Renunciation

Weighing every good thing, the moral codes all reach the same verdict: nothing stands higher than the greatness of those who have renounced and held firm to their discipline.

ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து
வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு

Those who weigh this birth against release from it, and take up renunciation here and now, shine higher than all else on earth.

இருமை வகைதெரிந்து ஈண்டறம் பூண்டார்
பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு

If a person already runs domestic life along the path of virtue, what more is there to gain by going off to any other path?

அறத்தாற்றின் இல்வாழ்க்கை ஆற்றின் புறத்தாற்றில்
போஒய்ப் பெறுவது எவன்

The one who lives the household life in its proper, natural way stands foremost among all who strive on the paths toward release.

இயல்பினான் இல்வாழ்க்கை வாழ்பவன் என்பான்
முயல்வாருள் எல்லாம் தலை

Domestic life is what the texts single out and call virtue; renunciation too is good in the same way — so long as nothing in it draws blame.

அறனெனப் பட்டதே இல்வாழ்க்கை அஃதும்
பிறன்பழிப்ப தில்லாயின் நன்று

Those who can absorb the cruel words of people who've lost all decency are as pure as those who renounced the world — and they never left ordinary life.

துறந்தாரின் தூய்மை உடையர் இறந்தார்வாய்
இன்னாச்சொல் நோற்கிற் பவர்

Reckless coveting breeds ruin; the proud wealth of wanting nothing breeds victory over all.

இறலீனும் எண்ணாது வெஃகின் விறலீனும்
வேண்டாமை என்னும் செருக்கு.

The concealed false conduct of those who say, ‘We are free of attachment,’ will later bring many troubles and repeated regret: ‘What have we done?’

பற்றற்றே மென்பார் படிற்றொழுக்க மெற்றெற்றென்
றேதம் பலவுந் தரும்

None is more hard-hearted than those who have not renounced attachment inwardly, yet live by deceiving others as though they had renounced.

நெஞ்சிற் றுறவார் துறந்தார்போல் வஞ்சித்து
வாழ்வாரின் வண்கணா ரில்

One who wants to be respected as sincerely seeking liberation must guard the mind from intending to take anything through deceit.

எள்ளாமை வேண்டுவா னென்பா னெனைத்தொன்றுங்
கள்ளாமை காக்கதன் னெஞ்சு

In the verse's moral-spiritual comparison, those dominated by excessive anger are ‘like the dead,’ while those who renounce anger stand beside true renunciants.

இறந்தா ரிறந்தா ரனையர் சினத்தைத்
துறந்தார் துறந்தார் துணை

Among all who renounced household life from fear of continued birth, foremost is the one who fears the wrong of killing and keeps non-killing in mind.

நிலையஞ்சி நீத்தாரு ளெல்லாங் கொலையஞ்சிக்
கொல்லாமை சூழ்வான் றலை.

Regarding what cannot last as though it were lasting is the lowest form of understanding for a renunciant.

நில்லாத வற்றை நிலையின வென்றுணரும்
புல்லறி வாண்மை கடை

From each thing a person has left behind, that person is free from the suffering arising from that very thing.

யாதனின் யாதனி னீங்கியா னோத
லதனி னதனி னிலன்

If you desire the many benefits that naturally arise here after renunciation, renounce while the opportunity exists.

வேண்டினுண் டாகத் துறக்க துறந்தபி
னீண்டியற் பால பல

The objects of the five senses must be subdued; everything acquired for enjoying them must be relinquished together.

அடல்வேண்டு மைந்தன் புலத்தை விடல்வேண்டும்
வேண்டிய வெல்லா மொருங்கு

Possessing nothing is natural to ascetic discipline; possessing even one thing returns and becomes delusion again.

இயல்பாகு நோன்பிற்கொன் றின்மை யுடைமை
மயலாகு மற்றும் பெயர்த்து

For those undertaking to cut off rebirth, even the body is an excess; what need, then, is there for any further bonds?

மற்றுந் தொடர்ப்பா டெவன்கொல் பிறப்பறுக்க
லுற்றார்க் குடம்பு மிகை

One who cuts off the pride that says ‘I’ and ‘mine’ will enter a realm higher even than that of the heavenly beings.

யானென தென்னுஞ் செருக்கறுப்பான் வானோர்க்
குயர்ந்த வுலகம் புகும்

Sufferings cling without letting go to those who cling without letting go to attachment.

பற்றி விடாஅ விடும்பைகள் பற்றினைப்
பற்றி விடாஅ தவர்க்கு

Those who have completely renounced have reached the goal; all others, bewildered, are caught in the net.

தலைப்பட்டார் தீரத் துறந்தார் மயங்கி
வலைப்பட்டார் மற்றை யவர்

Only when attachment is absent is rebirth cut off; otherwise, recurring impermanence is what will be seen.

பற்றற்ற கண்ணே பிறப்பறுக்கு மற்று
நிலையாமை காணப் படும்

Hold to the path taught by the One without attachment; hold to that support so that every other attachment may be released.

பற்றுக பற்றற்றான் பற்றினை யப்பற்றைப்
பற்றுக பற்று விடற்கு

If one realizes the true support and lives so that attachments cease, the sufferings that would cling can no longer destroy that realization and conduct or cling afterward.

சார்புணர்ந்து சார்புகெட வொழுகின் மற்றழித்துச்
சார்தரா சார்தரு நோய்

If one must desire, desire freedom from birth; that freedom comes when one desires freedom from desire itself.

வேண்டுங்கால் வேண்டும் பிறவாமை மற்றது
வேண்டாமை வேண்ட வரும்

Those called free are the ones free from desire; others who have removed other causes have not yet removed this one.

அற்றவ ரென்பா ரவாவற்றார் மற்றையா
ரற்றாக வற்ற திலர்

If one can cut desire off completely, the unfailing deed that leads to liberation will come in the way one rightly seeks.

அவாவினை யாற்ற வறுப்பிற் றவாவினை
தான்வேண்டு மாற்றான் வரும்

If the deepest suffering called desire comes to an end, uninterrupted joy is possible even here in embodied life.

இன்ப மிடையறா தீண்டு மவாவென்னுந்
துன்பத்துட் டுன்பங் கெடின்

Those without means for enjoyment would indeed renounce, if destinies passed without inflicting the sufferings allotted to them.
