In an hour when he is not drinking, when he sees a man in his cups — does he never once think of the same slackness that was his own?

AI draft · pending reviewகள்ளை உண்ணாத; மது அருந்தாத
‘உண்ணா’ என்பது எதிர்மறைப் பெயரெச்சம்; அடுத்து வரும் ‘போழ்து’ என்ற பெயரை அது வருணிக்கிறது. ஆகவே இது மனிதனை அல்ல, நேரத்தையே வருணிக்கிறது — கள் உண்ணப்படாத ஒரு வேளை.
not drinking; in which liquor is not taken
உண்ணா is a negative adjectival participle qualifying the following noun போழ்து. It describes the hour rather than the man: an interval in which drink is not being taken.
பொழுதில்; வேளையில்
‘போழ்து’ என்பது பொழுது என்பதன் பழைய வடிவம். இடப்பொருள் உருபு ‘இல்’ சேர்ந்து ‘போழ்தில்’ ஆகி, செய்யுள் ஒலிப்பில் ‘போழ்திற்’ என நிற்கிறது.
in the time; during that interval
போழ்து is an older form of பொழுது, ‘time’. With the locative suffix இல் it becomes போழ்தில், printed here as போழ்திற் under the verse's sandhi.
களித்தவனை; மது அருந்திக் களிப்படைந்தவனை
இதற்கு முந்தைய பாடலிலும் இதே சொல் இதே வேற்றுமையில் வந்தது. அங்கே அவன் அறிவுரை பெறுபவன்; இங்கே அவன் பார்க்கப்படுபவன்.
‘the man who has become intoxicated’, in the accusative
The same word in the same case appears in the immediately preceding couplet. There he is the one being reasoned with; here he is the one being looked at.
காணும்போது
‘காணுங்கால்’ என்பது ‘காணும் + கால்’ — காணும் நேரத்தில் என்று பொருள். அதன் இறுதி ‘ல்’ அடுத்த அச்சுத் துண்டின் தொடக்கத்தில் அச்சிடப்பட்டிருப்பதால், ‘காணுங்கா’ என்று அரைச் சொல்லாகத் தோன்றுகிறது.
when he sees
காணுங்கால் is காணும் + கால், ‘at the time of seeing’. Its final ல் is printed at the head of the next token, leaving காணுங்கா looking like a truncated word.
நினைப்பதில்லை போலும்
இரு பக்கமும் ‘ல்’ நகர்ந்திருப்பதால் இது மிகவும் குழப்பமான அச்சுத் துண்டு. முழு வாசிப்பு ‘உள்ளான்கொல்’. ‘உள்ளான்’ = நினைப்பதில்லை; ‘கொல்’ = ஐயம், வியப்பு.
does he not consider it, one wonders
This printed piece has an ல் arriving from the previous token and another leaving for the next, which makes it the hardest fragment in the couplet. The reading is உள்ளான்கொல்: உள்ளான், ‘he does not consider’, plus கொல், a particle of doubt and wonder.
உண்டதற்கு உரிய; உண்ட செயலின்
‘உண்டது’ என்பது ‘உண்ட செயல்’ என்ற தொழிற்பெயர்; அதன் ஆறாம் வேற்றுமை வடிவம் ‘உண்டதன்’. முந்தைய சொல்லின் இறுதி ‘ல்’ இதன் தொடக்கத்தில் அச்சிடப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.
belonging to the having-drunk
உண்டது is the verbal noun ‘the act of having drunk’, and உண்டதன் is its genitive. The ல் at its head is the final letter of the preceding word.
தளர்ச்சி; நெகிழ்ந்து போன நிலை
‘சோர்’ என்பது தளர்தல், நெகிழ்தல் என்று பொருள்படும் வினை. கயிறு இறுக்கம் இழப்பதையும், தோள் சரிவதையும் இச்சொல் குறிக்கும். இது ஒழுக்கக் குறையை அல்ல, உடல்நிலையையே முதலில் சுட்டுகிறது.
slackness; a loosening or drooping
சோர் is a verb meaning to slacken or grow loose — a rope losing its tension, shoulders dropping. Its first reference is physical rather than moral.

