Birth and rebirth

Those who keep in ceaseless thought the glorious feet of the One who went upon the flower live imperishably in the highest realm.

மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார்
நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்

For those who reach the feet of the One who has neither desire nor aversion, the sufferings of birth never arise.

வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல

The two karmas joined to delusion—good and evil—do not attach to those who continually utter the Lord’s truth-filled praise.

இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன்
பொருள்சேர் புகழ்புரிந்தார் மாட்டு

Except for those who reach the feet—the raft—of the Divine who is an ocean of virtue, crossing the other seas is difficult.

அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது

Those who reach the Lord’s feet cross the vast sea of rebirth; those who do not reach them cannot cross.

பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்
இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்

Those who weigh this birth against release from it, and take up renunciation here and now, shine higher than all else on earth.

இருமை வகைதெரிந்து ஈண்டறம் பூண்டார்
பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு

Let no day pass without good done; such steady virtue becomes the stone that seals the road against the births to come.

வீழ்நாள் படாஅமை நன்றாற்றின் அஃதொருவன்
வாழ்நாள் வழியடைக்கும் கல்

Within its seven-birth rebirth framework, the verse says that children of character who give no just cause for reproach keep suffering from reaching the parent.

எழுபிறப்புந் தீயவை தீண்டா பழிபிறங்காப்
பண்புடை மக்கட் பெறின்

The good remember, through all the births of seven lives, the friendship of those who once wiped away their grief.

எழுமை எழுபிறப்பும் உள்ளுவர் தங்கண்
விழுமந் துடைத்தவர் நட்பு.

Draw in the five senses as a tortoise draws in its limbs, and that strength shelters you across all your lives.

ஒருமையுள் ஆமைபோல் ஐந்தடக்கல் ஆற்றின்
எழுமையும் ஏமாப் புடைத்து.

If one is born as a human being, be born with qualities that give rise to worthy renown; for those without such qualities, the Kural's severe rhetoric says animal birth would be better than human birth.

தோன்றிற் புகழொடு தோன்றுக அஃதிலார்
தோன்றலிற் றோன்றாமை நன்று

Entry into the dark world of suffering does not befall those whose hearts are filled with compassion.

அருள்சேர்ந்த நெஞ்சினார்க் கில்லை யிருள்சேர்ந்த
வின்னா வுலகம் புகல்

Those without compassion have no share in that other world, just as those without material means lack this world's enjoyments.

அருளில்லார்க் கவ்வுலக மில்லை பொருளில்லார்க்
கிவ்வுலக மில்லாகி யாங்கு

The continuance of embodied life rests upon not eating flesh; if one eats it, the hell that swallows that person will not open its mouth to release them.

உண்ணாமை யுள்ள துயிர்நிலை யூனுண்ண
வண்ணாத்தல் செய்யா தளறு

For those who practise theft, even the stability of embodied life will fail; for those who do not steal, the divine world will not fail.

கள்வார்க்குத் தள்ளு முயிர்நிலை கள்ளார்க்குத்
தள்ளாது புத்தே ளுலகு

Those living in diseased bodies and in an abject life of poverty are said by interpreters of karma to be people who removed lives from bodies in a former birth.

உயிருடம்பி னீக்கியாரென்ப செயிருடம்பிற்
செல்லாத்தீ வாழ்க்கை யவர்

Death is like falling asleep; birth after it is like waking from sleep.

உறங்குவது போலுஞ் சாக்காடுறங்கி
விழிப்பது போலும் பிறப்பு

Has no lasting home yet been found for the life that has stayed as a lodger within the body?

புக்கி லமைந்தின்று கொல்லோ வுடம்பினுட்
டுச்சி லிருந்த வுயிர்க்கு

For those undertaking to cut off rebirth, even the body is an excess; what need, then, is there for any further bonds?

மற்றுந் தொடர்ப்பா டெவன்கொல் பிறப்பறுக்க
லுற்றார்க் குடம்பு மிகை

Only when attachment is absent is rebirth cut off; otherwise, recurring impermanence is what will be seen.

பற்றற்ற கண்ணே பிறப்பறுக்கு மற்று
நிலையாமை காணப் படும்

Mistaking what lacks ultimate reality for reality is the delusion that, in this teaching, produces a joyless birth.

பொருளல் லவற்றைப் பொருளென் றுணரு
மருளானா மாணாப் பிறப்பு

For those whose delusion has left and whose vision of truth is stainless, the darkness of rebirth departs and the bliss of liberation arises.

இருணீங்கி யின்பம் பயக்கு மருணீங்கி
மாசறு காட்சி யவர்க்கு

Those who learn here and realize ultimate truth will attain the path by which they do not return here again.

கற்றீண்டு மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டார் தலைப்படுவர்
மற்றீண்டு வாரா நெறி

If the mind examines carefully, becomes firmly clear, and realizes what truly is, it need not think again of another birth.

ஓர்த்துள்ள முள்ள துணரி னொருதலையாப்
பேர்த்துள்ள வேண்டா பிறப்பு

The learned call desire the seed that, for every living being and at every time, unfailingly produces renewed birth.

அவாவென்ப வெல்லா வுயிர்க்குமெஞ் ஞான்றுந்
தவாஅப் பிறப்பீனும் வித்து

If one must desire, desire freedom from birth; that freedom comes when one desires freedom from desire itself.

வேண்டுங்கால் வேண்டும் பிறவாமை மற்றது
வேண்டாமை வேண்ட வரும்

The learning acquired in one birth becomes a protection for a person through seven births.

ஒருமைக்கட் டான்கற்ற கல்வி யொருவற்
கெழுமையு மேமாப் புடைத்து

Parimelazhagar says that goodness of mind leads to well-being in a future life, and that this good is further strengthened by sound association.

மனநலத்தி னாகு மறுமைமற் றஃது
மினநலத்தி னேமாப் புடைத்து

A ruler must carefully perform the actions that ethical authors praise as proper to rule; Parimelazhagar says that those who neglect them have no good even across seven births.

புகழ்ந்தவை போற்றிச் செயல்வேண்டுஞ் செய்யா
திகழ்ந்தார்க் கெழுமையு மில்.

Within one birth, a person can commit a deed that, in the verse's moral cosmology, sinks them in hell through seven births.

ஒருமைச் செயலாற்றும் பேதை யெழுமையுந்
தான்புக் கழுந்து மளறு.

In its ancient patriarchal and religious frame, the couplet says: a man who fears his wife lacks afterlife benefit, and even his mastery of action gains no celebrated distinction.

மனையாளை யஞ்சு மறுமை யிலாளன்
வினையாண்மை வீறெய்த லின்று.
