Contested Kural 253 · Kural 761

The armed hand cannot look at grace — and the army is the king's first wealth

A reconciliation exists and is well established — but it is a position, not a closing of the question.

Chapter 26 · புலான்மறுத்தல் · Abstaining from Flesh

Like heart of them that murderous weapons bear, his mind, / Who eats of savoury meat, no joy in good can find. G.U. Pope, 1886

The mind of one who has eaten another creature's flesh does not incline toward good, just as the mind of one holding a killing weapon does not.

Chapter 77 · படைமாட்சி · The Excellence of an Army

A conquering host, complete in all its limbs, that fears no wound, / Mid treasures of the king is chiefest found. G.U. Pope, 1886

An army complete in its limbs, unafraid of being wounded in battle, and able to conquer is foremost among all a king's wealth.

Kural 253 works by comparison, and the comparison is what carries the weight. The mind of one who bears a killing weapon does not turn toward good; the mind of one who has eaten another creature's flesh is like it. Parimelazhagar makes the weapon-bearer's failing exact: கொலைக் கருவியைத் தம் கையில் கொண்டவர் மனம் அதனால் செய்யும் கொலையையே நோக்குவது அல்லது, அருளை நோக்காதவாறு போல — the mind of one who has taken a killing instrument into his hand looks at nothing but the killing it will do, and does not look at grace. The verse only works if the armed hand is already the settled emblem of a heart closed to mercy.

The next verse leaves no middle ground for it to occupy. Asked what grace is, 254 answers non-killing; asked what is not grace, it answers killing. Parimelazhagar repeats the definition without softening it — அருள் யாது எனின் கொல்லாமை — and concludes that eating the flesh which killing produced is sin. There is no third category into which a weapon carried for good reasons could be placed.

Five hundred verses later the same figure is ranked first. Kural 761 praises an army complete in its four arms that stands unafraid of being wounded in battle and defeats the enemy, and Parimelazhagar states the ranking flatly: அரசன் செல்வங்கள் எல்லாவற்றுள்ளும் தலையாய செல்வம், the head of all the king's wealth. This is not a necessary evil admitted with regret, and not something merely tolerated. It is placed above every other possession a ruler has, and the quality named for praise is the settled readiness of men under arms — precisely the disposition 253 uses as its image of a mind that cannot see grace.

Parimelazhagar glosses each verse where it stands and never brings the two into contact. In one place the hand that holds the weapon cannot look at grace; in the other, the men who hold weapons are the first of a king's wealth. The familiar division of labour — Book 1 for the soul, Book 2 for the office — helps less here than it does elsewhere, because 253 does not judge an act that an office might license. It judges a state of mind. And that state of mind is what 761 praises.
