The title belongs to the conduct, not the birth.
Valluvar redefines a revered word. The truly noble — the 'Anthanar' — are not such by lineage or ritual, he says, but those who live bearing tender compassion towards every living being. Across the Kural he keeps doing this: taking honoured labels and relocating them in character. The name is earned by how one treats the least creature, not by what one is called.
பெயர் பிறப்புக்கு அன்று, நடத்தைக்கு.
போற்றப்படும் ஒரு சொல்லை வள்ளுவர் மறுவரையறை செய்கிறார். உண்மையில் உயர்ந்தோர் — 'அந்தணர்' — குலத்தாலோ சடங்காலோ அப்படியாவதில்லை; எல்லா உயிர்மீதும் செவ்விய அருளைப் பூண்டு வாழ்பவரே என்கிறார். குறள் முழுவதும் இதையே செய்கிறார்: போற்றப்படும் பெயர்களை எடுத்து, அவற்றைப் பண்பில் மீள்நிறுவுகிறார். மிகச் சிறிய உயிரையும் எப்படி நடத்துகிறோம் என்பதால் அப்பெயர் ஈட்டப்படுகிறது, அழைக்கப்படும் பெயரால் அல்ல.
Compassion for all life, not a chosen few.
Note the reach: எவ்வுயிர்க்கும் — towards every living being, without exception. It is easy to be gracious to those who matter to us. The verse sets a far wider mark: the noble are recognised by a kindness that excludes nothing that breathes. Compassion that picks and chooses is not yet the compassion the word demands.
சிலருக்கு அன்று, எல்லா உயிர்க்கும் அருள்.

Gentleness as the mark of greatness.
After verses on stern self-mastery and fearsome wrath, the chapter closes on tenderness — செந்தண்மை, a warm, gracious coolness towards all. It is a deliberate resolution: the height of renunciation is not severity but kindness. The one who has mastered himself does not become hard; he becomes gentle.
மென்மையே பெருமையின் அடையாளம்.

Let mastery make you gentler, not harder.
Measure your growth by your kindness, especially towards those who can do nothing for you and the creatures beneath your notice. Self-discipline that hardens you has gone wrong somewhere; the genuine article softens you. Widen the circle of your compassion until nothing living is outside it.