How to read the romanization
ā · ī · ū · ē · ō — hold these vowels longer than a, i, u, e, o.
ḻ (ழ) — a distinctive curled Tamil sound, often written “zh”.
ṟ (ற) — a crisp Tamil alveolar sound; doubled ṟṟ is held more strongly.
ṉ (ன்) — the lighter n heard at the end of words such as pakavaṉ.
Doubled consonants are held or strengthened. Romanization is a reading aid; the audio and Tamil script remain the best guides.
இன்றைய உரைநடையில் ‘கள் குடிக்காத நேரத்தில்’ என்போம். ‘உண்ணா’ என்ற எதிர்மறைப் பெயரெச்ச வடிவம் இன்று எழுத்துத் தமிழில் மட்டுமே எஞ்சியிருக்கிறது.
Modern prose would say ‘at a time when he is not drinking’. The negative participle உண்ணா survives today mainly in written registers.
கள் · ளுண் · ணாப். ‘ள்’ மற்றும் ‘ண்’ இரண்டும் நாக்கை மடக்கிச் சொல்ல வேண்டிய ஒலிகள். ‘ணா’ நீளும்; இறுதி ‘ப்’ அடுத்த சொல்லோடு சேரும்.
Roughly kaḷ-ḷuṇ-ṇāp. Both ḷ and ṇ are retroflex, made with the tongue curled back; hold the ā and let the closing p run into the next word. Approximation only.

அகராதிப் பொருள்
Dictionary senseகள் — மது. உண் — உண்ணுதல், அருந்துதல். ‘உண்ணா’ என்பது அதன் எதிர்மறைப் பெயரெச்சம்.

இந்தக் குறளில் இதன் பணி
Role in this Kuralகாட்சி நிகழும் நிலையை அறுதியிடுகிறது. இச்சொல் இல்லாவிட்டா ல், அவன் அப்போது எந்த நிலையில் இருந்தான் என்பது தெளிவின்றிப் போய், செய்யுளின் முழு நுட்பமும் தொலைந்துவிடும்.
It fixes the condition the man is in when the scene happens. Without it there would be no way to tell what state he was in, and the entire point would be lost.
இன்றைய தமிழில்
Modern usageதெளிந்திருக்கும் நேரத்தில் பார்ப்பதே பயனுள்ளது; அப்போது பார்த்ததுதான் நினைவிலும் நிற்கும்.
What is seen in a clear-headed hour is what stays; that is the only hour in which looking is any use.
Reading this as ‘the man who does not drink’ inverts the sense. It describes an hour, not a person. The couplet assumes he does drink; this simply names an interval in which he is not.

drink not-drinking in-the-hour · the-intoxicated-man when-seeing · of-the-drinking slackness · does-he-not-consider
Tamil sets the hour first, then the sight, then the thing that ought to be thought of, and only at the very end the verb with its particle of wonder. Because the finite verb arrives last, the reader has already watched the whole scene before the question ‘does he not consider it?’ lands. English has to bring the verb forward, which spends the delay that produces the astonishment.
கள் உண்ணாப் போழ்தில் களித்தானைக் காணுங்கால், தான் உண்டதன் சோர்வை அவன் உள்ளான்கொல்?
In an hour of not drinking, when he sees the man who has become intoxicated — does he not consider the slackness of his own drinking?
A man who drinks is, at this particular moment, sober. In front of him stands someone else who is not, and that person's unsteadiness is precisely the state he himself is in on other evenings. The couplet does not accuse him of denying it. It asks, with a note of wonder, whether the thought occurs to him at all — and answers that it seems not to. The obstacle is that no one has ever observed their own condition from outside it.
Grammar that unlocks the line
உள்ளான் is a negative finite verb, ‘he does not consider’. The particle கொல் converts it from a flat charge into a wondering question — ‘does he really not?’ Parimelazhagar closes with கருதான் போலும், ‘it seems he does not consider it.’ Losing that tone turns an astonished question into an accusation.
The reading is காணுங்கால் உள்ளான்கொல். Print divides it as காணுங்கா / லுள்ளான்கொ, so neither printed piece is a lexical word. The ல் at the boundary belongs to காணுங்கால்.
The same thing recurs in உள்ளான்கொல் உண்டதன். Final ல் of கொல் is printed at the head of the next token as லுண்டதன். Two carryovers in one couplet make it clear that the printed division is not a word division.
உண்டதன் is the genitive of the verbal noun உண்டது, ‘the having-drunk’. So உண்டதன் சோர்வு is not ‘his slackness’ but ‘the slackness belonging to the drinking’. Attaching it to the act rather than to the person keeps the couplet from defining the man by it.
போழ்து means a time or interval. கள் உண்ணாப் போழ்தில் fixes when the scene happens — during his sober hour. That time-marker carries the whole force: intoxication cannot be blamed for the failure to recognise, because he is clear-headed at that moment.
இதற்கு முந்தைய பாடலிலும் ‘களித்தானை’ இரண்டாம் வேற்றுமையில் வந்தது. அங்கே அவன் காரணம் பெறுபவன்; இங்கே அவன் காணப்படுபவன். ஒரே சொல்லை அடுத்தடுத்து வைத்து, ஒரே மனிதனை இரு கோணங்களில் நிறுத்துவது இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் அமைப்பு நுட்பம்.
The immediately preceding couplet also used களித்தானை in the accusative. There he is the one being reasoned with; here he is the one being looked at. Placing the same word in consecutive couplets sets one figure in two different relations, which is part of the chapter's construction.
