களித்தானைக்
களித்தான் + ஐ (அடுத்த ‘க’வுக்கு முன் ‘க்’ ஒற்று)
kaḷittāṉaik

Plain English

‘the man who has become intoxicated’, in the accusative

The root களி covers both joy and stupefaction; the chapter setting fixes the sense as intoxication by drink. The accusative ஐ marks him as the one on whom the advising is performed.

காரணங்
காரணம் (‘ம்’ அடுத்த ‘க’வுக்கு முன் ‘ங்’ ஆனது)
kāraṇaṅ

Plain English

a reason; the grounds offered for why something is not fitting

The final m of காரணம் assimilates to ṅ before the k of காட்டுதல். This is ordinary Tamil sandhi, not a separate lexical form.

காட்டுதல்
காட்டு + தல் (தொழிற்பெயர் விகுதி)
kāṭṭutal
இந்தக் குறளில் பொருள்

காட்டுதல்; எடுத்துரைத்துத் தெளிவிக்கும் செயல்

இது வினை அல்ல; ‘தல்’ விகுதி பெற்ற தொழிற்பெயர். எனவே ‘களித்தானைக் காரணம் காட்டுதல்’ என்ற தொடர் முழுவதும் ஒரு செயலாகி எழுவாய் நிலையை அடைகிறது.

Plain English

the act of showing or setting something out

This is not a finite verb but a verbal noun in -தல். The whole phrase களித்தானைக் காரணம் காட்டுதல் therefore becomes a single named action serving as the subject.

கீழ்நீர்க்
கீழ் + நீர் (உரையில் ‘நீர்க் கீழ்’ என மாற்றிக் கொள்ளப்படுகிறது)
kīḻnīrk
இந்தக் குறளில் பொருள்

நீருக்குக் கீழே; நீரின் அடியில்

அச்சு வரிசை ‘கீழ்நீர்’ எனினும், பரிமேலழகர் ‘நீர்க் கீழ்’ என்று மாற்றி ‘நீருள் மூழ்கினான்’ என்று விளக்குகிறார். ஆகவே ‘கீழ்’ நீரின் தன்மையை அல்ல, இடத்தையே குறிக்கிறது.

Plain English

below the water; beneath the surface

Though printed as கீழ்நீர், the commentary reorders it as நீர்க் கீழ் and glosses ‘sunk within the water’. கீழ் marks position beneath, not a quality of the water.

குளித்தானைத்
குளித்தான் + ஐ (அடுத்த ‘த’வுக்கு முன் ‘த்’ ஒற்று)
kuḷittāṉait
இந்தக் குறளில் பொருள்

மூழ்கியவனை; நீருக்குள் அமிழ்ந்தவனை

இன்றைய வழக்கில் ‘குளித்தல்’ நீராடுதல் என்று பொருள்படும். இங்கு உரை ‘நீருள் மூழ்கினான்’ என்பதால், நீருக்கடியில் அமிழ்ந்து மறைந்திருத்தல் என்ற பழம் பொருளே கொள்ளப்படுகிறது.

Plain English

‘the man who has submerged himself’, in the accusative

In current Tamil குளித்தல் means to bathe. The commentary's gloss requires the older sense of plunging under and remaining beneath the surface.

தீத்துரீஇ
தீ + துரீஇ (துருவு / துரவு என்பதன் செய்யுள் அளபெடை வடிவம்)
tītturīi

Plain English

searching with fire; probing about with a torch

துரீஇ is a lengthened poetic form of துருவு, ‘to probe or search out’, the vowel drawn out for metre. The word names not standing with a lamp but actively sweeping it about in search.

யற்று
அற்று (முன்னுள்ள இகர ஒலியால் ‘ய்’ உடம்படுமெய் சேர்ந்தது)
yaṟṟu
இந்தக் குறளில் பொருள்

அத்தன்மையது; அதற்கு ஒப்பானது

‘யற்று’ என்று தனியாக ஒரு சொல் இல்லை. ‘தீத்துரீஇ’ இகரத்தில் முடிவதால், ‘அற்று’ என்பதற்கு முன் ‘ய்’ தோன்றுகிறது. வாசிப்பு ‘தீத்துரீஇ அற்று’ என்பதே.

Plain English

is of that same nature; is equivalent to that

யற்று is not an independent word. Because தீத்துரீஇ ends in i, the glide y appears before அற்று. The reading is தீத்துரீஇ அற்று.

