Almost everything written about reputation is about managing it. This chapter is not, and that is the reason to read it. Valluvar never once tells you to seek praise. He tells you what praise is a by-product of, and then asks a question that is much harder to get away from: if nothing you did is worth repeating after you, what exactly was produced?
The ten verses build one argument. Renown follows giving — specifically, giving to somebody who asked and had nothing (231, 232). Of everything on earth, it is the only thing that does not perish (233). Then the chapter turns and becomes uncomfortable. If you have not lived in a way that earns praise, do not resent the people who think little of you, because you have not looked at yourself (237). And it closes on a hard image: those who live without reproach are the ones who are alive, and those who live without renown are not (240).
