Impartiality

There is one virtue called fairness — holding to the right equally toward enemy, stranger, and friend; that alone, says Valluvar, is the true good.

தகுதி எனவொன்று நன்றே பகுதியான்
பாற்பட்டு ஒழுகப் பெறின்.

The wealth of an upright person does not crumble; it endures, and becomes a strength even to their descendants.

செப்பம் உடையவன் ஆக்கம் சிதைவின்றி
எச்சத்திற்கு ஏமாப்பு உடைத்து.

Even if it brings only profit, let go the very day it comes of any wealth gained by swerving from what is fair.

கோடாமை சான்றோர்க்கு அணி.

Straight speech is fairness — but only when it rests on a mind with no inner bias.

உட்கோட்டம் இன்மை பெறின்.

நயனில சொல்லினும் சொல்லுக சான்றோர்
பயனில சொல்லாமை நன்று.

If a king does not regard everyone identically but recognises each according to rank or fitness, many relatives and retainers will remain with him for that distinction.

பொதுநோக்கான் வேந்தன் வரிசையா நோக்கி
னதுநோக்கி வாழ்வார் பலர்.

The right course is to investigate an offence, show no favoritism to anyone, remain impartial, consult those learned in the law about the prescribed penalty, and impose only that measure.

ஓர்ந்துகண் ணோடா திறைபுரிந் தியார்மாட்டுந்
தேர்ந்துசெய் வஃதே முறை.

A king is one who investigates impartially and punishes in proportion to the offence, in a way that prevents it from advancing or recurring.

லொத்தாங் கொறுப்பது வேந்து.
