On judging one's own capacity, the task, allies, and opposition before acting, without confusing strength with human worth.

Verse 471 lists four measurements and most people take only two. The strength of the task, your own strength, the opponent's strength, and your allies' strength. The third and fourth are where plans usually fail, and the verse puts them on the same line as the first two.

Verse 475 is the image the chapter is famous for, and it is about the axle, not the load. A cart piled with peacock feathers will still break if the light load goes past what the cart can take. Weight is not the point; the limit is. Verse 473 says what happens without that check — many have surged forward on excitement, not knowing their own measure, and broken down halfway.
