Poverty

To the one who has renounced the world, to the destitute, and to the dead left with no one to mourn them — the householder is friend and support.

துறந்தார்க்கும் துவ்வாதவர்க்கும் இறந்தார்க்கும்
இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் துணை

The verse promises that a household practising steady daily hospitality will not be ruined by want—an ethical assurance, not a financial guarantee or instruction to give beyond one's means.

வருவிருந்து வைகலு மோம்புவான் வாழ்க்கை
பருவந்து பாழ்படுத லின்று

The verse calls wealth that is never used for hospitality a form of poverty amid possession. It criticises wasted ethical opportunity, not people living in material poverty.

உடைமையு ளின்மை விருந்தோம்ப லோம்பா
மடமை மடவார்க ணுண்டு

The verse promises freedom from suffering poverty to one whose speech brings joy to everyone. That is a social-ethical assurance, not a financial guarantee or explanation of poverty.

துன்புறூஉம் துவ்வாமை இல்லாகும் யார்மாட்டும்
இன்புறூஉம் இன்சொ லவர்க்கு

The wise never look down on the poverty of one who stood firm in fairness and goodness.

கெடுவாக வையாது உலகம் நடுவாக
நன்றிக்கண் தங்கியான் தாழ்வு.

The worst poverty is sending a guest away hungry. The greatest strength is bearing with people who act out of ignorance.

இன்மையுள் இன்மை விருந்தொரால் வன்மையுள்
வன்மை மடவார்ப் பொறை

Fortune herself cannot bear the envious; she leaves them to her elder sister, Misfortune, and departs.

அவ்வித்து அழுக்காறு உடையானைச் செய்யவள்
தவ்வையைக் காட்டி விடும்.

Those who have mastered the senses and see clearly never covet another's goods, even when they say to themselves, 'I am in want.'

இலமென்று வெஃகுதல் செய்யார் புலம்வென்ற
புன்மையில் காட்சி யவர்.

Do not commit harmful deeds saying, ‘I have nothing’; if you do, the verse says you will again become one who has nothing.

இலன் என்று தீயவை செய்யற்க செய்யின்
இலனாகும் மற்றும் பெயர்த்து.

Those who clearly know their duty do not withdraw from helping even in a season when their own resources are limited.

இடனில் பருவத்து மொப்புரவிற் கொல்கார்
கடனறி காட்சி யவர்

A public-spirited person feels deprived only when circumstances leave them unable to perform the help their character calls for.

நயனுடையா னல்கூர்ந்தா னாதல் செயுநீர
செய்யா தமைகலா வாறு

Giving means placing what is needed in the hands of someone who has little. Other gifts may still be good, but they often carry an expectation of return.

வறியார்க்கொன் றீவதே யீகைமற் றெல்லாங்
குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து

Relieving the consuming hunger of those with nothing is the secure place where a wealthy person stores wealth for the self.

அற்றா ரழிபசி தீர்த்தலஃ தோருவன்
பெற்றான் பொருள்வைப் புழி

Nothing is more painful than death, says the verse; yet it uses the shocking claim that even death feels sweet when one is unable to give to a person in need.

சாதலி னின்னாத தில்லை யினிததூஉ
மீத லியையாக் கடை

Give to people in poverty, and live so that honour grows from that giving; the Kural says human life has no other gain apart from such renown.

ஈத லிசைபட வாழ்த லதுவல்ல
தூதிய மில்லை யுயிர்க்கு

Those without compassion have no share in that other world, just as those without material means lack this world's enjoyments.

அருளில்லார்க் கவ்வுலக மில்லை பொருளில்லார்க்
கிவ்வுலக மில்லாகி யாங்கு

Those who lack material wealth may flourish at another time; those without compassion are ruined, and becoming otherwise is difficult.

பொருளற்றார் பூப்பரொருகா லருளற்றா
ரற்றார்மற் றாத லரிது

The verse says the reason those who lack are many is that practitioners of austerity are few, while non-practitioners are many.

இலர்பல ராகிய காரண நோற்பார்
சிலர்பலர் நோலா தவர்

Those living in diseased bodies and in an abject life of poverty are said by interpreters of karma to be people who removed lives from bodies in a former birth.

உயிருடம்பி னீக்கியாரென்ப செயிருடம்பிற்
செல்லாத்தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர்

Those without means for enjoyment would indeed renounce, if destinies passed without inflicting the sufferings allotted to them.

