Place and position

If love is missing as the household's inner support, what can place, wealth, helpers, and other external resources accomplish? The verse is about domestic supports, not bodily appearance or ability.

புறத்துறுப் பெல்லாம் எவன்செய்யும் யாக்கை
அகத்துறுப் பன்பி லவர்க்கு

For a person who learns, any country and any town can become a place of belonging; why, the verse asks, remain without learning until death?

யாதானு நாடாமா லூராமா லென்னொருவன்
சாந்துணையுங் கல்லாத வாறு

Even an ambition as vast as the world can come within reach if one acts after considering the fitting time and place.

ஞாலங் கருதினுங் கைகூடுங் காலங்
கருதி யிடத்தாற் செயின்

Begin no undertaking against an opponent, and do not despise them, until the place for bringing the action to completion has been found.

தொடங்கற்க வெவ்வினையு மெள்ளற்க முற்று
மிடங்கண்ட பின்னல் லது

Even for those whose strength is joined with martial skill, the advantage gained by joining a fort yields many benefits.

முரண்சேர்ந்த மொய்ம்பி னவர்க்கு மரண்சேர்ந்தா
மாக்கம் பலவுந் தரும்

Even those without strength can become capable and prevail if they know the fitting place, protect themselves, and act against their opponents.

ஆற்றாரு மாற்றி யடுப விடனறிந்து
போற்றார்கட் போற்றிச் செயின்

If those who have found the fitting place draw near, hold their position, and act, the opponents who planned victory will lose that plan.

எண்ணியா ரெண்ண மிழப்ப ரிடனறிந்து
துன்னியார் துன்னிச் செயின்

In deep water the crocodile defeats other creatures; if it leaves the waters in which it prevails, other creatures defeat it.

நெடும்புனலுள் வெல்லு முதலை யடும்புனலி
னீங்கி னதனைப் பிற

A strong-wheeled tall chariot does not travel on the sea; a vessel that travels the sea does not run on land.

கடலோடா கால்வ னெடுந்தேர் கடலோடு
நாவாயு மோடா நிலத்து

If rulers consider every requirement without omission and act in a place fitted to them, they need no support other than fearlessness.

அஞ்சாமை யல்லாற் றுணைவேண்டா வெஞ்சாமை
யெண்ணி யிடத்தாற் செயின்

If the ruler with a great army enters the ground reached by the ruler with a small army, the greater army's confidence will perish.

சிறுபடையான் செல்லிடஞ் சேரி னுறுபடையா
னூக்க மழிந்து விடும்

Even if people lack the defensive strength and distinction of a fort, it is difficult to attack them on the land where they live.

சிறைநலனுஞ் சீரு மிலரெனினு மாந்த
ருறைநிலத்தோ டொட்ட லரிது

A jackal will kill the fearless-eyed elephant whose tusks have pierced spear-bearing fighters, if the elephant stands in ground where its feet sink.

காலாழ் களரி னரியடுங் கண்ணஞ்சா
வேலாண் முகத்த களிறு

Consider resources, instruments, time, the action itself, and place—all five—until uncertainty is cleared, and then act.

பொருள்கருவி காலம் வினையிட னொடைந்து
மிருடீர வெண்ணிச் செயல்.

Foremost among envoys is the one who knows the duty, considers the time, understands the fitting place, thinks through the wording, and then delivers the message.

கடனறிந்து காலங் கருதி யிடனறிந்
தெண்ணி யுரைப்பான் றலை.

Those who serve a hostile or changeable ruler should neither withdraw too far nor draw too close, but keep the measured distance of people warming themselves by a fire.

அகலா தணுகாது தீக்காய்வார் போல்க
இகல்வேந்தர்ச் சேர்ந்தொழுகு வார்.

Those who are not high, though they sit high, do not become high; those who are not low, though they sit low, do not become low.
