காம இன்பம் கடல்= காமம் புணர்வால் இன்பம் செய்யுங்கால், அவ்வின்பம் கடல்போலப் பெரிதாம்; மற்று அஃது அடுங்கால் துன்பம் அதனின் பெரிது= இனி அதுதானே பிரிவால் துன்பம் செய்யுங்கால், அத்துன்பம் அக்கடலினும் பெரிதாம்.

The couplet measures the two things one source produces. When love gives pleasure through union, Parimelazhagar says, that pleasure is as great as the sea. When the same love afflicts through separation, that suffering is greater than the sea. What gave and what takes are not two different things but one, and that is the point of it.
