Chapter 118 / 133 · Kurals 1171–1180

Eyes Worn Out with Grief

About this chapter

On eyes that brought the trouble on and now suffer for it, addressed as though they could answer.

A chapter in which a woman turns on her own eyes and holds them answerable. They are addressed throughout as a separate party, with the honorific pronoun a person would be given, and they are never once allowed to reply.

Kural 1171 opens with the charge. This grief that will not cool — she came to know it only because they showed him to her, so what are they weeping for now? In 1172 the charge sharpens into one about foresight: they looked that day without weighing what would follow, and today, instead of bearing the consequence of their own rashness, they are wearing themselves out in sorrow. Kural 1173 finds the whole thing funny. They looked of their own accord and in a hurry, and now they weep of their own accord, and there is something in that fit to be laughed at.

The next verses turn from reproach to what the eyes have spent. In 1174 they have handed her a grief there is no getting free of and have then dried up, with no water left in them to weep with. Kural 1175 measures what they made — a sickness of desire the sea is too small to hold — and sets beside it their own state, unable to close in sleep. In 1176 she says outright that this is sweet: the eyes that did it are caught in the very same thing.

Kural 1177 is the chapter's harshest line, and it is a curse. Let them labour and labour and let the water inside them run out, those eyes that gazed on him that day, melting.

Then the argument turns. Kural 1178 states the hard fact plainly: there is a man who wanted her with his words and not with his heart, and her eyes will still not settle without the sight of him. In 1179 both states cost exactly the same — no sleep when he does not come, no sleep when he does. And 1180 closes on exposure. When eyes are beaten drums like these, what a heart shuts in is not hard for a town to get at.

Kural 1171✦ Narrative

They themselves showed him to me, and that is the whole of how I came to know this grief that will not cool. What are these eyes weeping for now?AI draft

Those darkened eyes looked at him that day without once examining what it would come to. Now they will not work out that they brought it on themselves and must bear it. What is all this wasting for?AI draft

Kural 1173✦ Narrative

All at once, of themselves, they looked; and now, again of themselves, they sit and weep. There is something in this fit to be laughed at.AI draft

Kural 1174✦ Narrative

Kural 1175✦ Narrative

Oh, but this is sweet — the very eyes that made this grief for me have now fallen into it themselves.AI draft

Kural 1177✦ Narrative

Let them labour on and on until the water inside them is cut off — those eyes that gazed at him that day, wanting him, melting as they looked.AI draft

Kural 1178✦ Narrative

Kural 1179✦ Narrative
