Nobility of descent

Good conduct is the true mark of noble standing; a lapse in conduct drops a person to a lower one.

ஒழுக்கம் உடைமை குடிமை இழுக்கம்
இழிந்த பிறப்பாய் விடும்.

The mark of nobility is giving before a person in need is forced to say, ‘I have nothing.’

அன்புடைமை யான்ற குடிப்பிறத்தல் வேந்தவாம்
பண்புடைமை தூதுரைப்பான் பண்பு.

One should secure, even at some cost, the friendship of a person born to high status who feels shame at blame against himself.

குடிப்பிறந்து தன்கட் பழிநாணு வானைக்
கொடுத்துங் கொளல்வேண்டு நட்பு.

Rectitude and self-respect, arriving together as one thing and not by nature otherwise, are what the old line places in those born to a house that holds them.

இற்பிறந்தார் கண்ணல்ல தில்லை யியல்பாகச்
செப்பமும் நாணு மொருங்கு.

மிழுக்கார் குடிப்பிறந் தார்.

நகையீகை யின்சொ லிகழாமை நான்கும்
வகையென்ப வாய்மைக் குடிக்கு.

Even were they given crores heaped upon crores, those born to such a house have no doing of the things that make them less.

அடுக்கிய கோடி பெறினுங் குடிப்பிறந்தார்
குன்றுவ செய்த லிலர்.

குலத்திற் பிறந்தார்வாய்ச் சொல்.

If you want good, want the holding of self-restraint; if you want standing, then want humility toward anyone at all.

நலம்வேண்டி னாணுடைமை வேண்டுங் குலம்வேண்டின்
வேண்டுக யார்க்கும் பணிவு.

Birth is alike for every living thing; distinction is not alike — and the reason is the difference in the work that is done.

Great wealth obtained by one who lacks the quality is like good milk that has turned, through a fault in the vessel it was received into.

பண்பிலான் பெற்ற பெருஞ்செல்வ நன்பாற்
கலந்தீமை யாற்றிரிந் தற்று.
