Do not desire gambling, even if you can win. What you won is the fish swallowing the hook's metal, taking it for food.

“Seek not the gamester's play; though you should win, / Your gain is as the baited hook the fish takes in.”

AI draft · pending reviewவிரும்ப வேண்டாம்; விருப்பம் கொள்ளாதொழிக
செயலைத் தடுக்கும் சொல் அல்ல இது; விருப்பத்தைத் தடுக்கும் சொல். ஆடுவதைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லாமல் விரும்புவதைப் பற்றிச் சொல்வதால், வெல்லும் ஆற்றல் உள்ளவரையும் இது சேர்த்துக்கொள்கிறது.
let him not desire; do not want it
This forbids the wanting rather than the doing. Because it addresses desire and not play, it reaches a person who is confident of winning.
வென்றாலும்; வெல்ல நேர்ந்தாலும்
‘இடு’ துணைவினை உறுதியைக் கூட்டுகிறது; ‘இன்’ நிபந்தனையையும், ‘உம்’ ஒப்புதலையும் தருகிறது. இறுதி ‘ம்’ அடுத்த ‘சூதினை’ என்பதன் ‘ச’வுக்கு முன் ‘ஞ்’ ஆக மாறுகிறது.
even if he wins
The auxiliary இடு adds definiteness, -இன் makes it conditional, and உம் makes it concessive. Final m assimilates to ñ before the c of சூதினை.
சூதாட்டத்தை; பணயம் வைத்து விளையாடுவதை
‘சூது’ என்பது பணயம் வைத்து நிகழ்த்தப்படும் ஆட்டம்; வஞ்சனை என்ற பொருளும் இச்சொல்லுக்கு உண்டு. இரண்டாம் வேற்றுமை உருபு சேர்ந்து, ‘வேண்டற்க’ என்பதன் செயப்படுபொருளாகிறது.
gambling, in the accusative
சூது is a game played for stakes, and the same word also carries the sense of guile. The accusative marks it as the object of ‘do not desire’.
வென்று பெற்றதுவும்; வென்ற பொருளும்கூட
‘வென்றது’ என்ற தொழிற்பெயருடன் ‘உம்’ சேர்ந்திருக்கிறது; ஓசைக்காக உயிர் நீட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. இங்குள்ள ‘உம்’ ‘கூட’ என்ற பொருள் தருவதால், வெற்றியும் விதிவிலக்கு அல்ல என்பது உறுதியாகிறது.
what was won, too
The verbal noun வென்றது carries உம், with the vowel lengthened for metre. The உம் means ‘even’, which is what denies the winnings any exemption.
the metal of the fishhook; per the commentary, its iron
பொன் normally means gold, but the commentary's gloss தூண்டில் இரும்பினை fixes it here as the hook's iron. Naming the instrument of capture with the word for the most coveted metal is the line's fine point.
விழுங்கிய மீன்; அதை உட்கொண்ட மீன்
‘விழுங்கி’ என்பது விழுங்கிய நிலையைக் குறிக்கும் வினையாலணையும் பெயர். செயலை அல்ல, அச்செயல் முடிந்த நிலையையே இது முன்வைக்கிறது; ஒப்புமை நிற்பதும் அந்த நிலையின்மேலேயே.
the fish that has swallowed it
விழுங்கி is a participial noun naming the fish in its resulting state rather than the act of swallowing, and the comparison rests on that state.
அத்தன்மையது; அதற்கு ஒப்பானது
‘யற்று’ என்ற தனிச் சொல் இல்லை. ‘மீன்விழுங்கி’ இகரத்தில் முடிவதால் ‘ய்’ தோன்றி, ‘அற்று’ என்பதோடு சேர்ந்து அச்சில் இவ்வாறு நிற்கிறது.
is of that same nature; amounts to that
யற்று is not a word in itself. Because மீன்விழுங்கி ends in i, a y-glide appears and joins அற்று, which is how print shows it.

How to read the romanization
ā · ī · ū · ē · ō — hold these vowels longer than a, i, u, e, o.
ḻ (ழ) — a distinctive curled Tamil sound, often written “zh”.
ṟ (ற) — a crisp Tamil alveolar sound; doubled ṟṟ is held more strongly.
ṉ (ன்) — the lighter n heard at the end of words such as pakavaṉ.
Doubled consonants are held or strengthened. Romanization is a reading aid; the audio and Tamil script remain the best guides.
இன்றைய உரைநடையில் ‘விரும்ப வேண்டாம்’ என்போம். ‘அற்க’ விகுதி இன்று வழக்கில் இல்லை; திரு க்குறளில் அது தொடர்ந்து வருகிறது.
Modern prose would say ‘do not desire’. The -அற்க ending is no longer current, though it recurs throughout the Kural.
வேண் · டற் · க. ‘வே’ நீளும்; ‘ண்’ ந ாக்கை மடக்கிச் சொல்ல வேண்டியது; ‘ற்’ வலிந்த ஒலி.
Roughly vēṇ-ṭaṟ-ka. Hold the ē; ṇ is retroflex; ṟ is a hard alveolar sound absent from English. Approximation only.

