Measuring strength

When one goes to oppress someone weaker than oneself, let one remember one's own fear when standing before someone stronger.

வலியார்முன் றன்னை நினைக்க தான் றன்னின்
மெலியார்மேற் செல்லு மிடத்து

Restraint of anger is real when one controls it where it could cause harm; where anger has no power, controlling it proves nothing.

செல்லிடத்துக் காப்பான் சினங்காப்பா னல்லிடத்துக்
காக்கிலென் காவாக்கா லென்

Anger where it cannot strike is harmful to the angry person; where it can strike, no evil is worse than using that power in anger.

செல்லா விடத்துச் சினந்தீது செல்லிடத்து
மில்லதனிற் றீய பிற

Whoever prizes anger as proof of strength inevitably loses that strength, as surely as a hand striking the ground meets the force of its own blow.

சினத்தைப் பொருளென்று கொண்டவன் கேடு
நிலத்தறைந்தான் கைபிழையா தற்று

To live guided by companions greater than oneself is foremost among every form of strength.

தம்மிற் பெரியார் தமரா வொழுகுதல்
வன்மையு ளெல்லாந் தலை

Weigh the strength of the task, one's own strength, the opponent's strength, and allies' strength before acting.

வினைவலியுந் தன்வலியு மாற்றான் வலியுந்
துணைவலியுந் தூக்கிச் செயல்.

For those who know what is possible, learn what it requires, and remain fixed upon it, nothing is unattainable.

ஒல்வதறிவ தறிந்ததன் கட்டங்கிச்
செல்வார்க்குச் செல்லாத தில்.

Many, not knowing the measure of their own strength, have surged forward through excitement and broken down midway.

உடைத்தம் வலியறியா ரூக்கத்தி னூக்கி
யிடைக்கண் முரிந்தார் பலர்.

One who neither lives in accord with surrounding powers nor knows his own measure, but admires himself, quickly comes to ruin.

அமைந்தாங் கொழுகா னளவறியான் றன்னை
வியந்தான் விரைந்து கெடும்

Even a cart loaded with peacock feathers will have its axle break if that light load is piled on beyond what it can bear.

பீலிபெய் சாகாடு மச்சிறு மப்பண்டஞ்
சால மிகுத்துப் பெயின்

For one already standing at a branch's tip, pushing beyond that limit can make the impulse itself an end to life.

நுனிக்கொம்ப ரேறினா ரஃதிறந் தூக்கி
னுயிர்க்கிறுதி யாகி விடும்.

Give in the proper way after knowing the measure of your means; that is the path by which wealth is protected and put to use.

ஆற்றி னளவறிந் தீக வதுபொருள்
போற்றி வழங்கு நெறி.

There is no harm if the channel of income is small, provided the channel of expenditure does not become wider.

ஆகா றளவிட்டி தாயினுங் கேடில்லை
போகா றகலாக் கடை.

The life of one who does not live according to known means appears to exist, then becomes nothing and vanishes without even that appearance.

அளவறிந்து வாழாதான் வாழ்க்கை யுளபோல
வில்லாகித் தோன்றாக் கெடும்.

Beneficence that does not weigh the limit of available means will quickly destroy the boundary of one's wealth.

உளவரை தூக்காத வொப்புர வாண்மை
வளவரை வல்லைக் கெடும்.

Even those without strength can become capable and prevail if they know the fitting place, protect themselves, and act against their opponents.

ஆற்றாரு மாற்றி யடுப விடனறிந்து
போற்றார்கட் போற்றிச் செயின்

In deep water the crocodile defeats other creatures; if it leaves the waters in which it prevails, other creatures defeat it.

நெடும்புனலுள் வெல்லு முதலை யடும்புனலி
னீங்கி னதனைப் பிற

If the ruler with a great army enters the ground reached by the ruler with a small army, the greater army's confidence will perish.

சிறுபடையான் செல்லிடஞ் சேரி னுறுபடையா
னூக்க மழிந்து விடும்

A jackal will kill the fearless-eyed elephant whose tusks have pierced spear-bearing fighters, if the elephant stands in ground where its feet sink.

காலாழ் களரி னரியடுங் கண்ணஞ்சா
வேலாண் முகத்த களிறு

A task should be assigned only to one who knows how to do it, can endure the difficulties caused by the work and its obstacles, and can bring it to completion—not to someone merely because they are personally dear.

அறிந்தாற்றிச் செய்கிற்பாற் கல்லால் வினைதான்
சிறந்தானென் றேவற்பாற் றன்று.

Harsh speech and punishment exceeding the offence are a file that wears away the ruler's iron strength for conquering enemies.

கடுமொழியுங் கையிகந்த தண்டமும் வேந்த
னடுமுரண் டேய்க்கு மரம்.

Do not despise people because their outward form or bearing seems small; the world has steadfast contributors like the little linchpin that secures a great rolling chariot.

உருவுகண் டெள்ளாமை வேண்டு முருள்பெருந்தேர்க்
கச்சாணி யன்னா ருடைத்து.

Even if the enemy host figured as mice roars like the sea, what harm can it do? At the cobra's mere breath it perishes—an intentionally unequal image of ancient martial boasting.

ஒலித்தக்கா லென்னா முவரி யெலிப்பகை
நாக முயிர்ப்பக் கெடும்.

Guard against taking up enmity with those stronger than yourself; do not refrain, but seek enmity toward those weaker, says the verse.

வலியார்க்கு மாறேற்ற லோம்புக வோம்பா
மெலியார்மேன் மேக பகை.

Without affection for one’s circle, without strong support, and without strength oneself, how can one repel an enemy’s force?

அன்பில னான்ற துணையிலன் றான்றுவ்வா
னென்பரியு மேதிலான் றுப்பு.

பகைவர்கட் பட்ட செருக்கு.

A household afflicted by internal enmity has its strength worn away, as iron is worn down by the file that rubs against it.

அரம்பொருத பொன்போலத் தேயு முரம்பொரு
துட்பகை யுற்ற குடி.

Not scorning the capability of those who can carry undertakings through is foremost among all the safeguards of people who protect themselves.

ஆற்றுவா ராற்ற லிகழாமை போற்றுவார்
போற்றலு ளெல்லாந் தலை.

For those without the power to initiate a hurtful act against those who possess it is like beckoning Death with one's own hand.

கூற்றத்தைக் கையால் விளித்தற்றா லாற்றுவார்க்
காற்றாதா ரின்னா செயல்.

Whether it goes past the measure or falls short of it, the three that the treatise-holders reckoned, with wind first among them, will make disease.

மிகினுங் குறையினு நோய் செய்யு நூலோர்
வளிமுதலா வெண்ணிய மூன்று.

The measure of the one it has come upon, the measure of the illness, and the time: the one who has studied weighs these, and acts.

உற்றா னளவும் பிணியளவுங் காலமுங்
கற்றான் கருதிச் செயல்.
