Sloth

The destiny that brings gain gives rise to tireless effort; the destiny that brings loss gives rise to idleness.

ஆகூழாற் றோன்று மசைவின்மை கைப்பொருள்
போகூழாற் றோன்று மடி

The wealth of one who clings to it and leaves undone the things that ought to be done will perish without remaining capable of survival.

செயற்பால செய்யா திவறியான் செல்வ
முயற்பால தன்றிக் கெடும்

Ruin comes both from doing what ought not to be done and from failing to do what ought to be done.

செய்தக்க வல்ல செயக்கெடுஞ் செய்தக்க
செய்யாமை யானுங் கெடும்.

The unfailing lamp called a household's standing fades and is extinguished when the stain called sloth spreads over it.

குடியென்னும் குன்றா விளக்கம் மடியென்னும்
மாசூர மாய்ந்து கெடும்.

Those who want their house to remain a worthy house must recognise sloth for what it is and live with deliberate effort.

மடியை மடியா ஒழுகல் குடியைக்
குடியாக வேண்டுபவர்.

The house of the foolish person who holds destructive sloth within will decline even before that person does.

மடிமடிக் கொண்டொழுகும் பேதை பிறந்த
குடிமடியுந் தன்னினு முந்து.

For those sunk in sloth and without worthy effort, the house declines and faults multiply.

குடிமடிந்து குற்றம் பெருகு மடிமடிந்து
மாண்ட வுஞற்றில வர்க்கு.

Delay, forgetfulness, sloth, and sleep are four desired boats for people disposed toward ruin.

They say the goddess of misfortune dwells with entrenched sloth, while the lotus goddess of prosperity takes her stand at the feet of one free from sloth. These are literary personifications, not judgements about gender, body, colour, birth, poverty, or human worth.

மடியுளாண் மாமுகடி யென்ப மடியிலான்
றாளுளா டாமரையி னாள்

Deliberation ends when firm judgement is reached; once reached, letting that decision remain in delay is wrong.

சூழ்ச்சி முடிவுதுணி வெய்த லத்துணிவு
தாழ்ச்சியுட் டங்குத றீது.

He neither acts even when soundly instructed nor discerns for himself; until that life departs, the verse harshly calls it one continuing affliction.

ஏவவுஞ் செய்கலான் றான்றேறா னவ்வுயிர்
போஒ மளவுமோர் நோய்.
