Not Envying
The seventeenth chapter, அழுக்காறாமை — 'not envying,' freedom from the grudging that cannot bear another's good. Placed after forbearance, Valluvar makes a clear-eyed case against envy on grounds of plain self-interest. A heart free of envy toward everyone, he says, is the finest thing a person can attain — make it a rule of life. To begrudge a neighbour's prosperity is, in effect, to want neither virtue nor wealth for yourself; the wise refuse it because they see the harm it does them. Envy needs no help to ruin the envious — it is enemy enough on its own; it starves even the begrudger's family, drives away fortune itself, and, that matchless sinner, wrecks wealth here and peace hereafter. The riddle of an envious person prospering while a generous one suffers is only apparent: no one ever rose by envy, and no open-handed heart ever fell for lack of it.
Most writing about envy tells you it is unkind. This chapter takes a different line: it tells you it is inefficient. Verse 165 puts it in one stroke — for the envious, envy alone is enough to ruin them; they need no enemy at all. The damage arrives from inside, and no one else has to do anything.
Verse 163 explains the mechanism and is the sharpest thing here. Somebody who cannot wish another's prosperity well is described as a person who wants neither virtue nor wealth for himself — because the same reflex that refuses to be glad at another's gain is the one that will refuse the work that produces your own. Verse 167 says the same thing as a small piece of theatre: Fortune cannot bear the envious, hands them over to her elder sister Misfortune, and leaves.
And 170 states the claim plainly enough to test against your own life: nobody ever grew great by envy, and no generous heart ever fell from greatness. Note what the chapter never asks. It does not ask you to stop wanting things. It asks you to stop needing somebody else to have less.
