Renown

The greatness of sages whose word never fails is proclaimed to the world by the very mantras they have spoken.

நிறைமொழி மாந்தர் பெருமை நிலத்து
மறைமொழி காட்டி விடும்

She is truly worthy who keeps her own integrity unbroken, cares for the one she has married, guards the good name of them both, and never slips from that good character and conduct.

தற்காத்துத் தற்கொண்டாற் பேணித் தகைசான்ற
சொற்காத்துச் சோர்விலாள் பெண்

Those who have no partner cherishing the home's good name cannot walk proud and lion-like before those who would belittle them.

புகழ்புரிந்த இல்லிலோர்க் கில்லை இகழ்வார்முன்
ஏறுபோல் பீடு நடை

A mother rejoices more on hearing learned people call her son worthy than she did at his birth; the verse prizes cultivated character beyond arrival alone.

ஈன்ற பொழுதிற் பெரிதுவக்குந் தன்மகனைச்
சான்றோ னெனக்கேட்ட தாய்

In its father-son frame, the child's finest return is to live with such understanding and conduct that people wonder what merit the parent earned to receive such a child. This is praise, not a debt children must repay.

மகன்றந்தைக் காற்று முதவி யிவன்றந்தை
யென்னோற்றான் கொல்லெனுஞ் சொல்

Striking back buys you a single day's satisfaction. Bearing the wrong earns you a name that outlasts the world.

ஒறுத்தார்க்கு ஒருநாளை இன்பம் பொறுத்தார்க்குப்
பொன்றுந் துணையும் புகழ்

Even a man who does no good and commits wrongs is well spoken of, sweetly, if people can at least say, 'He does not backbite.'

அறங்கூறான் அல்ல செயினும் ஒருவன்
புறங்கூறான் என்றல் இனிது.

Pointless, graceless words spoken among many serve no good and strip the speaker of his own good name.

நயன்சாரா நன்மையின் நீக்கும் பயன்சாரா
பண்பில் சொல் பல்லார் அகத்து.

Give to people in poverty, and live so that honour grows from that giving; the Kural says human life has no other gain apart from such renown.

ஈத லிசைபட வாழ்த லதுவல்ல
தூதிய மில்லை யுயிர்க்கு

Whatever people say in praise comes to rest on those who give a person in poverty the one thing requested.

உரைப்பா ருரைப்பவை யெல்லா மிரப்பார்க்கொன்
றீவார்மே னிற்கும் புகழ்

In this world, nothing endures without passing away except exalted renown that has no equal.

ஒன்றா வுலகத் துயர்ந்த புகழல்லாற்
பொன்றாது நிற்பதொன் றில்

If a person creates enduring renown that reaches the earth's bounds, the Kural poetically says the celestial world will honour that person rather than the sages already there.

நிலவரை நீள்புக ழாற்றிற் புலவரைப்
போற்றாது புத்தே ளுலகு

Material loss that becomes gain for the enduring ‘body’ of renown, and bodily death through which that renown remains present, are difficult achievements except for people of rare discernment.

நத்தம்போற் கேடு முளதாகுஞ் சாக்காடும்
வித்தகர்க் கல்லா லரிது

If one is born as a human being, be born with qualities that give rise to worthy renown; for those without such qualities, the Kural's severe rhetoric says animal birth would be better than human birth.

தோன்றிற் புகழொடு தோன்றுக அஃதிலார்
தோன்றலிற் றோன்றாமை நன்று

Those who do not live in a way that earns worthy praise do not examine themselves; why, then, do they resent the people who scorn them?

புகழ்பட வாழாதார் தந்நோவார் தம்மை
யிகழ்வாரை நோவ தெவன்

If people fail to gain the remainder called renown, the Kural says the good will call that itself a reproach belonging to all people of the world.

வசையென்ப வையத்தார்க் கெல்லா மிசையென்னு
மெச்சம் பெறாஅ விடின்

The Kural poetically says that the land bearing a body without renown will see its blameless, abundant yield diminish.

வசையிலா வண்பயன் குன்று மிசையிலா
யாக்கை பொறுத்த நிலம்

Those who live so that reproach is absent are the ones who truly live; those who live so that renown is absent are, in the Kural's severe metaphor, people who do not live.

வசையொழிய வாழ்வாரே வாழ்வார் இசையொழிய
வாழ்வாரே வாழா தவர்

One who lives without falsehood in the heart lives in the hearts of people throughout the world.

