AI draft · pending reviewநோய் உற்றவன்; உரை தரும் சொல்லில் ஆதுரன்
‘உறு’ என்பது அடைதல், நேர்தல். ‘உற்றான்’ என்பது தனக்கு ஒன்று நேர்ந்தவன். பரிமேலழகர் இதனை ‘ஆதுரன்’ என்று கொள்கிறார்.
the one it has come upon
உறு is to meet with or to befall, so this names the man to whom something has happened. The commentary reads him as the sick person.
அவனுடைய அளவும்
தொடக்க ‘ன்’ முந்தைய சொல்லுக்கு உரியது. இங்கு ‘அளவு’ என்பது எண்ணிக்கை அல்ல; அவன் தாங்கக்கூடிய நிலை. உரை ‘ஆதுரன் அளவினையும்’ என்கிறது.
and his measure
The opening n belongs to the previous word. The measure here is not a count but what the man can bear, which the commentary marks by giving it to the sick person himself.
பிணியின் அளவும்
‘பிணி’ கட்டுதல் என்னும் பொருளுடைய அடியிலிருந்து பிறந்தது; பிணித்து வைப்பதே நோய். இங்கு அதன் அளவு என்பது அது எவ்வளவு தூரம் சென்றிருக்கிறது என்பது.
and the extent of the illness
பிணி grows from a root meaning to bind, so the illness is named as what fetters. Its measure here is how far it has advanced.
காலமும்; செய்வதற்கு ஏற்ற பொழுதும்
மூன்றாவது பொருள். இதற்கு மட்டும் ‘அளவு’ சேர்க்கப்படவில்லை. உரை இதனை ‘தன் செயற்கு ஏற்ற காலம்’ என்று விரிக்கிறது.
and the time
The third object, and the only one to which the word for measure is not attached. The commentary expands it as the time suited to his own act.
கற்றவன்; ஆயுள்வேதம் கற்ற மருத்துவன் என்று உரை
அடி ‘மருத்துவன்’ என்னும் சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்தவே இல்லை; ‘கற்றான்’ என்று மட்டுமே சொல்கிறது. பரிமேலழகரே அதனை ‘ஆயுள் வேதத்தினைக் கற்ற மருத்துவன்’ என்று நிரப்புகிறார்.
the one who has studied
The line never uses a word for physician; it says only the one who has learned, and the commentary supplies the physician trained in the Ayurvedic treatise.
கருதி; மனத்தில் நிறுத்தி எடைபோட்டு
‘கருது’ என்பது மனத்தால் நிறுத்திப் பார்த்தல். இது வினையெச்சம்; தனித்து முடியாமல் ‘செயல்’ என்பதோடு சேர்ந்தே முடிகிறது.
having weighed it in the mind
கருது is to hold something in the mind and weigh it. The form is a dependent participle, so it does not complete until the final verb arrives.
செய்க; செய்தல்
‘அல்’ விகுதி பெற்ற தொழிற்பெயர்; ஆனால் இங்கு ஏவல் பொருளில் நிற்கிறது. உரை ‘அவற்றோடு பொருந்தச் செய்க’ என்று முடிப்பதே இதை உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறது.
let him act
A verbal noun formed with the action suffix, standing here with the force of a command, which the commentary confirms by closing on the plain imperative.

How to read the romanization
ā · ī · ū · ē · ō — hold these vowels longer than a, i, u, e, o.
ḻ (ழ) — a distinctive curled Tamil sound, often written “zh”.
ṟ (ற) — a crisp Tamil alveolar sound; doubled ṟṟ is held more strongly.
ṉ (ன்) — the lighter n heard at the end of words such as pakavaṉ.
Doubled consonants are held or strengthened. Romanization is a reading aid; the audio and Tamil script remain the best guides.
‘உறு’ இன்றும் ‘உற்றார்’, ‘உற்றுநோக்கு’ போன்ற தொடர்களில் வழங்குகிறது. ஆனால் ஒருவனை ‘உற்றான்’ என்று நோயின் காரணமாகச் சுட்டுவது இன்றைய வழக்கில் இல்லை.
The root is alive in everyday words for close kin and for looking hard at something, though naming a sick man as the one it befell has left modern speech.
உற் · றா. இரட்டித்த ‘ற்ற’ கடினமாக ஒலிக்கும்; இறுதி ‘ன்’ அடுத்த துண்டோடு சேர்ந்து கேட்கும்.
Roughly uṟ-ṟā with a hard doubled consonant in the middle, and the closing n heard at the head of the next token. Approximation only.

