Purity of action

Keep the mind spotless — that alone is virtue. All the rest, the show and the talk, is mere noise.

மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன் ஆதல் அனைத்தறன்
ஆகுல நீர பிற

Water brings cleanliness to the body's exterior; inner purity comes through truthfulness.

புறந்தூய்மை நீரா னமையு மகந்தூய்மை
வாய்மையாற் காணப் படும்

What is called purity is the absence of desire; that state comes through seeking truth itself.

தூஉய்மை யென்ப தவாவின்மை மற்றது
வாஅய்மை வேண்ட வரும்

Purity of mind and purity of action—both, the verse says, come supported by purity in one’s associations.

மனந்தூய்மை செய்வினை தூய்மை யிரண்டு
மினந்தூய்மை தூவா வரும்

For the pure-minded, posterity is good; for those whose company is ethically sound, no undertaking fails to become good.

மனந்தூயார்க் கெச்சநன் றாகு மினந்தூயார்க்கு
கில்லைநன் றாகா வினை

Good support yields material gain; goodness in action yields every worthy benefit.

துணைநல மாக்கந் தரூஉம் வினைநலம்
வேண்டிய வெல்லாந் தரும்.

Always abandon any action that yields neither honour nor moral good.

என்று மொருவுதல் வேண்டும் புகழொடு
நன்றி பயவா வினை.

Those who intend to rise higher must shun every deed that dims their moral lustre.

ஓஒதல் வேண்டு மொளிமாழ்குஞ் செய்வினை
யாஅது மென்னு மவர்.

Even when hardship closes in, people of unwavering clarity do not perform a degrading deed.

இடுக்கட் படினு மிளிவந்த செய்யார்
நடுக்கற்ற காட்சி யவர்.

Do nothing that would make you later cry, ‘What have I done?’ If you have done such a thing once, it is good not to do its like again.

எற்றென் றிரங்குவ செய்யற்க செய்வானேல்
மற்றன்ன செய்யாமை நன்று.

Even when one sees the hunger of the mother who bore them, one must not do a deed the ethically wise condemn.

ஈன்றாள் பசிகாண்பா னாயினுஞ் செய்யற்க
சான்றோர் பழிக்கும் வினை.

The deep poverty of the worthy is superior to wealth obtained by embracing blame.

பழிமலைந் தெய்திய வாக்கத்திற் சான்றோர்
கழிநல் குரவே தலை.

To those who knowingly do what moral teaching condemns, those very deeds bring suffering even if they first succeed.

கடிந்த கடிந்தொரார் செய்தார்க் கவைதா
முடிந்தாலும் பீழை தரும்.

All wealth taken through others' tears will depart amid one's own tears; goods of the good kind may be lost first yet bear fruit later.

அழக்கொண்ட வெல்லா மழப்போ மிழப்பினும்
பிற்பயக்கு நற்பா லவை.

Trying to create security with wealth amassed through wrongful means is like pouring water into an unfired clay pot and expecting it to remain.

சலத்தாற் பொருள்செய்தே மார்த்தல் பசுமட்
கலத்துணீர் பெய்திரீஇ யற்று.

Purity from corrupting desire, support, resolve, and truthfulness belong to the envoy who speaks faithfully along the entrusted line.

தூய்மை துணைமை துணிவுடைமை யிம்மூன்றின்
வாய்மை வழியுரைப்பான் பண்பு.

Even when a fort possesses every excellence, it is effectively no fort for defenders who lack excellence in action.

எனைமாட்சித் தாகியக் கண்ணும் வினைமாட்சி
யில்லார்க ணில்ல தரண்.

Wealth acquired with knowledge of proper method and without wrongdoing yields both virtue and enjoyment.

அறனீனு மின்பமு மீனுந் திறனறிந்து
தீதின்றி வந்த பொருள்.

For those who have built abundant resources by honourable means, the other two ends—virtue and wholesome enjoyment—become attainable together.

ஒண்பொருள் காழ்ப்ப வியற்றியார்க் கெண்பொரு
ளேனை யிரண்டு மொருங்கு.

Cultivate the friendship of those free from blame; if already bound to people whose conduct does not accord with the right way, give even something they seek and leave that friendship.

மருவுக மாசற்றார் கேண்மையொன் றீத்து
மொருவுக வொப்பிலார் நட்பு.
