞ்சும் பகைவர்ப் பெறின்.

Renown will never attach to one who refuses the easy gain available in opposing an unlearned and angry adversary.

கல்லான் வெகுளுஞ் சிறுபொரு ளெஞ்ஞான்று
மொல்லானை ஒல்லா தொளி.

To give away material wealth and obtain bodily self-unawareness in return is an exchange rooted in ignorance.

கையறி யாமை யுடைத்தே பொருள்கொடுத்து
மெய்யறி யாமை கொளல்.

Though they have a sharpness like the sharpness of a file, those who lack the quality proper to good people are like a tree.

அரம்போலுங் கூர்மைய ரேனு மரம்போல்வர்
மக்கட்பண் பில்லா தவர்.
