When someone wrongs you out of arrogance, don't match them. Win by the sheer weight of your own restraint.

மிகுதியான் மிக்கவை செய்தாரைத் தாந்தம்
தகுதியான் வென்று விடல்

One who cuts off the pride that says ‘I’ and ‘mine’ will enter a realm higher even than that of the heavenly beings.

யானென தென்னுஞ் செருக்கறுப்பான் வானோர்க்
குயர்ந்த வுலகம் புகும்

கல்லா வொருவன் தகைமை தலைப்பெய்து
சொல்லாடச் சோர்வு படும்

The prosperity of rulers free from arrogance, wrath, and degrading lust has the nature of dignified greatness.

செருக்குஞ் சினமுஞ் சிறுமையு மில்லார்
பெருக்கம் பெருமித நீர்த்து

Never exalt yourself in admiration; never desire an action that will yield no good.

வியவற்க வெஞ்ஞான்றுந் தன்னை நயவற்க
நன்றி பயவா வினை

One who neither lives in accord with surrounding powers nor knows his own measure, but admires himself, quickly comes to ruin.

அமைந்தாங் கொழுகா னளவறியான் றன்னை
வியந்தான் விரைந்து கெடும்

When rulers become strong or overborne in their own delight, they should remember those previously ruined by negligence born of contempt or complacency.

இகழ்ச்சியிற் கெட்டாரை யுள்ளுக தாந்தம்
மகிழ்ச்சியின் மைந்துறும் போழ்து.

People of unwavering judgment do not think royal favour permits them to do what the ruler rejects.

கொளப்பட்டே மென்றெண்ணிக் கொள்ளாத செய்யார்
துளக்கற்ற காட்சி யவர்.

Presumptuous familiarity that treats long association as permission for conduct outside proper character brings ruin.

பழைய மெனக்கருதிப் பண்பல்ல செய்யுங்
கெழுதகைமை கேடு தரும்.

What is called shallow understanding? It is the conceit that says, “We possess keen understanding.”

வெண்மை யெனப்படுவ தியாதெனி னொண்மை
யுடையம்யா மென்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

Assuming the posture of mastery in what one has not learned causes doubt even about what one has learned thoroughly and truly masters.

கல்லாத மேற்கொண் டொழுகல் கசடற
வல்லதூஉ மையந் தரும்.

One who tries to show an unreceptive person is himself dismissed as unseeing; the unreceptive person counts only his own way of seeing as knowledge.

காணாதாற் காட்டுவான் றான்காணான் காணாதான்
கண்டானாந் தான்கண்டா வாறு.

The life of one who says that surpassing others through hostility is sweet stands close to error and complete ruin.

இகலின் மிகலினி தென்பவன் வாழ்க்கை
தவலுங் கெடலு நணித்து.

Those rulers who fail, when able, to break the pride of active enemies certainly will not remain alive even for the measure of a breath.

உயிர்ப்ப வுளரல்லர் மன்ற செயிர்ப்பவர்
செம்மல் சிதைக்கலா தார்.

If a ruler behaves without due regard for people great in capability, that conduct will bring through them suffering that does not depart.

பெரியாரைப் பேணா தொழுகிற் பெரியாராற்
பேரா விடும்பை தரும்.

பணியுமா மென்றும் பெருமை சிறுமை
யணியுமாந் தன்னை வியந்து.

Greatness is the absence of conceit; smallness is climbing onto conceit and riding it — and the commentary adds that the ride ends at the far edge of arrogance.

பெருமை பெருமித மின்மை சிறுமை
பெருமித மூர்ந்து விடல்.