How to read the romanization

ā · ī · ū · ē · ō — hold these vowels longer than a, i, u, e, o.

ḻ (ழ) — a distinctive curled Tamil sound, often written “zh”.

ṟ (ற) — a crisp Tamil alveolar sound; doubled ṟṟ is held more strongly.

ṉ (ன்) — the lighter n heard at the end of words such as pakavaṉ.

Doubled consonants are held or strengthened. Romanization is a reading aid; the audio and Tamil script remain the best guides.

களித்தானைக்
kaḷittāṉaik
Literary register · accusative formசெய்யுள் வழக்கு · இரண்டாம் வேற்றுமை
the intoxicated manone who has drunkthe person being advisedrecipient of the reasoning

இன்றைய உரைநடையில் ‘குடித்து மயங்கியவரிடம்’ என்று சொல்வோம். ‘களித்தான்’ என்ற பெயர்வினை வடிவம் இன்று வழக்கில் இல்லை; ஆனால் ‘களிப்பு’ என்ற சொல் இன்றும் நிற்கிறது.

Modern prose would say ‘to the person who has drunk and become unsteady’. The participial noun களித்தான் is no longer current, though the related noun களிப்பு remains in ordinary use.

Pronunciation
kaḷitṉaik

க · ளித் · தா · னைக். ‘ளி’ சொல்லும்போது நாக்கை மேல்நோக்கி மடக்க வேண்டும். ‘தா’ நீளும். இறுதி ‘க்’ ஒற்று அடுத்த சொல்லின் ‘கா’வோடு சேர்ந்து ஒலிக்கும்.

Roughly ka-ḷit-tā-ṉaik. ḷ is a retroflex sound with no English equivalent; hold the ā, and let the closing k run straight into the following word. Approximation only.

அகராதிப் பொருள்

Dictionary sense

‘களி’ என்பது மகிழ்தல், மயங்குதல் என்று பொருள்படும் வினை. அதிலிருந்து வந்த ‘களித்தான்’ என்பது களித்தவன் என்ற வினையாலணையும் பெயர்; ‘ஐ’ சேர்ந்து செயப்படுபொருளாகிறது.

களி is a verb meaning to rejoice or to become stupefied. களித்தான் is the participial noun ‘he who has become so’, and the suffix ஐ makes it the object of the action.

இந்தக் குறளில் இதன் பணி

Role in this Kural

ஒப்புமையின் முதல் பக்கத்தில் யாரை நோக்கி முயற்சி செல்கிறது என்பதைச் சுட்டுகிறது. இச்சொல்லுக்கு இணையாக இரண்டாம் பக்கத்தில் ‘குளித்தானை’ நிற்கிறது; இரண்டும் ஒரே வேற்றுமையில் இருப்பதே ஒப்புமையின் அமைப்பை உறுதிசெய்கிறது.

It names the destination of the effort in the first half of the comparison. Its counterpart in the second half is குளித்தானை, and the two standing in the same case is what locks the two halves together.

இன்றைய தமிழில்

Modern usage

களித்திருப்பவரிடம் அப்போது பேசி முடிவெடுக்க வேண்டாம்; காலையில் அதே பேச்சைத் தொடங்குங்கள்.

Do not settle anything by talking to a person while they are intoxicated; begin the same conversation in the morning.

மொழிபெயர்ப்பு நுணுக்கம்

Translation nuance

‘குடித்தவன்’ என்று மட்டும் மொழிபெயர்த்தால் போதாது. குடித்த செயலை அல்ல, அதனால் வந்த மயக்க நிலையையே ‘களித்தான்’ சுட்டுகிறது. ஒப்புமை நிற்பது அந்த நிலையின்மேலேயே.

Rendering this as ‘the man who drank’ is not enough. களித்தான் names the resulting condition rather than the act of drinking, and the whole comparison rests on that condition.

Literal Tamil order

the-intoxicated-man · reason showing · below-water the-submerged-man · fire-searching · is-of-that-nature

Tamil states the recipient first (களித்தானை) and then the action (காரணம் காட்டுதல்), and that action is the grammatical subject. The second half of the comparison then repeats the same shape—recipient (கீழ்நீர்க் குளித்தானை), then action (தீத்துரீஇ). அற்று arrives last and binds the two as one kind of thing. English has to move the comparison word into the middle, which loosens the exact limb-for-limb symmetry the Tamil holds.

