The strong-minded never slacken their conduct, because they know the disgrace that a lapse brings.

Confidence belongs with one who steadily possesses these four: loyal affection toward the ruler, understanding of what benefits him, unwavering resolve in carrying it out, and freedom from greed when resources come into hand.

அன்பறிவு தேற்ற மவாவின்மை யிந்நான்கு
நன்குடையான் கட்டே தெளிவு.

It becomes easier for a ruler to attain the intended object if the mind can continue to hold that very intention.

உள்ளிய தெய்த லெளிதுமன் மற்றுந்தா
னுள்ளிய துள்ளப் பெறின்.

What chiefly makes people worthy of being called possessors is resolve. If they lack that, can they truly command anything else they possess?

உடைய ரெனப்படுவ தூக்கமஃ தில்லா
ருடைய துடையரோ மற்று.

Possession of inward resolve is the possession that endures; material possession does not remain, but departs.

உள்ள முடைமை யுடைமை பொருளுடைமை
நில்லாது நீங்கி விடும்.

Those who hold firmly established resolve in hand as their resource do not cry in despair, ‘We have lost our prosperity.’

ஆக்க மிழந்தேமென் றல்லாவா ரூக்க
மொருவந்தங் கைத்துடை யார்.

Prosperity will ask the way and go to the person whose resolve does not waver.

ஆக்க மதர்வினாய்ச் செல்லு மசைவிலா
வூக்க முடையா னுழை.

As the water flower's stem reaches according to the depth of standing water, people's elevation corresponds to the measure of their inward resolve.

வெள்ளத் தனைய மலர்நீட்ட மாந்தர்த
முள்ளத் தனைய துயர்வு.

Let every intention aim at elevation; even if fate pushes the result away, that elevated intention is of a nature not to fall.

உள்ளுவ தெல்லா முயர்வுள்ளன் மற்றது
தள்ளினுந் தள்ளாமை நீர்த்து.

People of resolve do not shrink when their intended rise is damaged, as a great elephant maintains its bearing even when wounded by a deeply piercing arrow.

சிதைவிடத் தொல்கா ருரவோர் புதையம்பிற்
பட்டுப்பா டூன்றுங் களிறு.

Rulers without resolve do not attain, in this world, the proud self-regard of being called generous.

உள்ள மிலாதவ ரெய்தா ருலகத்து
வள்ளிய ரென்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

Though the elephant is huge and armed with sharp tusks, it fears when a tiger attacks.

பரியது கூர்ங்கோட்ட தாயினும் யானை
வெரூஉம் புலிதாக் குறின்.

Abundant resolve is a person's firmness; those without it are trees, the classical claim says severely, differing from literal trees only in human form.

உரமொருவற் குள்ள வெறுக்கையஃ தில்லார்
மரமக்க ளாதலே வேறு.

Do not lose heart by saying, ‘This is too difficult.’ Sustained effort creates in us the capacity and distinction needed to complete it.

அருமை யுடைத்தென் றசாவாமை வேண்டும்
பெருமை முயற்சி தரும்.

Those who act without agitation or delay, adapting and persisting, make even the fate that obstructs their result turn its back.

ஊழையு முப்பக்கங் காண்ப ருலைவின்றித்
தாழா துஞற்று பவர்

Those who do not surrender to grief when adversity interrupts their work put adversity itself under strain until its hold weakens.

இடும்பைக் கிடும்பை படுப்ப ரிடும்பைக்
கிடும்பை படாஅ தவர்.

Even when adversities arrive one upon another, they themselves are worn down against a person whose inner purpose does not disintegrate.

அடுக்கி வரினு மழிவிலா னுற்ற
விடுக்க ணிடுக்கட் படும்.

Ministerial excellence requires five joined strengths: firmness in action, protection of the people, learned discernment, energetic effort, and the practical competence already described.

வன்கண் குடிகாத்தல் கற்றறித லாள்வினையோ
டைந்துடன் மாண்ட தமைச்சு.

What is called firmness in action is the firmness of the actor's mind; every other strength is secondary.

வினைத்திட்ப மென்ப தொருவன் மனத்திட்ப
மற்றைய வெல்லாம் பிற.

Planners may attain what they intended in the manner intended, if they remain firm in the action that is the means to it.

எண்ணிய வெண்ணியாங் கெய்துப வெண்ணியார்
திண்ணிய ராகப் பெறின்.

The hardiness to stand without shrinking from injury when the force is depleted and the ruler is in battlefield distress is rarely found except in an army of long institutional continuity.

உலைவிடத் தூறஞ்சா வன்கண் டொலைவிடத்துத்
தொல்படைக் கல்லா லரிது.

That alone is a true army which is not destroyed in battle, cannot be undermined or bought away by the enemy, and possesses hardiness carried through long continuity.

அழிவின் றறைபோகா தாகி வழிவந்த
வன்க ணதுவே படை

An army will prevail if it is free from three distinct deficits: shrinkage in numbers, persistent inward resentment, and poverty of supplies.

சிறுமையுஞ் செல்லாத் துனியும் வறுமையு
மில்லாயின் வெல்லும் படை.

If one asks where friendship sits enthroned, it is in the state of not wavering inwardly and sustaining a friend, wherever one is genuinely able.

நட்பிற்கு வீற்றிருக்கை யாதெனிற் கொட்பின்றி
யொல்லும்வா யூன்று நிலை.

Do not contemplate actions that shrink your resolve; do not form friendship with those who sever their support when suffering comes.

உள்ளற்க வுள்ளஞ் சிறுகுவ கொள்ளற்க
வல்லற்க ணாற்றறுப்பார் நட்பு.

Those who stay within friendship’s proper bounds will not abandon the bond of a friend who has stood with them from of old, even when loss comes through that friend.

எல்லைக்க ணின்றார் துறவார் தொலைவிடத்துந்
தொல்லைக்க ணின்றார் தொடர்பு.

Those without a steadfast heart seek the shoulders of women who inwardly desire other things and bodily embrace the people who provide them.

நிறைநெஞ்ச மில்லவர் தோய்வர் பிறநெஞ்சிற்
பேணிப் புணர்பவர் தோள்.

If a want of fibre shows in one held to be of good standing, the world comes to doubt what it believed of him.

நலத்தின்க ணாரின்மை தோன்றி னவனைக்
குலத்தின்க ணையப் படும்.

For a person, the radiance is an abundance in the mind — the surplus that intends to do what others find too hard; and for a person, the disgrace is the saying: we shall live, having left that behind.

ஒளியொருவற் குள்ள வெறுக்கை யிளியொருவற்
கஃதிறந்து வாழ்து மெனல்.

Those spoken of as the shore to the sea that is noble excellence do not shift, though an aeon shift — and the commentary adds that even the ordinary sea fails to stay within its shore as time turns.

ஊழி பெயரினுந் தாம்பெயரார் சான்றாண்மைக்
காழி யெனப்படு வார்.