துறப்பார்மற் றுப்புர வில்லா ருறற்பால
வூட்டா கழியு மெனின்

The learned once stood yearning before teachers as people without wealth stood before the wealthy; those who did not learn are called low in the verse's ancient hierarchy.

உடையார்முன் னில்லார்போ லேக்கற்றுங் கற்றார்
கடையரே கல்லா தவர்

The wealth held by the unlearned is more grievous, the verse says, than poverty resting with the learned.

நல்லார்கட் பட்ட வறுமையி னின்னாதே
கல்லார்கட் பட்ட திரு

Even after wealth is gone, continuing to honour an established bond is a grace the Kural attributes uniquely to kin.

பற்றற்ற கண்ணும் பழைமைபா ராட்டுதல்
சுற்றத்தார் கண்ணே யுள.

Forgetful negligence destroys a person's reputation, just as continual destitution destroys learning or practical intelligence.

பொச்சாப்புக் கொல்லும் புகழை யறிவினை
நிச்ச நிரப்புக்கொன் றாங்கு.

Under the sceptre of a king who does not uphold justice, possessing wealth is more painful than having none.

இன்மையி னின்னா துடைமை முறைசெய்யா
மன்னவன் கோற்கீழ்ப் படின்.

Those who hold firmly established resolve in hand as their resource do not cry in despair, ‘We have lost our prosperity.’

ஆக்க மிழந்தேமென் றல்லாவா ரூக்க
மொருவந்தங் கைத்துடை யார்.

Even when one sees the hunger of the mother who bore them, one must not do a deed the ethically wise condemn.

ஈன்றாள் பசிகாண்பா னாயினுஞ் செய்யற்க
சான்றோர் பழிக்கும் வினை.

The deep poverty of the worthy is superior to wealth obtained by embracing blame.

பழிமலைந் தெய்திய வாக்கத்திற் சான்றோர்
கழிநல் குரவே தலை.

People of every relation may despise those without wealth and defer to those who possess it—a diagnosis of biased social treatment, not a measure of human worth.

இல்லாரை யெல்லாரு மெள்ளுவர் செல்வரை
யெல்லாருஞ் செய்வர் சிறப்பு.

Among all forms of lack, lack of understanding is the deepest; the world does not reckon lack of other possessions as that same kind of want.

அறிவின்மை யின்மையு ளின்மை பிறிதின்மை
யின்மையா வையா துலகு.

For gamblers who gain one and lose a hundred, is there so much as a single road left by which they might reach what is good and live well?

ஒன்றெய்தி நூறிழக்குஞ் சூதர்க்கு முண்டாங்கொ
னன்றெய்தி வாழ்வதோ ராறு.

If the stake on the rolling dice is called without pause, both the wealth gathered and the revenue still coming in will leave and settle somewhere outside.

உருளாய மோவாது கூறிற் பொருளாயம்
போஒய்ப் புறமே படும்.

Gambling brings on many small humiliations a person never had before and destroys the standing he already had; for producing sheer destitution there is not one thing to match it.

சிறுமை பலசெய்து சீரழிக்குங் சூதின்
வறுமை தருவதொன் றில்.

The dice, the gaming hall, and the skill of their own hands — the men who were proud of all three and let go of none of them had once been men of substance, and became men with nothing.

கவறுங் கழகமுங் கையுந் தருக்கி
யிவறியா ரில்லாகி யார்.

Those who have been covered over by the Misfortune that goes here under the name of gambling will not fill their bellies in this life, and will be churned about in torment in the next.

அகடாரா ரல்ல லுழப்பர்சூ தென்னு
முகடியான் மூடப்பட் டார்.

Even where what they give has fallen away inside, an old line does not part from its own quality.

வழங்குவ துள்வீழ்ந்தக் கண்ணும் பழங்குடி
பண்பிற் றலைப்பிரித லின்று.

When wealth is at the full, bowing is what is required; when means have shrunk to little, what is required is height.

பெருக்கத்து வேண்டும் பணிதல் சிறிய
சுருக்கத்து வேண்டு முயர்வு.

Having nothing is no disgrace to a person, if the solidity called fullness of character is obtained — the commentary reading the first word as poverty and the solidity as strength.

இன்மை யொருவற் கிளிவன்று சால்பென்னுந்
திண்மை யுண்டாகப் பெறின்.
