Tyranny

A ruler who harasses subjects for wealth and acts unjustly is crueller than those who have made killing their trade.

கொலைமேற் கொண்டாரிற் கொடிதே யலைமேற்கொண்
டல்லவை செய்தொழுகும் வேந்து.

A ruler who asks subjects for property while standing behind punitive power resembles a highway robber who raises a spear and says, ‘Give.’

வேலொடு நின்றா னிடுவென் றதுபோலுங்
கோலொடு நின்றா னிரவு.

The country of a king who does not investigate wrongs and apply justice every day declines day after day.

நாடொறு நாடி முறைசெய்ய மன்னவ
னாடொறு நாடு கெடும்.

A ruler who bends justice and acts without considering consequences loses together both accumulated wealth and the people who make future prosperity possible.

கூழுங் குடியு மொருங்கிழக்குங் கோல்கோடிச்
சூழாது செய்ய மரசு.

The tears shed by subjects whose suffering has passed endurance become the very force that wears away the oppressive ruler's wealth.

அல்லற்பட் டாற்றா தழுதகண் ணீரன்றே
செல்வத்தைத் தேய்க்கும் படை.

Just rule is what makes a ruler's fame endure; without it, royal splendour cannot last.

மன்னர்க்கு மன்னுதல் செங்கோன்மை யஃதின்றேன்
மன்னாவா மன்னர்க் கொளி.

As the absence of rain afflicts living beings across the world, the absence of a ruler's compassionate protection afflicts those who live under his rule.

துளியின்மை ஞாலத்திற் கெற்றற்றே வேந்த
னளியின்மை வாழு முயிர்க்கு.

Under the sceptre of a king who does not uphold justice, possessing wealth is more painful than having none.

ஆபயன் குன்று மறுதொழிலோர் நூன்மறப்பர்
காவலன் காவா னெனின்.

If a ruler follows a cruel sceptre through deeds that make the people tremble, he will certainly perish quickly.

வெருவந்த செய்தொழுகும் வெங்கோல னாயி
னொருவந்த மொல்லைக் கெடும்.

The ruler burdened by the bitter saying, ‘Our king is cruel,’ will have his life shortened and will quickly lose his prosperity.

இறைகடிய னென்றுரைக்கு மின்னாச்சொல் வேந்த
னுறைகடுகி யொல்லைக் கெடும்.

The great wealth of one who is hard to approach and unpleasant in countenance has the fault of treasure seen under a demon's guard.

அருஞ்செவ்வி யின்னா முகத்தான் பெருஞ்செல்வம்
பேஎய்கண் டன்ன துடைத்து.

If a ruler is harsh in speech and without compassionate regard, his great prosperity will fail there and then, without endurance.

கடுஞ்சொல்லன் கண்ணில னாயி னெடுஞ்செல்வ
நீடின்றி யாங்கே கெடும்.

Harsh speech and punishment exceeding the offence are a file that wears away the ruler's iron strength for conquering enemies.

கடுமொழியுங் கையிகந்த தண்டமும் வேந்த
னடுமுரண் டேய்க்கு மரம்.

If a king fails to deliberate with his council and then gives himself to anger and rages when the plan fails, his prosperity will shrink.

இனத்தாற்றி யெண்ணாத வேந்தன் சினத்தாற்றிச்
சீறிற் சிறுகுந் திரு.

There is no burden upon the earth heavier than a tyrant binding the unlearned to himself as his faction and counsel.

கல்லார்ப் பிணிக்குங் கடுங்கோ லதுவல்ல
தில்லை நிலக்குப் பொறை.
