Asking has a grace — and not asking is ten million times better

A reconciliation exists and is well established — but it is a position, not a closing of the question.

The men who nought deny, but know what's due, before their face / To stand as suppliants affords especial grace. G.U. Pope, 1886

To stand before someone whose heart conceals nothing and who knows what is due, and to ask, has a beauty of its own.

Ten million-fold 'tis greater gain, asking no alms to live, / Even from those, like eyes in worth, who nought concealing gladly give. G.U. Pope, 1886

Not asking — even of one who conceals nothing and gives gladly — is ten million times better than gaining wealth by asking.

The reading

AI draft · pending scholar review

Chapter 106 allows asking and finds a grace in it. Chapter 107, the very next chapter, tells a reader to dread the same act. What makes the pair sharp is that both verses describe the same giver in the same words.

1053 says that to stand before someone whose heart conceals nothing and who knows what is due, and to ask, has a beauty of its own. Parimelazhagar adds that the beauty belongs to the destitute. 1061 takes that same giver — one who conceals nothing and gives gladly — and says that not asking even of him, and staying poor, is ten million times better than gaining wealth by asking.

The qualifying condition is therefore identical. It is not that one verse imagines a generous giver and the other a grudging one. Both imagine the best giver there is, and one says asking him is graceful while the other says refusing to ask him is worth ten million times more.

The reconciliation available is that 106 describes what dignity survives when a person must ask, and 107 describes the better course when there is a choice. That reading is sound and should be given. It is worth noticing that Parimelazhagar offers it in neither gloss.
