The Pleasures of Temporary Estrangement

About this chapter

On the sweetness of falling out and making up, and on why the whole of love is not agreement.

This chapter closes the book on the proposition that the falling out belongs to the loving, and it spends ten verses working out where inside the falling out the pleasure actually sits.

1321 makes the sulk something given rather than something taken. There is no fault in him, she says, and she sulks all the same — because sulking is the way his tenderness reaches her. Parimelazhagar keeps the two bound together, holding the way he bestows tenderness and her sulking with him as one movement, and nothing in his gloss makes the quarrel a punishment. 1322 narrows the focus and then weighs what it finds. The small hurt that rises out of a sulk gives the good tenderness its standing; even if that tenderness droops, it gains in consequence. The word is பாடு, weight or rank, and it raises the value rather than reviving the plant — which is where Pope's "makes it bloom again" quietly goes somewhere else. 1323 asks the chapter's largest question in its shortest terms. Among people joined as water is joined with land, is there any heaven above sulking? No answer is offered because the answer is no, and the comparison is not one couple against another but a couple against a world.

1324 finds the embrace inside the quarrel. In the sulk that holds him and does not let go, she says, is the weapon that breaks the very resolve I had set on sulking. One couplet holds an embrace, a refusal and a siege at once, and the thing that defeats her is hers. 1325 moves the pleasure out into the distance. Even men who are at no fault find something at the very boundary where they are kept from the soft shoulders of the woman they want. Parimelazhagar has them sulked at as though they had erred, and puts the pleasure precisely in the not-reaching rather than in the wanting. 1326 does the ranking, and does it with food. Digesting what was eaten is sweeter than eating more; in love, sulking is sweeter than joining. Tamil has no comparative degree; the ranking is done by the fifth-case ending alone, on உணலினும் and புணர்தலின், which lifts one above the other and offers no way to call them equal. Parimelazhagar ties this sulk to a real earlier lapse, முன்னைத் தவறு, which is worth holding on to, because Pope renders the sulk throughout this chapter as anger feigned and the Tamil never says it.

1327 exchanges the places of losing and winning. The one who lost the sulk is the one who won; that is not apparent at the time, and it is seen afterwards, in the coming together. The winning happens in one moment and the seeing in another, and the couplet keeps the two apart. In 1328 the man is speaking, and what he asks for is a savour he has already had: the sweetness that arose in an embrace that brought sweat to her forehead — will we come by it again, with her sulking once more? கொல்லோ is a doubt and not an expectation, and he does not ask her to pretend.

1329 asks for time. Let the woman of bright jewels sulk again, he says, and let this night stretch on without breaking. Parimelazhagar makes the request plain: time enough for her to stand in her sulk, and time enough for him to plead and bring her round. Aiyar's English has him enjoying her frowning; the verse says nothing of the kind, and what he wants the long night for is the pleading. 1330 finishes in two steps. Sulking is the pleasure of love; and the pleasure of that sulk is the embrace, if the sulk is left at the right measure and the two come together. The book ends not on the quarrel but on the clasp that ends it.

By the small distress that rises out of a lovers' sulk, the good tenderness they show us gains a greatness of its own — even if that tenderness has withered.AI draft

Within that sulk — she has him in her arms, and the sulk itself is why he does not leave — there lies a weapon — and the thing it breaks is the resolve I had set on sulking.AI draft

Kural 1326✦ Narrative

Kural 1328✦ Narrative

Kural 1329✦ Narrative

Kural 1330✦ Narrative
