Chapter 21 / 133 · Kurals 201–210

Dread of Evil Deeds

About this chapter

On fearing to do wrong itself. Evil deeds breed fresh suffering, follow the doer like his own shadow, and are the one enemy none can escape — so the worthy dread wrongdoing more than fire, do no harm even to those who hate them, and keep to the straight path.

The image at the centre of this chapter is one you will not forget. The ruin that follows a harmful deed is like your own shadow: it does not leave, it comes with you, and it settles at your feet (208). Verse 207 puts it as a comparison instead — you can escape an enemy however great, but the enmity your own deed created follows and strikes.

The reason it is placed here, among the virtues of conduct, is verse 201: the hardened do not fear wrongdoing, and people of worth fear precisely that loss of moral alarm. The thing to be afraid of is not punishment. It is the day you stop flinching.

Two verses are unusually practical. 205 removes the commonest justification there is — do not do harm saying I have nothing, because that is how you become one who has nothing again. And 206 states the rule in a form you can apply without any metaphysics at all: if you do not want harm following and afflicting you, do not do that class of thing to others. Verse 203, meanwhile, sets the bar high and calls it the highest wisdom: refraining from harm even toward those who are hostile to you.

Kural 201✦ Narrative

Those accustomed to wrongdoing feel no dread of evil deeds; but the noble and virtuous dread that reckless arrogance as a mortal danger.AI draft

Kural 202✦ Narrative

Because evil deeds inevitably produce suffering for the doer, one must fear doing evil even more than physical fire. Fire burns only what it touches; evil deeds destroy one's soul and posterity.AI draft

Kural 204✦ Narrative

Never plot harm against another even in a moment of forgetfulness; if one does, virtue itself will design the ruin of the plotter.AI draft

Kural 205✦ Narrative

Never plead poverty as an excuse to commit wrongful deeds; doing so only deepens one's destitution and leads to lasting ruin.AI draft

One who does not wish suffering to pursue and torment oneself must never inflict harmful deeds upon others.AI draft

One may somehow escape the fiercest external enemy; but the hostility created by one's own evil deeds never leaves, tracking down and destroying the wrongdoer.AI draft

Kural 208✦ Narrative

The ruin of those who commit evil resembles a person's shadow: it never departs, but clings to their very steps wherever they go.AI draft

Kural 209✦ Narrative
