The second chapter of the Kural — on the greatness of rain. Valluvar places rain right after the praise of God, because rain sustains the whole world: it is food and the maker of food, and even virtue, wealth and right conduct depend on it.
Valluvar has just praised the divine. The second thing he praises is the weather. That ordering is itself the argument, and it is worth pausing on before you read a line.
The ten verses do one thing over and over: they take something you assume is independent of rain and show you that it is not. Food, obviously — but also the water you drink, which is itself food (12). The sea, which would lose its own fullness if the clouds stopped lifting water out of it and giving it back (17). Festivals and worship, which simply stop when the sky does (18). And then the two that ought to be safe from weather: giving, and self-discipline. Neither survives a drought (19). Verse 15 is the strangest and the best — rain is what ruins people, and rain falling again in time is what lifts the ruined back up. The same thing, doing both.
Nothing here is scenery. A book about how to live opens by saying plainly that the conditions for living are not in your hands, and it says so before it asks you for anything at all.
