Parimelazhagar explains the phrase precisely: to live in harmony with the world is to conduct oneself the way the many worthy people have conducted themselves — keeping what is fitting for the times, setting aside what is not. We have all met the person of dazzling knowledge who cannot get along with anyone — and sensed that something essential is missing despite the brilliance. Valluvar names it exactly: they never learned the hardest subject, which is living well among others. By his measure, the most learned person who has not learned that has, in the thing that matters, learned nothing at all.
