Unresolved Kural 380 · Kural 620

Fate arrives first — and the persistent see its back

The two verses pull against each other and the tradition does not reconcile them.

Kural 380

What powers so great as those of Destiny? Man's skill / Some other thing contrives; but fate's beforehand still. G.U. Pope, 1886

Devise a means of escaping fate and fate arrives ahead of you — by way of that very means, or by another. Nothing is stronger.

Who strive with undismayed, unfaltering mind, / At length shall leave opposing fate behind. G.U. Pope, 1886

Those who work without flagging and without delay will see even fate's back.

The reading

AI draft · pending scholar review

Chapter 38 says nothing outmatches fate. Chapter 62 says the persistent defeat it. Two hundred and forty verses apart, and the second verse reaches back and takes the first one's own word.

Most apparent conflicts in the Kural soften once you notice that the two verses address different people, or different stages of a life. This one does not soften. In 620 fate stands in the accusative — ஊழையும் — as the thing acted upon; in 380 it is what acts, தான் முந்துறும், it gets there first. The later verse is not changing the subject; it is answering.

Nor does the commentary dissolve it. Parimelazhagar glosses 380 by insisting that fate overtakes even the stratagem devised to escape it, and glosses 620 by saying the persistent see the back of the very fate that blocks their result. Both readings are forceful. Neither is reconciled with the other.

The book asserts both, two hundred and forty verses apart, and reconciles them nowhere.
