Listening

Among forms of wealth, wealth gained through attentive listening is wealth indeed; that wealth stands foremost among them all.

செல்வத்துட் செல்வஞ் செவிச்செல்வ மச்செல்வஞ்
செல்வத்து ளெல்லாந் தலை

Only when there is no nourishment for the ear should a little nourishment be given to the stomach.

செவிக்குண வில்லாத போழ்து சிறிது
வயிற்றுக்கு மீயப் படும்

People who possess learning as food for the ear, though on earth, are like the gods who receive sacrificial offerings.

செவியுணவிற் கேள்வி யுடையாரவியுணவி
னான்றாரோ டொப்பர் நிலத்து

Even if a person has not studied, let that person listen; in a time of weakness, what is heard will be a support like a staff.

கற்றில னாயினுங் கேட்க வஃதொருவற்
கொற்கத்தி னூற்றாந் துணை

The words spoken by people of ethical conduct are like a staff that supports a traveller wherever the ground is slippery.

இழுக்க லுடையுழி யூற்றுக்கோ லற்றே
யொழுக்க முடையார்வாய்ச் சொல்

Listen to good and useful truths, however small their measure; each measure will yield a corresponding fullness of mature excellence.

எனைத்தானு நல்லவை கேட்க வனைத்தானு
மான்ற பெருமை தரும்

Those whose listening has accumulated through careful discernment will not voice a foolish claim, even when they have first understood something incorrectly.

பிழைத்துணர்ந்தும் பேதைமை சொல்லா ரிழைத்துணர்ந்
தீண்டிய கேள்வி யவர்

Even when they register sound, ears not opened by learning remain, in the verse's metaphor, as though they did not hear.

கேட்பினுங் கேளாத் தகையவே கேள்வியாற்
றோட்கப் படாத செவி

It is difficult for those without subtle learning gained by listening to possess speech that bends with humility.

நுணங்கிய கேள்விய ரல்லார் வணங்கிய
வாயின ராத லரிது

What does it matter, the verse asks with severe hyperbole, whether people live or die if they know the mouth’s taste but never discern the taste available through learning?

செவியிற் சுவையுணரா வாயுணர்வின் மாக்க
ளவியினும் வாழினு மென்

Speak so others desire to hear, and draw out the useful meaning in what they say; this is the way of faultless excellence.

வேட்பத்தாஞ் சொல்லிப் பிறர்சொற் பயன்கோடன்
மாட்சியின் மாசற்றார் கோள்.

The method for one undertaking a task is to take into their own understanding the thought of one who knows that task from within.

செய்வினை செய்வான் செயன்முறை யவ்வினை
யுள்ளறிவா னுள்ளங் கொளல்.

One who lets rare and precious counsel slip away creates a great burden for oneself.

அருமறை சோரு மறிவிலான் செய்யும்
பெருமிறை தானே தனக்கு.

He neither acts even when soundly instructed nor discerns for himself; until that life departs, the verse harshly calls it one continuing affliction.

ஏவவுஞ் செய்கலான் றான்றேறா னவ்வுயிர்
போஒ மளவுமோர் நோய்.

One who tries to show an unreceptive person is himself dismissed as unseeing; the unreceptive person counts only his own way of seeing as knowledge.

காணாதாற் காட்டுவான் றான்காணான் காணாதான்
கண்டானாந் தான்கண்டா வாறு.