உள்ளத்தாற் பொய்யா தொழுகி னுலகத்தா
ருள்ளத்து ளெல்லா முளன்

There is no renown like freedom from falsehood; without bodily mortification, it brings the fruit of every virtue, says the verse.

பொய்யாமை யன்ன புகழில்லை யெய்யாமை
யெல்லா வறமுந் தரும்

People's ordinary perception arises through their mind; the description by which they are known arises through their association.

மனத்தானா மாந்தர்க் குணர்ச்சி யினத்தானா
மின்னா னெனப்படுஞ்சொல்

Forgetful negligence destroys a person's reputation, just as continual destitution destroys learning or practical intelligence.

பொச்சாப்புக் கொல்லும் புகழை யறிவினை
நிச்ச நிரப்புக்கொன் றாங்கு.

Those who live in habitual forgetful negligence gain no lasting renown; this is the settled conclusion of learned people of every kind throughout the world.

பொச்சாப்பார்க் கில்லை புகழ்மை யதுவுலகத்
தெப்பா னூலோர்க்குந் துணிவு.

Just rule is what makes a ruler's fame endure; without it, royal splendour cannot last.

மன்னர்க்கு மன்னுதல் செங்கோன்மை யஃதின்றேன்
மன்னாவா மன்னர்க் கொளி.

The ruler burdened by the bitter saying, ‘Our king is cruel,’ will have his life shortened and will quickly lose his prosperity.

இறைகடிய னென்றுரைக்கு மின்னாச்சொல் வேந்த
னுறைகடுகி யொல்லைக் கெடும்.

The firmness in action of accomplished ministers, once it finds established acceptance with the ruler, will be esteemed throughout the realm.

வீறெய்தி மாண்டார் வினைத்திட்பம் வேந்தன்க
னூறெய்தி யுள்ளப் படும்.

Even without offensive courage or defensive endurance, an army may gain prestige through its imposing appearance.

அடற்றகையு மாற்றலு மில்லெனினுந் தானை
படைத்தகையாற் பாடு பெறும்.

For warriors who seek fame that circles the world and do not desire life, fastening the heroic anklet possesses fitting beauty.

சுழலு மிசைவேண்டி வேண்டா வுயிரார்
கழல்யாப்புக் காரிகை நீர்த்து.

The world esteems those who do not discard the friendship of people whose close bond has come down through time without decay.

கெடாஅ வழிவந்த கேண்மையார் கேண்மை
விடாஅர் விழையு முலகு.

Even those who did not desire them will seek people who do not depart from their own good character toward old friends.

விழையார் விழையப் படுப பழையார்கட்
பண்பிற் றலைப்பிரியா தார்.

If one removes from the mind the grievous disease called hostility, that removal gives an unfailing, imperishable radiance of good name.

இகலென்னு மெவ்வநோய்நீக்கிற் றவலில்லாத்
தாவில் விளக்கந் தரும்.

Renown will never attach to one who refuses the easy gain available in opposing an unlearned and angry adversary.

கல்லான் வெகுளுஞ் சிறுபொரு ளெஞ்ஞான்று
மொல்லானை ஒல்லா தொளி.

Those fit to spread their own good name, earned through knowledge and conduct, do not seek the embrace of women whom the source describes as publicly marketing their disparaged bodily allure to every payer.

தந்நல பாரிப்பார் தோயார் தகைசெருக்கிப்
புன்னலம் பாரிப்பார் தோள்.

Clothing, wealth, food, renown and learning — all five of these will fail to reach him, if he takes up gambling as his amusement.

உடைசெல்வ மூணொளி கல்வியென் றைந்து
மடையாவா மாயங் கொளின்.

Those who want fame with honour standing alongside it will certainly not do, even for fame, the things that are not fame.

சீரினுஞ் சீரல்ல செய்யாரே சீரொடு
பேராண்மை வேண்டு பவர்

It brings no fame here, and it does not carry you across to the world of the gods — so what, then, does it do: this standing behind those who hold you in contempt?

புகழின்றாற் புத்தேணாட் டுய்யாதா லென்மற்
றிகழ்வார்பின் சென்று நிலை.

The world bows to and praises the light of those possessed of honour who do not live on when disgrace comes — and the commentary names that light as the form of their fame, and adds that the world does so at all times.

இளிவரின் வாழாத மான முடையா
ரொளிதொழு தேத்து முலகு.

The world keeps celebrating the character of those who, loving justice and virtue, are of use to others and to themselves — the commentary supplying both the two loves and the two directions of the use.

நயனொடு நன்றி புரிந்த பயனுடையார்
பண்புபா ராட்டு முலகு.
