Chapter 116 / 133 · Kurals 1151–1160

Unendurable Separation

About this chapter

On parting that cannot be borne, and on the difference between distance and absence.

A chapter about the moment a parting is put into words, and about the days on either side of that moment.

Kural 1151 opens with the woman refusing the ordinary comfort. If there is such a thing as your not going, she says, tell me that; a promise of a quick return belongs to whoever will still be alive when it falls due. In 1152 the dread has already moved backwards into the present. His looking at her was once sweetness itself, and now the whole of being together carries a dimming, because the fear of the parting sits inside it.

The chapter then asks what can be known about a person and what cannot. Kural 1153 finds that assurance is hard to reach even in a man who knows both his own word and her inability to bear a separation, because a parting still happens on one occasion or another. Kural 1154 answers the question that follows from it. If the man who said "do not fear" is the one who leaves, no fault attaches to the person who took him at his word.

In 1155 she turns to her companion and asks for the only help that would meet the case: if you would keep my life safe, hold back the going of the man who holds it. Guarding the life and preventing the departure are named with one verb, and if he goes there will be no meeting again. Kural 1156 reads his manner as evidence. A man hard enough of eye to announce the parting to her face will not soften afterwards, so the hungry hope that he will has to be given up.

Kural 1157 is the chapter's sharpest picture. The bangles slipping past the joint of her forearm have already announced the abandonment without his saying a word, and she asks whether the news really has to be carried to her by somebody else. In 1158 the chapter measures two hardships against each other: living in a town where there is nobody of your own kind is painful, and being parted from the one who is sweet to you is worse than that. Kural 1159 states the mechanism, setting love beside fire. Fire burns only what touches it and has no power at all to burn from a distance.

The last verse closes on irony. Consenting to it, putting the pain away, bearing the separation, and going on living afterwards: there are many who do all of that. Many.

Kural 1151✦ Narrative

If there is such a thing as your not going, tell that to me. If what you have to say is that you will return quickly, say it to whoever will still be alive to hear it.AI draft

There was a time when his simply looking at me held sweetness in it. Now the holding itself has a dimness in it, because inside it sits the fear that he will leave.AI draft

Kural 1153✦ Narrative

Being sure of someone is hard — even of a man who knows what he promised and knows what a parting does to me, because a parting still happens on one occasion or another.AI draft

He was tender with me, and he said: do not be afraid. If that same man then leaves, is any fault owed by the one who took the words he settled her with as true?AI draft

Kural 1155✦ Narrative

If you would keep my life safe, then hold back the going of the man who holds it. If nobody holds him and he leaves, there will be no meeting again.AI draft

Kural 1156✦ Narrative

If he can stand in front of me and speak the parting aloud, he has the hard eye for it — and the hungry hope that he will one day be tender is a hope I must let go.AI draft

Kural 1157✦ Narrative

Kural 1158✦ Narrative

It is a hard thing to live in a town where there is nobody of your own kind. Harder still than that is being parted from the one who is sweet to you.AI draft

Kural 1159✦ Narrative

Fire burns you if you touch it, and that is the whole of what it can do. Can it burn, the way the sickness of love burns, from far away? It cannot.AI draft

Kural 1160✦ Narrative

To agree to the hard thing, to put away the pain it brings, to bear the parting, and to go on living afterwards — there are many who do all of that. Many.AI draft
