If the world cannot run without water, then right conduct too cannot go on without rain.

நீரின்று அமையாது உலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும்
வான்இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு

The anger of those who stand atop the hill of virtue cannot be withstood even for a moment, brief as it is.

குணமென்னும் குன்றேறி நின்றார் வெகுளி
கணமேயுங் காத்த லரிது

Those rightly called Anthanar are people of virtue, for they live bearing gracious compassion toward every living being.

Virtue can live in a warm reception followed by sincere kind speech. Welcome may be communicated through words and actions when facial expression differs.

When one seeks words that genuinely benefit others and speaks them kindly, wrongs diminish and virtue grows. Necessary firmness and urgent truth can still be ethical.

அல்லவை தேய அறம்பெருகும் நல்லவை
நாடி இனிய சொலின்

Speech that benefits others and never leaves kindness produces right social accord now and virtue hereafter. The next-life result belongs to the verse's religious framework.

நயன்ஈன்று நன்றி பயக்கும் பயன்ஈன்று
பண்பின் தலைப்பிரியாச் சொல்

Those who have destroyed every other good may still find a way back; but for the one who destroys a kindness done to them, there is none.

There is one virtue called fairness — holding to the right equally toward enemy, stranger, and friend; that alone, says Valluvar, is the true good.

He alone is called a householder living by virtue who does not desire the womanhood of another man's wife.

Those hardened by evil deeds do not fear the moral intoxication called wrongdoing; people of worth fear precisely that loss of moral alarm.

தீவினையார் அஞ்சார் விழுமியார் அஞ்சுவர்
தீவினை என்னும் செருக்கு.

Do not plot another person's ruin, even in a careless moment; if you do, the verse says virtue itself will plot the plotter's ruin.

மறந்தும் பிறன்கேடு சூழற்க சூழின்
அறம் சூழும் சூழ்ந்தவன் கேடு.

Know that a person is hard to bring to ruin if that person does not turn aside into a crooked course and do evil toward others.

அருங்கேடன் என்பது அறிக மருங்கோடித்
தீவினை செய்யான் எனின்.

Good people say that those who abandon compassion and live by doing what should not be done have forgotten the suffering caused when they formerly departed from the true good.

பொருணீங்கிப் பொச்சாந்தா ரென்ப ரருணீங்கி
யல்லவை செய்தொழுகு வார்

If one examines the virtue performed by a person without compassion, it resembles an undiscerning person's perception of ultimate reality.

தெருளாதான் மெய்ப்பொருள் கண்டாற்றா றேரி
னருளாதான் செய்யு மறம்

As virtue abides in the heart of those who understand measured discernment, concealment abides in the heart of those practiced in theft.

அளவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சத் தறம்போல நிற்குங்
களவறிந்தார் நெஞ்சிற் கரவு

If one can practise truthfulness—truthfulness without fail—it is good even if other virtues remain undone, says the verse.

பொய்யாமை பொய்யாமை யாற்றி னறம்பிற
செய்யாமை செய்யாமை நன்று

True government does not depart from virtue, removes what is unjust, and possesses honour that does not fail in courage.

நட்டார் குறைமுடியார் நன்றாற்றார் நன்னுதலாட்

Virtuous action, fitting wealth-producing action, and every other pleasure-producing action are absent in those who live by carrying out their wife's commands.

For gamblers who gain one and lose a hundred, is there so much as a single road left by which they might reach what is good and live well?

ஒன்றெய்தி நூறிழக்குஞ் சூதர்க்கு முண்டாங்கொ
னன்றெய்தி வாழ்வதோ ராறு.

For the person who discerns what is fitting and takes noble excellence upon themselves, all good things are owed — so those who know the texts say; and the commentator adds that they will simply be there, as that person's nature.

கடனென்ப நல்லவை யெல்லாங் கடனறிந்து
சான்றாண்மை மேற்கொள் பவர்க்கு.

The good of the worthy is the good that comes of character; other good is not included in any good at all — and the commentary specifies that the other kind is the good that comes of one's bodily parts.

குணநலஞ் சான்றோர் நலனே பிறநல
மெந்நலத் துள்ளதூஉ மன்று.

Should the worthy fall short in their worth, the wide earth itself will not bear its burden — the commentary defining the worthy as those filled with many qualities.

சான்றவர் சான்றாண்மை குன்றி னிருநிலந்தான்
தாங்காது மன்னோ பொறை.

Because it rests in those who have the quality, the way of the world goes on; were it not to rest there, it would sink into the earth and be lost.

பண்புடையார்ப் பட்டுண் டுலக மதுவின்றேன்
மண்புக்கு மாய்வது மன்.