களித்தானைக் காரணம் காட்டித் தெளிவித்தல், நீருக்குக் கீழ் மூழ்கியவனை விளக்கால் தேடுதல் அற்று.

Setting out reasons to bring clarity to the intoxicated man is like searching with a lamp for the one who has sunk below the water.

Complete meaning ·

You may stand beside someone who has drunk and patiently explain why what they are doing is wrong. The verse says that effort is the same as walking along a bank at night with a torch, looking for a person who has gone under the water. Neither the torch nor the explanation is faulty. Light does not travel below the surface, and at that hour a reason does not reach an understanding that has gone under. The point is about the hour, not about the value of reasoning or the worth of the person.

Grammar that unlocks the line

‘காட்டுதல்’ ஒரு தொழிற்பெயர்; அதுவே எழுவாய்
A verbal noun carries the whole first clause

காட்டுதல் is a verbal noun formed from காட்டு, ‘to show’. The whole phrase களித்தானைக் காரணம் காட்டுதல் therefore names an action and stands as the subject of the sentence. What is being compared is an act, not a man, and that is what keeps the comparison from becoming an insult to the adviser.

‘அற்று’ முன் நிற்கும் ‘ய்’ ஒலிப்புணர்ச்சி
A glide appears before the comparison word

யற்று is not a dictionary word. Because தீத்துரீஇ ends in an i-vowel, the glide y appears before the following அற்று, and print shows the result as யற்று. The reading is தீத்துரீஇ அற்று.

‘அற்று’ என்பது ஒப்புமையை முடிக்கும் சொல்
The closing word of a Kural simile

‘அற்று’ என்பது ‘அத்தன்மையது’, ‘அதற்கு ஒப்பானது’ என்று பொருள்படும். திருக்குறளில் ஒப்புமையை முடிக்கப் பயன்படும் வழக்கமான சொல் இது. இது ‘ஒருவேளை ஒக்கும்’ என்ற ஐயத்தைச் சொல்லவில்லை; இரண்டும் ஒரே தன்மையன என்று அறுதியிடுகிறது.

அற்று means ‘of that nature’, ‘equivalent to that’. It is the standard closing word of a Kural simile. It does not hedge towards ‘somewhat resembles’; it states that the two acts are of one kind.

உரை மாற்றி வைக்கும் ‘கீழ்நீர்’
The commentary reverses the printed word order

அச்சில் ‘கீழ்நீர்க் குளித்தானை’ என்று வருகிறது. பரிமேலழகர் அதை ‘நீர்க் கீழ்க் குளித்தானை’ என்று மாற்றி, ‘நீருள் மூழ்கினான்’ என்று விளக்குகிறார். எனவே ‘கீழ்’ என்பது நீரின் வகையைக் குறிக்கவில்லை; நீருக்குக் கீழே என்ற இடத்தையே குறிக்கிறது.

The printed order is கீழ்நீர்க் குளித்தானை. Parimelazhagar reads it as நீர்க் கீழ்க் குளித்தானை and glosses it as ‘one who has sunk within the water’. கீழ் therefore marks position below the surface rather than describing the water itself.

இரு பக்கத்திலும் ‘பிறன் ஒருவன்’
Both halves have an unnamed second person

Neither the adviser nor the searcher is named in the couplet. The commentary supplies ‘another man’ on both sides. The comparison then matches limb for limb: in each half one person directs effort towards another, and in each half the destination cannot receive it.

‘குளித்தல்’ இங்கு நீராடுதல் அல்ல
An older sense of the bathing verb

இன்றைய வழக்கில் ‘குளித்தல்’ என்பது நீராடுதல். இங்கு உரை ‘நீருள் மூழ்கினான்’ என்று விளக்குவதால், நீருக்கடியில் மூழ்கி மறைந்திருத்தல் என்ற பழைய பொருளே கொள்ளப்படுகிறது. இந்த வேறுபாட்டை மறந்தால் ஒப்புமையின் கூர்மை முழுவதும் தொலைந்துவிடும்.

In current usage குளித்தல் means to bathe. The commentary's gloss நீருள் மூழ்கினான் requires the older sense of going under and being hidden beneath the surface. Losing that distinction removes the entire force of the image.