அகராதிப் பொருள்

உறு — to meet with, to befall, to come upon. உற்றான் — he to whom it has come.
இந்தக் குறளில் இதன் பணி
Role in this Kuralமுதல் அளவின் உடைமையாளன் இவனே. இது ஒரு வகைப்பெயர் அல்ல; நிகழ்ந்த ஒன்றைக் கொண்டே ஒருவனைப் பெயரிடும் அமைப்பு.
He owns the first of the two measures, and the form names him by an event rather than by a category he belongs to.
இன்றைய தமிழில்
Modern usageநோய் உற்றவரின் நிலையை அறியாமல் எதையும் தொடங்க முடியாது என்று மருத்துவர் சொன்னார்.
Older Tamil could name a man simply as the one it had come upon, and no further label was needed.
Patient turns him into a class of person. This word classifies nobody permanently; it reports only something that has happened to him, which matters because the thing being measured is a state and not an identity.

தமிழ்த் தொடரை வாசிப்பது எப்படி?
afflicted-one's measure-also · illness measure-also · time-also · learned-one having-weighed · let-him-act
Tamil unloads all three objects first and only then reveals who is doing the weighing, so a listener carries the measures before meeting the man. The final consonant of the participle also doubles onto the last word, which glues the weighing and the acting together in sound with no gap between them. English has to put its subject in front, and in doing so it loses both the front-loading of the measures and that audible join.
கற்றான் உற்றான் அளவும் பிணி அளவும் காலமும் கருதிச் செயல்.
Let the one who has studied weigh the measure of the afflicted, the measure of the illness, and the time, and act.
Three objects are stacked up first and the subject arrives only afterwards. What has to be weighed is the measure of the man the illness has come upon, the measure of the illness running in him, and the time fit for the act. The word for measure attaches to the first two and not to the third, and the commentary supplies the yardstick the line withholds there. Weighing is not a stage that finishes on its own either: the participle stands unresolved until the final word for acting, so the measuring happens inside the doing.
Grammar that unlocks the line
Both are masculine verbal nouns of the same past-stem shape, and both agree on the second syllable, which is the Tamil rhyme position. One man is named by what befell him and the other by what he acquired, and each stands at the head of a line.
உற்றான் அளவும், பிணி அளவும் — இரண்டோடும் ‘அளவு’ சேர்கிறது. மூன்றாவதாக வரும் ‘காலமும்’ அளவின்றி நிற்கிறது. பரிமேலழகர் அதற்கு ‘தன் செயற்கு ஏற்ற’ என்று நிரப்புகிறார்; ஆகவே அவர் அதைத் தொகையாக அன்றி, தகுதியாகவே படித்திருக்கிறார்.
The word for measure joins both the afflicted man and the illness, while the third item stands bare. Parimelazhagar fills that gap with the phrase suited to his own act, so he reads the time as a matter of fitness rather than of quantity.
அளவும், அளவும், காலமும் — மூன்றும் எண்ணும்மை பெற்று ஒர ே தளத்தில் நிற்கின்றன. இது வரிசை அல்ல; ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாகச் செய்யப்படுவது அல்ல. மூன்றும் ஒருசேரக் கருதப்பட வேண்டியவை.
All three objects carry the enumerative suffix and therefore stand on one level. This is not a sequence to be worked through in order but a set to be held together in a single act of attention.
‘கருதி’ வினையெச்சம்; அது தானே முடிவு பெறாது, ‘செயல்’ என்னும் முடிவினையையே சார்ந்திருக்கிறது. ஆகவே கருதுதல் ஒரு தனி நிலையாக அல்ல, செயலின் ஒரு பகுதியாகவே நிற்கிறது. ‘நாடி’ என்னும் தேடலின் வினை அல்ல இது; எடைபோடுதலின் வினை.
The participle for weighing takes no ending of its own and leans entirely on the final verb, so the weighing is not a separate completed stage but part of the act itself. It is a verb of holding in the mind rather than of searching out.
‘செய்’ என்னும் அடி ‘அல்’ விகுதி பெற்ற தொழிற்பெயர். ஆனால் இங்கு அது ‘செய்க’ என்னும் ஏவல் பொருளிலேயே நிற்கிறது; பரிமேலழகரும் ‘செய்க’ என்றே முடிக்கிறார். செய்யுளின் இறுதிச் சொல் இதுவே.
The last word is a verbal noun formed with the suffix for action, yet it functions as a command, and the commentary closes it with the plain imperative form. The sentence ends on the doing.
The line says nothing about how the weighing is done, and the commentary supplies looking by the method of that treatise. The line says nothing about what follows the weighing, and the commentary requires the act to accord with the three. Without those two additions the measuring would hang unattached to anything.
