The fourth chapter of the Kural — urging the power of virtue (aram). Of the three ends the sages teach — virtue, wealth and pleasure — virtue alone yields all three of this world, the next, and release. So Valluvar presses it home: there is no gain greater than virtue and no ruin worse than forgetting it; do it now, by every means, with a heart free of envy, craving, anger and harsh words.
This is the chapter that has to persuade you, and it knows sentiment will not do it. So it argues from gain and loss instead: there is no greater gain available to anybody than virtue, and no greater ruin than letting it slip out of mind (31, 32).
What makes it useful rather than exhortation is how narrow it gets. Verse 34 reduces the whole thing to one line — keep the mind spotless; all the show and the talk is noise. Verse 35 goes further and simply names four things: envy, craving, anger, harsh speech. Virtue is defined as the road you walk without falling into those four. That is a definition you can check yourself against tonight, which is more than most moral writing offers. And 36 removes your last exit: do not say you will see to it later, because it is the one companion that does not fall away when the body does.
One honest note. Verse 37 offers the man carried in the litter and the man carrying it as evidence of what virtue earns — a claim about merit across births that belongs to its own age and its own cosmology.
