கொள்கை பிழைப்பின் குலம் சுடும்= ஒருவனுக்கு ஒழுக்கம் பிழைக்குமாயின் அப்பிழைப்பு, அவன் குடிப்பிறப்பு ஒன்றனையும் கெடுக்கும்; நாணின்மை நின்றக் கடை நலம் சுடும்= ஒருவன்மாட்டு நாணின்மை நின்றவழி, அந்நிலை அவன் நலம் யாவற்றையும் கெடுக்கும். (உரைவிளக்கம்: நிற்றல்: ஒருபொழுதும் நீங்காமை. 'நலம்' சாதி யொருமையாகலின், பிறப்பு, கல்வி, குணம், செயல், இனம் என்று இவற்றான் வந்தன எல்லாம் கொள்ளப்படும். ஒழுக்கஅழிவினும், நாணழிவு இறப்பத் தீது என்பதாம்.)

If a man's ஒழுக்கம் fails, Parimelazhagar says, that lapse ruins one thing of his and no more: the standing he has from the household he was born into. But where the absence of நாண் has taken up its position in him, that condition ruins every good he has. The commentary makes the arithmetic explicit — ஒன்றனையும் for the first, யாவற்றையும் for the second — and the difference between those two words is what it wants read. His உரைவிளக்கம় then adds three things the couplet leaves implicit. Standing means ஒருபொழுதும் நீங்காமை, not departing for a single moment. நலம் is a சாதி ஒருமை, a generic singular, so what it covers is birth, learning, character, conduct, the company a man keeps, and whatever comes of those. And the ranking is his own, stated outright: ஒழுக்கஅழிவினும், நாணழிவு இறப்பத் தீது — worse than the destruction of conduct is the destruction of நாண், exceedingly worse.