அகராதிப் பொருள்
Dictionary senseவேண்டு — விரும்புதல், வேண்டுதல். ‘அற்க’ சேர்ந்து செய்யாதே என்ற எதிர்மறை ஏவலாகிறது.
வேண்டு — to want, to desire, to request. With -அற்க it becomes a negative imperative.
இந்தக் குறளில் இதன் பணி
Role in this Kuralபாடல் முழுவதற்குமான கட்டளை இதுவே. இது ‘ஆடற்க’ என்று இல்லாததால், வெல்பவர் தப்பிக்க வழி இல்லாமல் போகிறது.
It is the single command the couplet issues. Because it is not ‘do not play’, a winner has no way to stand outside it.
இன்றைய தமிழில்
Modern usageவெல்ல முடியும் என்று தெரிந்தபோதும் அதை விரும்பாமல் இருப்பதே கடினமான பகுதி.
The hard part is not wanting it at the moment you know you could win.
மொழிபெயர்ப்பு நுணுக்கம்
Translation nuance‘சூதாடாதே’ என்று மொழிபெயர்த்தால் பொருள் சுரு ங்கிவிடும். செயலை அல்ல, அதன்மேல் எழும் விருப்பத்தையே இச்சொல் தடுக்கிறது; அந்த வேறுபாட்டின்மேலேயே பாடலின் வாதம் நிற்கிறது.
Rendering this as ‘do not gamble’ narrows it. The word forbids the desire that precedes the act, and the couplet's argument stands on that distinction.

தமிழ்த் தொடரை வாசிப்பது எப்படி?
even-if-winning · gambling let-him-not-desire · what-was-won too · hook's metal · fish having-swallowed is-of-that-nature
Tamil places the concession first and the prohibition after it, so the reader has already granted that winning happens before the command arrives. The second line then raises a new subject, ‘what was won too’, unfolds the comparison, and closes on அற்று. English can open with ‘even if’, but it cannot hold the comparison-closing word until the end, so the final thud of equivalence is softened.
வென்றிடினும் சூதினை வேண்டற்க; வென்றதூஉம் தூண்டில் பொன் மீன் விழுங்கி அற்று.
Even if one wins, let him not desire gambling; what was won too is like a fish having swallowed the hook's metal.
The instruction is not to want gambling at all, and it is addressed even to someone confident of winning. The reason given is unusual: it is the winnings that are the problem. What you take home is compared to the iron of a hook that a fish has swallowed believing it to be food, because the bait was wrapped around it. The fish is not careless. Bait and iron reach it as a single object, and a win reaches a person the same way.
Grammar that unlocks the line
வேண்டு is to want or desire, and -அற்க is the negative imperative ending. The command is therefore not ‘do not play’ but ‘do not want’. Placing it before the act is what allows it to apply to a person confident of winning.
வென்றிடின் is a conditional verbal participle, and the added உம் makes it concessive: ‘even if he wins’. The line does not claim winning fails to happen; it grants that it happens and forbids the desire anyway. This one word carries the whole argument.
The verbal noun வென்றது takes உம் to give ‘what was won too’. Metrical lengthening stretches the vowel, producing வென்றதூஉம். The உம் carries the sense ‘even’, which is what rules the winnings out as an exception.
தூண்டில் is a fishhook, and பொன் compounded with it yields ‘the hook's metal’. பொன் ordinarily means gold, but Parimelazhagar glosses the phrase as தூண்டில் இரும்பினை, the iron of the hook, fixing the reference here.
‘மீன்’ என்பதோடு ‘விழுங்கி’ சேர்ந்து, விழுங்கிய மீனைக் குறிக்கும் வினையாலணையும் பெயராக நிற்கிறது. விழுங்கும் செயலைவிட, விழுங்கிய நிலையில் இருக்கும் மீனையே இச்சொல் முன்வைக்கிறது; ஒப்புமை நிற்பது அந்த நிலையின்மேலேயே.
மீன் combines with விழுங்கி to form a participial noun denoting the fish that has swallowed. It presents the fish in its resulting state rather than the act of swallowing, and the comparison rests on that state.
Because மீன்விழுங்கி ends in an i-vowel, a y-glide appears before the following அற்று and print shows யற்று. No such dictionary word exists. Here அற்று stands in the closing position and settles the whole sentence as a statement of equivalence.
